Description

The City of Auburn is looking for a Senior Building Inspector to join our team!

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Auburn’s Building Division is a team of four that provides permitting, planning and inspection services. This position is a core member of the team, guiding and coordinating inspection services. Their expertise and leadership play a crucial role in maintaining high standards to ensure compliance and safety for building occupancy.

Under direction, the Senior Building Inspector performs the full range of building inspection duties involved in the inspection of routine and complex structural building systems at various stages of construction, alteration, and repair for compliance with approved plans and codes; conducts plumbing, electrical, and mechanical inspections; assists in the review of building plans and specifications; and investigates violations and complaints, conducts enforcement actions, and secures compliance with codes.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Actual work may vary based on department needs or change due to evolving business practices.

  • Perform field building inspections of complex industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure that structures are being constructed in accordance with approved plans and specifications; inspect all aspects of building construction, including plumbing, electrical, structural, and mechanical installations, for compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations and to ensure the proper and safe installations of building systems; note defects in construction work and issue correction notices.
  • Inspect foundation, cement, framing, plastering, and a large variety of routine and/or complex structural building systems and elements including checking stud, joist, rafter spacing, and other structural member factors; examining grade, quality, and treatment of lumber; and examining cement, lath, wire, and composition.
  • Confer with, coordinate with, and provide information and assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and the general public in the field and office; explain and interpret applicable codes, ordinances, and zoning regulations, requirements, and restrictions.
  • Assist at the public counter; review plans and specifications; issue permits and collect fees.
  • Make field review of plans and specifications.
  • Coordinate inspection activities with other City departments.
  • Investigate violations and complaints and conduct enforcement actions; prepare letters for non-compliance and expired permits.
  • Assist in the conduct of zoning and general land use and code enforcement inspection work as assigned.
  • Maintain a variety of files and records related to areas of assignment; input and retrieve information into computer data bases; prepare reports, correspondence, and a variety of other written materials as requested.
  • Assist the Building Official in the design and bidding of public projects, budget review, scheduling extra help, and other special projects and administrative assignments as assigned.
  • Serve as acting Building Official as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Work is performed in a standard office setting with travel to various locations to attend meetings and to perform inspections, the employee often works in and around building and construction sites and in outside weather conditions. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting and in a field environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; verbally communicate to exchange information. Must see in the normal visual range with or without correction, sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents. Must hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates will be evaluated for qualifications. Those who demonstrate the strongest qualifications will be invited to interview. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview. The selection process may also include written exams and skills assessments. The final candidate will undergo a background check, live scan and pre-employment medical exam.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and progressive steps used in the construction of buildings and related structures, pertinent uniform building related codes, ordinances, and regulations enforced by the City including the Uniform Building Code, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical codes, zoning ordinances, general land use codes, and related City codes, principles and techniques used in building inspection work including those used to examine the quality of work and materials and to detect deviations from plans, regulations, and standard construction practices, accepted building construction safety standards, permit processing procedures, modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, principles and procedures of record keeping.

Ability to: Understand, interpret, explain, and enforce provisions of applicable building, safety, and zoning codes and ordinance requirements to contractors, developers, and the general public, perform the full range of building inspections including the more complex commercial and industrial related inspections, examine workmanship and material and detect deviation from plans, regulations, and standard construction methods and requirements, determine that construction systems conform to City code requirements, advise on standard construction methods and requirements, analyze, interpret and accurately check building plans and specifications, respond to requests and inquiries from the general public, read and interpret plans, diagrams, specifications, and notes, maintain complete and accurate records, write routine reports and correspondence, make arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately, enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact, communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:

A combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities is to possess:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level and specialized training in building inspection, building technology, architecture, engineering, or a related field.
  • Five years of experience in a building trade and four years of experience as a Building Inspector.

License or Certificate:

  • Possession of ICC certifications as a Building, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, or Combination Building Inspector.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid driver’s license.

  • Annual salary range of $75,691 - $96,616
  • 5% longevity pay at 10 years of service and 10% at 15 years
