The City of Lincoln is recruiting to fill one vacancy for the position of Civil Engineer within the Community Development Department.  We are accepting applications until the position is filled. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply immediately. The salary ranges for each classification are as follows:

  • Assistant Engineer:  $ 56,438 to $ 75,693
  • Associate Engineer:  $ 72,088 to $ 96,605
  • Senior Civil Engineer:  $ 84,379 to $ 113,077

We are looking for a driven, collaborative and creative Engineer to help move our active development projects forward.  The vacancy may be filled by one of the following job classes: Assistant Engineer, Associate Engineer or Senior Civil Engineer; dependent upon candidate qualifications.


Assistant Engineer
The Assistant Engineer is entry-level in the professional engineering class series. This technical class includes performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this class.  Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same level of independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the Associate Engineer.  Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks.  Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees have only limited or no directly related professional engineering work experience.


Associate Engineer
The Associate Engineer is a journey-level professional engineering class expected to perform the full range of professional engineering duties. Positions in the Associate Engineer class may exercise direct supervision over technical engineering staff.


Senior Engineer
The Senior Engineer is the full supervisory level in the professional engineering class series.  Incumbents are responsible for directing and supervising the work of a unit of professional and technical engineering staff in the Engineering Division. In addition, they perform the most complex professional engineering work. This class is distinguished from Associate Engineer by the performance of full supervisory responsibilities.

Ideal Candidate

Placement in the job class and range will depend on qualifications and experience. Candidates must have any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary.  A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field, a valid Class C California driver’s license, and:


Assistant Engineer
The equivalent of three (3) years of increasingly responsible civil engineering experience and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate. Candidates possessing a valid California Professional Engineer License may be considered for the Associate or Senior level.


Associate Engineer
The equivalent of three (3) years of increasingly responsible civil engineering experience. Candidates must possess a valid California Professional Engineer License within one (1) year of hire date.


Senior Civil Engineer
The equivalent of five (5) years of increasingly responsible civil engineering experience that includes at least one (1) year of lead or supervisory responsibility and possession of a valid California Professional Engineer License.


The Selection Process

The process may include an in-basket exercise, individual interviews, panel interviews and/or other related components.  Only those candidates who have the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirements and duties of the position will continue in the selection process. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to the process. The candidate selected for the position will be required to complete a background check including reference checks, fingerprint check, medical/drug-test evaluation and/or other related components.
