Under general direction, provides management and support for all City information systems including: Data Center production and test operations; Police Department systems and applications; network infrastructure; and system administration for City-wide applications; and performs related work as required.


  • Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Manages and supports Data Center operations involving all NT and web servers, databases, workstations, printers and related equipment;
  • Manages and supports all Police Department systems and applications, including CAD, automated records management, mobile data terminals and associated systems and equipment;
  • Performs all technical functions related to the network infrastructure such as design, security and installation;
  • Provides system administrator support in connection with City-wide applications;
  • Trains and gives technical assistance to other information technology staff and to users;
  • Provides recommendations to the Information Technology Manager regarding system needs and improvements;
  • Attends meetings and training sessions; - Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge of:
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; office management techniques, planning and organization; Windows Server (NT – 2016), MacOS, Linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, CentOS), Database (MS SQL / SSRS, MySQL, etc.); network switch management (of major brands such as: Cisco, Meraki, HP, Dell, Juniper, D-Link, Netgear, etc.); Next-Generation Firewalls (of major brands such as, CheckPoint, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Barracuda, SonicWall, Cisco, etc.), Wireshark or other network tools, Layer-2, layer-3 networking; scripting tools; virtualization platforms – Hyper-V or VMWare or Nutanix AHV; Active Directory and Internet Explorer; SQL and Informix database management; other applicable systems; network based services including email, printing, backups, anti-virus and security; network administration; all aspects of personal computers; maintenance and repair of electronic and communications systems; and current information technology products and developments.

Skill in and ability to:

  • Understand the organization and operation of the city and of outside agencies; - Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; - Effectively maintain the City’s network infrastructure (WAN, LAN, VLAN, Wireless network, MPLS, VPN, VoIP, QoS) and other critical systems including those used by the Police Department including by not limited to, CAD (Computer-aided dispatch), RMS (Record Management System) and 911 Phone systems;
  • Acquire a thorough knowledge of all City-wide and Police Department;
  • Understand and respond to departmental needs and application requirements;
  • Assists in the analysis and evaluation of vendors and products in accordance with City requirements and specifications;
  • Serves as a subject-matter expert in the vendor evaluation process; - Provide excellent internal and external customer service;
  • Identify, analyze, develop plans and implement approved changes to systems;
  • Understand and respond to departmental needs and application requirements;
  • Assess personal computer and network administration problems and take appropriate action.

Experience and Education Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in computer science, information systems or closely related field.


  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in professional information technology services which has included responsibilities in more than one of the responsibility areas outlined above.


  • Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver’s license.

On a continuous basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist while working on computer equipment, peripherals, and other ancillary equipment; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful completion of assigned duties; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.

Employee works indoors, in direct contact with other City personnel, with or without close supervision, and firm deadlines.

The salary range for this position ranges from $105,370 up to $128,078 annually. Placement within the range will be DOE.
This position is represented by the Los Altos Municipal Employees Association.

The benefits package offered by the City includes:

  • Retirement: CalPERS retirement plan for Classic members is 2% @ 60 with employee paying a contribution of 7%. PEPRA employees participate on a 2.0% @ 62 plan, with employee paying 6.25% of the retirement contribution. Benefits based on highest three years of compensation. The City does not participate in Social Security.
  • Health Plans: Choice of HMO or PPO plans through CalPERS Health with most family plans covered at 100%. Employees who waive coverage may receive stipend of $350 per month.
  • Dental/Vision: City also offers a dental and vision reimbursement plan
  • Flexible Spending Plan: Dependent care and health care reimbursement plan available
  • Deferred Compensation: Voluntary participation in either Nationwide or ICMA-RC

  • The City follows a Defined 9/80 Schedule with offices closed every other Friday
