Description

The City of Auburn is seeking a dedicated and proactive law enforcement professional to serve as the Chief of Police.

This position will lead our dedicated department and be instrumental in guiding our department through today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. The City has 85 full-time employees serving 14,000 residents. The APD is a team of 24 sworn officers and 11 professional staff providing patrol, investigations, 911 dispatch and other law enforcement services. The department has an annual operating budget of roughly $6 million.

The anticipated salary is up to $205,000, DOQ. The City offers a competitive benefits package, see the benefits section for details.

 

What You Will Do

The Chief of Police is responsible for the planning, administration and operation of the APD under general administrative direction. Upon hire, the incumbent can expect to work closely with the City Manager, City Council, Placer County and community leaders to further learn, understand and address community public safety issues.

APD utilizes the Community-Oriented Policing philosophy and the Problem-Oriented Policing strategy to better serve the community. This includes serving with the Community Advisory Council and Community Action Team to connect with those who live, work and play in Auburn. The APD team works closely with the Placer County Probation and Health and Human Services departments, along with other groups within our community, to address those in the community experiencing homelessness.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be committed to our community and organization, a seasoned veteran who can think creatively and strategically to address our evolving needs.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration or related; 10 years of responsible law enforcement experience with 5 years of management and administrative responsibility, and a POST Management certificate. A master’s degree, completion of the FBI Academy or POST Command College are desired.

The anticipated salary is up to $205,000, DOQ. The City of Auburn offers a competitive benefits package including:

  • CalPERS retirement: Classic formula is 2% at 50 and PEPRA is 2.7% at 57, employee pays their portion plus 3% of the employer portion
