Description

Applications are being accepted for the position of Police Officer ~ Lateral Transfer with the City of South San Francisco.

Requirements in addition to a completed online application:

Lateral Transfer: Completion of POST approved basic academy and actively employed by a California Law Enforcement Agency as a Peace Officer within the last twelve months; successful completion of probation and possession of POST Basic Certificate required. (Copy of California POST Basic Academy Certificate and POST Basic Certificate must be submitted with application).

Education: Graduation from a U.S. High School or the equivalent with additional education at the community college level preferred.

Qualifications: Minimum 21 years of age at time of examination and must meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance, and agility.

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Ability to obtain an appropriate California Driver’s license, which must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • POST Basic Academy Certificate
  • POST Basic Certificate

Selection Process:

The Examination Process will consist of the following independent parts: 

1. Examination process will first consist of a review of application materials including the responses to supplemental questionnaire and POST certifications.

2. The most suitable and qualified candidates will receive Personal History Statement (PHS) via e-mail to complete and return. 

3. Based on a review of the Personal History Statement, candidate may be scheduled for an oral panel interview

4. Upon successful completion of the oral interview examination, an eligible employment list will be established which will be used for the appointment to the position.

Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process and placement on the eligible employment list. Appeals concerning administration of an examination must be submitted in writing within 2-business days from the date the event occurred.

Before a conditional employment offer is made, a thorough background check will be done, including a polygraph and fingerprint check.  If successful, candidates are then required to successfully pass a psychological, medical examination, a drug screen, and must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work in the United States. Candidates may be disqualified at any point in this process.


State and Federal Law require that all police officers be free from felony or domestic violence convictions. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or resident aliens that are eligible and have applied for U.S. Citizenship.

Benefits

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary:  $6,928 - $9,082 / Monthly

Retirement:  In compliance to AB 340, CalPERS retirement formula is either 3% at age 55; employee pays approximately 10%, OR 2.7% at age 57; employee pays approximately 11.5% of pay, depending on the individual's eligibility. City contributes an equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after retirement account.

Health Insurance:  City offers choice among two HMO and two PPO plans, and offers vision and dental benefits.  City pays 100% of vision and dental core plan premiums for employee and dependents.  Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO health premium cost based on the category of coverage (single, two, family).  For PPO, employee pays additional cost difference between PPO and HMO plans.  City offers flexible spending plans (medical and dependent care), supplemental life insurance and a discretionary benefit option for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.

Premium Pay:  City offers various education, bilingual pay, and special assignment pay incentives.

Retirement Health Savings (RHS) Plan: Employee shall contribute 1% of base pay each pay period.

Vacation:  Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, depending on length of service.

Holidays: Fourteen paid holidays, per year, including one floating holiday.

Programs:  Long Term Care, Unreimbursed Health and Dependent Care Plans, Employee Assistance Program, Credit Union, Recreation Classes, Reduced-fee Child-Care Programs and Deferred Compensation Plans are available.
