Description

Applications are being accepted for the position of Engineering Intern (temporary) with the City of South San Francisco’s Public Works Department - Engineering Division. This is a non-benefited, part-time hourly/temporary position.

Hourly Rate:  $23.00 per hour; interns will be expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week for a period of 12 months, the hours are flexible.

Ideal Candidate

THE POSITION
Under supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office work to assist the Public Works Engineering Division teams on programs and projects that may include engineering permits, land development plan checks, procedural and standards research and development, record and asset management, traffic research and field crew assistance.

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

  • Performs a wide variety of responsible sub-professional engineering work including assisting engineering staff with general clerical, administrative, and technical tasks for public works projects
  • Performs electronic document filing, enters data and creates reports in various software applications
  • Conducts internet research and research of engineering record archives
  • Processes permits and reviews land development plans
  • Assists with Traffic Advisory Committee tasks
  • Assists with internal and external communications and public outreach      

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  Basic engineering principles; drafting symbols used in construction work; basic engineering office equipment; modern personal computers and related computer software; principles and practical application of computer-aided drafting such as AutoCad, design and mapping systems.

Ability to:  Communicate well, both orally and in writing, detailed-oriented, highly organized, adaptable, and energetic, and work both cooperatively and complete assignments independently; learn basic construction inspection procedures; accurately make and verify mathematical computations; perform neat and accurate drafting; collect engineering field data, and make field notes; maintain accurate records; effectively use modern office software; prepare Powerpoint presentations; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; prepare response letters to the public; work flexible hours; and perform customer service with the public and general contractors.

Experience:  None required.

Education:  Current student enrolled in a university/college pursuing an undergraduate degree (Junior or Senior) or graduate degree in Engineering, preferably in Civil Engineering. 

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License is preferable.
