The County of Yuba is recruiting to fill and establish an employment list for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher within the Sheriff’s Department.  The incumbent receives 9-1-1 system sheriff, fire, medical emergency and rescue calls; dispatches sheriff, fire and medical personnel following established procedures; maintains communication with officers in the field to ensure safety and provide back-up and information; provides relief coverage for the records unit; and performs related work as assigned. These classifications require shift work and the ability to make decisions and act appropriately in stressful situations. The work also involves interdepartmental cooperation with various public safety agencies located throughout the County to coordinate the most effective response to requests for assistance from the public.


About the Sheriff's Department:

The Yuba County Sheriff's Office is comprised of multiple functions within the Operations Division including Valley and Foothill Patrol, Investigations, Narcotics Task Force, Gang Enforcement, Marijuana Eradication Team, Coroner, Crime Prevention, Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT, Canine Program, Field Training Officer, Aero Squadron, and Marine Enforcement.  The department is committed to working in partnership with the community to identify and resolve public safety and quality of life issues, consistent with it’s core values.  The Sheriff's Office provides a full range of services to an estimated population of about 70,000.  The Sheriff’s Department is located in the City of Marysville with a substation  in Brownsville.




Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate must maintain flexibility for shift work and mandated overtime as compulsory to the departments needs. The incumbent must be self motivated, accountable and possess the ability to learn and adapt in a fast pace, multi-tasking environment.

Required Qualifications:


*Must indicate results from a 5 min. test, testing agency and no more than 12 mo. old (internet and/or online tests NOT acceptable).

Minimum: Equivalent to graduation from high school, one (1) year of office support or customer contact experience.

Lateral: In addition to the Public Safety Dispatcher minimum, possess a P.O.S.T. Certified 120-hour Basic Dispatcher Course and at least one year of current, full-time, paid public safety dispatcher experience with a recognized law enforcement agency, which included successful completion of a Dispatcher Training Program and a probationary period.

Preferred: In addition to the minimum, 30 semester units from an accredited college or university with major course work in administrative justice, criminal justice, business administration or a field related to the work and experience working as a dispatcher for a law enforcement agency; type up to 60 wpm; and/or possess a valid current P.O.S.T. certified 120-hour Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course certificate.

Working Conditions: Work evenings, nights, weekends, holiday extended hours, and rotating shifts. Work in situations which involve emergencies and may be a stressful; radio dispatch setting; fast paced and multi-tasking environment. During extreme emergency events or a shutdown of the Communications Center incumbents may be required to work from a Mobile Command Post Vehicle.




Hiring Range: $4,057 to $4,463 Monthly

Lateral Hiring Range: $4,666 to $5,275 Monthly

Lateral Hiring Incentives*

*Lateral Hiring Incentives Eligibility: Must be currently employed with a another recognized law enforcement agency.

MERIT INCREASE: Typically 5% each year for the first 7 years

RETIREMENT: Miscellaneous Classifications

Classic: 2% @55

New: 2% @ 62 (1/1/13 CalPERS pension Reform)

VACATION: 12 days for first 5 yrs with incremental increases every 5 yrs thereafter, up to 20 yrs

HOLIDAYS: An average of 13 paid holidays per year (this includes 2 floating holidays)

SICK LEAVE: Accrued every payroll period, up to 12 days per yr

HEALTH: The County pays 90% of the Basic Plan Premium for employee only or 70% for employee and eligible dependent(s)

DENTAL/VISION: The County pays 100% of the Basic Plan premium for employee only or 80% for employee and eligible dependent(s)

LIFE: County provides $50,000 in life insurance coverage

DEFERRED COMP: Voluntary Deferred Compensation plan(s) are available

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: County paid confidential counseling program for up to 5 visits per incident per eligible family member.

Must submit a valid typing certificate at the time of application (before the final filing date) indicating a speed of at least 45 net words per minute (wpm). The certificate must be a five minute test (internet and/or online test NOT acceptable). Must be no more than twelve months old. Applicants who have successfully complete the application screening and meet the minimum qualifications for this position must successfully complete the Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Entry-Level Dispatcher Exam.  Please note, candidates must wait at least one month before re-taking this exam for any agency.  An exam T-score of 48.0 or higher must be achieved. An employment eligibility list is established for those applicants who successfully pass all phases of the examination process. This list will be held for a minimum of six (6) months from the date the list is certified. For each vacancy the top five (5) ranks on the list will be certified to the department for final selection, which will include a departmental interview.

The applicant may also be asked questions about hypothetical situations to test his/her ability to make decisions and use sound judgment and common sense.
