The City of Auburn is looking for a Transportation Supervisor to join our team!

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Transportation Supervisor is an important part of the City's transit team that provide services including the Auburn Loop fixed route and Auburn OnDemand ride share programs.

Under direction of the Public Works Director, Transit Manager or designee, the incumbent coordinates, supervises, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of staff responsible for Auburn Transit's daily operations; schedule drivers to ensure routes are completed in a safe and timely manner; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures including providing necessary training and ensuring re-certification of drivers as required; and operates a bus as necessary to cover shifts.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for Auburn Transit daily operations; perform regular road supervision, vehicle trial checks, and daily vehicle inspection monitoring.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing Auburn Transit services; schedule drivers to ensure routes are completed in a safe and timely manner; coordinate any changes to facilitate coverage for all shifts.
  • Coordinates transportation needs for local schools and special events; prepares calendar of trips or special events to be incorporated into the bus timetable; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Provide an increasing level of customer service and satisfaction by providing service that is flexible, dependable, and consistent.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the selection of Bus Drivers; provide or coordinate staff training; issue manuals, bulletins and technical guides to improve services and operational activities; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
  • Coordinate training for driver certification and maintenance of certification; document all training in the driver training records; act as a liaison with CHP and DMV regarding certification and training record documentation.
  • Provide staff assistance to the Transit Manager; participate on a variety of committees; prepare and present reports of operations and activities and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary.
  • Coordinate maintenance for buses and allocate buses to be used on routes.
  • Respond to the scene of transit vehicle accidents and passenger incidents; provide on the scene assistance to drivers and passengers.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents; make prompt and accurate reports; review investigation with transit drivers and determine accident preventability and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Act as Safety Liaison with various agencies including police and emergency authorities as necessary.
  • Provide regular informational and safety meetings.
  • Perform a full range of customer relations; answer questions from the public relating to bus routes and schedule of pick-ups and drop-offs; issue bus passes.
  • Work with local businesses to promote the use of Auburn Transit and fulfill the optimal service hours of the route.
  • Operate a bus as necessary to cover shifts.
  • Perform related duties as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of: Operational characteristics, services, and activities of a public transit program; principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation; operational characteristics, maintenance, and emergency repair principles related to assigned vehicles; vehicle inspection principles and practices; geography of the City; pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations including traffic and safety laws, ordinances, regulations, and rules applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of passengers; certifications required for the operation of a bus carrying passengers; occupational hazards and standard safety practices; methods and techniques of public relations and customer service; principles and procedures of record keeping; safe and defense driving principles and practices; basic first aid principles and practices.

Ability to: Supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of lower level staff; select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff; prepare clear and concise reports; drive a bus and other automotive equipment safely and efficiently in traffic; maintain order among passengers on a bus; properly load, tie down, and secure wheelchairs on the bus; interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations as well as administrative and departmental policies and procedures; work safely and adhere to principles of safety; respond tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately to inquiries from the public, press, or other agencies on sensitive issues in area of responsibility; compile data, maintain records and files, and participate in the preparation of clear and concise reports; independently prepare routine correspondence and memoranda; operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting and to operate a passenger bus for extended periods of time; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate amounts of weight; twist; climb steps; operate office equipment and assigned vehicles.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Ideal Candidate

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training related to the operation of passenger vehicles.
  • Five years of driving experience involving the carrying of passengers that includes some lead supervisory or administrative experience.
  • Additional specialized training in staff supervision, business administration, or a related field is desirable.

License or Certificate:

Possession of the following licenses and certifications are required:

  • A current California Class A or B driver’s license with a Passenger Endorsement and current DOT medical certification.
  • Either a General Public Paratransit Vehicle, School Pupils Activity Bus or School Bus Certificate.
  • Valid Instructors Certificate issued from the Department of Transportation or the Department of Education.
