Two (2) positions in the Streets Division and one (1) that will be a rotational role between different divisions. Applicants must obtain a valid California Commercial Driver’s License with a valid medical examination certificate within three (3) months of appointment as a condition of employment. Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver’s License at the time of application highly desirable.

Must be able to be on-call (with a one-hour response time) for Sewer Standby every seven weeks in the Sewer Utility.

Performs a variety of tasks in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works infrastructure and facilities, and performs other related work as required. Incumbents may be assigned to Sewer Utility, Drainage and Water Pollution Control, Streets or Traffic and Electrical Operations. This is a broad classification with individual positions assigned to specific functional areas; duties and assignments may overlap depending on the operational needs of the department and staffing levels. Incumbents will be required to work stand-by and respond to emergency call-outs as assigned.

 

Public Works Maintenance Worker I
The Public Works Maintenance Worker I is the entry level – journey level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks. This classification is alternatively staffed with Public Works Maintenance Worker II and under the flexible staffing concept, employees assigned to the Public Works Maintenance Worker I class may reasonably expect to progress to the II level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level class.


Public Works Maintenance Worker II
This is the journey level - advanced level class in the Public Works Maintenance Worker series. Positions within this class are normally filled by advancement from the Maintenance Worker I class, or when filled from the outside, requires prior experience in the construction and maintenance of streets, wastewater, storm water, traffic operations or traffic operations electrical systems. Appointment at the Maintenance Worker II level requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class. All positions assigned to this class require the ability to work independently exercising judgment and initiative. Duties will normally require the ability to operate a full range of mechanical equipment related to the specific functional assignment.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • An understanding of the importance of customer service as well as the methods used to provide a high level of customer service.  
     
  • Two or more years in Public sector maintenance worker experience and/or experience in a similar field.
     
  • Possession of a valid California Commercial Drivers License (Class A or B) with a valid medical examiner's certificate at time of application. 
     
  • Paving and roadwork experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

While the following requirements outline the minimum qualifications, Human Resources reserves the right to select applicants for further consideration whose qualifications best match the needs of the position. 

Knowledge of:

  • Equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities including hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
  • Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations.
  • Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
  • Construction materials, paints, and a variety of other materials used in maintenance work.
  • Proper set up and use of traffic control devices. 
  • City and department policies and procedures. 
  • Safe work practices.

Skill in:

  • Operating required tools, vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Operating office equipment, including computers and supporting applications.

 Ability to:

  • Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  • Perform heavy manual tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Work safely and adhere to established safety principles and practices.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Provide courteous and efficient service to the public and City employees.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Read and interpret basic maps, blueprints and diagrams.
  • To understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Respond to emergency situations in off hours as required and maintain standby availability on a   scheduled basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying.   A typical way would be:

Education:  Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Experience:
Maintenance Worker I: One year of maintenance or construction experience is desirable.

Maintenance Worker II: Two years of increasingly responsible experience within the assigned area of responsibility.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

Licenses:
Possession of a valid California Class “B” driver’s license with appropriate endorsements and continue to meet the requirements for renewal.

Certificates:
Ability to obtain CWEA Grade I (or higher) Collection System Maintenance certification within one year from date of appointment.

Physical, Environmental Working Conditions:
Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects. Perform pushing, pulling, twisting and bending needed for rodding sewer lines.  Work outdoors in adverse weather. Work in and around raw sewage.

Public Works Maintenance Worker I - $ 5,339.63- $6,490.35 per month

Public Works Maintenance Worker II - $ 5,910.63- $7,184.41 per month

  • Retirement- The City of Belmont participates in the CalPERS Retirement Plan. Employees are enrolled at the PEPRA Member or Classic Member subject to CalPERS regulations.
  • Deferred Compensation - The City makes a monthly contribution of 1.3% of employee’s base salary plus $150/month into employee's 457 Deferred Compensation Account. In addition, employees can make pre-tax contributions via payroll deduction.
  • Paid Time Off: We understand the importance of work-life harmony. You will receive accrual of paid time off, including vacation days, sick days, and holidays.
  • Vacation - Accrual starts at 6.33 hours per month of service, equal to ten (10) days per year. Prior years of public service may be considered when granting accrual rate.
  • Sick Leave - Earned at one day (8 hours) per month of service.
  • Eleven (11) Holidays with two (2) Floating Holidays after a year of service
