Description

Central County Fire Department (CCFD) serves the Cities of Burlingame and Millbrae and the Town of Hillsborough. The Department serves a population of 66,045 from six fire stations across a service area of approximately 15 square miles. CCFD is supported by 91 FTEs and a FY2024-25 operating budget of $37 million. 
 
CCFD is recruiting for a full-time Fire Inspector to join our dynamic, well-regarded Prevention Division! Under the direction and supervision of the Fire Marshal or Deputy Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector performs responsible, technical, and specialized work in life safety inspection, fire investigation, and engineering and code enforcement. An integral member of the department, the Fire Inspector position offers a variety of exciting ways to make a direct impact in the communities we serve. From inspections, plan reviews, code compliance, fire prevention education, and investigating the cause and origin of fires, the Fire Inspector facilitates the overall safety and well-being of the public. 
 
Salary range $138,781.76 - $168,690.08; salary supplemented by highly competitive benefits. Placement within the range will be dependent on qualifications and experience.

The ideal candidate will also have: 

Knowledge of:
• Organization, procedures, and operating details of City government
• Principles and procedures of record keeping
• Microsoft Office and other software programs used in fire administration
• Department Policies and Procedures
• Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations


Ability to:
• Understand, interpret, and apply the International Fire Code, California Fire Code, California Building Code, and other applicable federal, state, and local laws
• Detect fire hazards and code violations and determine appropriate mitigation measures
• Plan and perform fieldwork
• Read construction drawings and specifications, identifying necessary changes to bring project into compliance with appropriate building and fire codes
• Assist in fact-finding investigations of fire incidents
• Effectively organize and document facts leading to criminal prosecution


Education and Experience:
• Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by courses in fire engineering, fire safety, or a closely related field
• Associate’s degree in Architecture, Criminal Justice, Engineering, or Fire Protection is highly desirable
• Successful completion of California State Board or equivalent of Fire Services accredited courses Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D, or Certification of California State Fire Marshal Fire Prevention Officer or equivalent
• Completion of California State Board or equivalent of Fire Services accredited courses Fire Protection 1C, Fire Investigation 1A and 1B, and a POST-certified California Penal Code Section 832 course or equivalent are highly desirable

 

License or Certificate:
• Valid California State Driver’s License

 

Special Requirements:
Ability to crawl, crouch, twist upper body, sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time; climb ladders and work at heights; ability to work in a hazardous environment including electrical and mechanical hazards; ability to work in confined spaces. Ability to analyze situations quickly and draw logical conclusions; to remain calm and follow instructions under pressure, stress, and emergency situations. Work cooperatively with the public, other departments, and all those encountered in the course of work. Communicate clearly on the phone, in person, and in writing; deal calmly with irate citizens and contracts; enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact. Possess the necessary visual and aural abilities as well as physical stamina and endurance required to perform aforementioned duties. There may be some chemical hazard exposure, but mechanical hazards are minor.
