Description

Under direct supervision of the Pool Supervisor, The Lifeguard has the responsibility to enforce the safety standards, rules, and regulations of the City’s Pool program; to rescue swimmers in distress and administer First Aid and CPR when it is needed; This position includes ensuring the safety of all pool patrons, be alert of all activities in and around the pool while on duty and to assist with general maintenance and cleanup activities and performs related work as required.  Work is performed in a swimming facility environment, with frequent contact with City staff and the public.  Multiple Lifeguard positions are available.

Tact and diplomacy; dependability; maturity; sufficient to assume the responsibility of protecting the lives of others; willingness to conform to prescribed uniform standards.  Unique physical characteristics include – physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear are sufficient to complete the job's essential functions.  Must be observant, friendly, helpful, enthusiastic, responsible, and work well in a team.  Must pass a general background check and fingerprinting to determine suitability for working with children.

Pre-Requisites (Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:)

 

  1. Education and Experiences: 
    1. Lifeguard I – Completion of the 10th grade (Must be at Least 16 Years Old) and possession of advanced lifesaving or water safety Instructor’s Certificate.  Valid Driver’s License. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.  American Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced).  American Red Cross or American Heart of Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate. 
    1. Lifeguard II – Graduation from high school and/or GED and experience as a lifeguard and possessing advanced lifesaving or water safety Instructor’s Certificate.  Valid Driver’s License. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.  American Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced).  American Red Cross or American Heart of Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate.   

 

Ideal Candidate

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs rescue and administers artificial respiration, CPR, and First Aid.
  2. Enforce pool rules and regulations for the safety of all pool patrons.
  3. Assists in communicating in emergency situations.
  4. Administers swim tests to swimmers of questionable ability.
  5. Maintains alertness for possible accidents in the water and throughout the facility.
  6. Participate in maintaining and preparing daily records related to rescues, assistance, first aid, attendance, and other pool activities.
  7. Advise the Pool Manager of unsafe and unsanitary conditions and knows the emergency procedures of the pool.
  8. Completes appropriate incident/accident reports when necessary.
  9. Performs daily routine chores to ensure a neat and orderly appearance.
  10. Provides Customer Service

D.  GENERAL & SPECIALIZED JOB KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  1. General Knowledge of:  Pool operations practices and procedures.  Occupational hazards and related safety precautions necessary for the protection of employees and the general public in aquatics
    1. Lifeguard Training and First Aid
    2. Responds Calmly and Effectively to Emergency Situations
  1. Specialized Skill of:  Hazards of bloodborne pathogens and chemicals associated with the operation of a pool
    1. Lifeguarding Techniques.
      1. Responds to emergency situations
      2. Rescues swimmers in distress
      3. Administer CPR & First Aid when necessary
  1. Ability to: 
    1. React quickly and calmly in emergencies. 
    2. Lift arms above shoulder level. 
    3. Tread water for at least 2 minutes. 
    4. Swim 300 yards continuously using the breast or front crawl.  Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object – return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point. 
    5. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. 
    6. Administer first aid and CPR. 
    7. Perform rescue actions. 
    8. Move objects in excess of 50 pounds long distance (greater than 20 feet).
    9. Frequently stand and walk; sit for extended periods. 
    10. Operate a Pool filtration system if necessary. 
    11. Firmly but tactfully enforce rules and regulations. 
    12. Establish and maintain effective working relations with others. 
    13. Handle complaints and concerns in a calm, responsible manner.
    14. Ability to determine priorities, be a self-starter, follow directions, and complete assigned duties. 
    15. Need to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
