Description

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III

($25.51- $32.66 per hour)

PURPOSE: Under general supervision, assists in the operation and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant on an assigned shift.  Performs related responsibilities as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

In addition to being a full, advanced journey-level position, incumbents are expected to provide lead supervision over wastewater treatment plant maintenance staff.  Employees assigned to this class coordinate and perform the full range of skilled duties to operate, maintain, repair and modify the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the wastewater collection system.  

 

This position reports to the Utility Systems Supervisor and assists in determining equipment, personnel and material needs.  This position may act as the WWTP Supervisor (or as the Utility Systems Supervisor, if qualified) during periods when the appointed Utility Systems Supervisor is on vacation or absent from work for other reasons.

           

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Assists in the operation of valves and other related controls to distribute flow through unit process and application of chlorine and chemicals to the wastewater.

 

  1. Monitors control equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, blowers, sludge collectors, heat exchangers, sludge thickeners and other related process equipment.

 

  1. Reads meters, gauges and other instrumentation.

 

  1. Maintains a daily record of facility operation, samples collected and corrections to unit processes.

 

  1. Adjusts or alters chemical treatment of the plant as necessary.

 

  1. Collects samples for observation and analysis from unit processes.

 

  1. Performs daily and weekly laboratory analysis as needed for process adjustments and performance indicators.

 

  1. Performs preventative maintenance to equipment, such as routine service, lubrication and cleaning of process equipment and machinery.

 

  1. Operated a wide variety of tools and equipment used in minor mechanical repair and operation of process equipment.

 

  1. Assists in minor repairs to all process equipment as needed.

 

  1. Performs building and ground maintenance, which may involve weed control, gardening and janitorial services.

 

  1. Performs related duties as required.

PREREQUISITES:

  1. Desirable Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

    1. Basic principles and procedures of wastewater treatment, with specific emphasis on procedures involved in operations and maintenance of percolation ponds and secondary treatment plants.
    2. Basin principles and procedures of wastewater and storm water collection systems.
    3. Methods, materials and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility.
    4. Basic laboratory procedures and analysis.
    5. Safe work practices.
    6. Basic computer skills and knowledge of SCADA systems.

Ability to:

  1. Perform routine mathematical calculations.
  2. Follow oral and written directions.
  3. Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  4. Operate heavy equipment.

 

  1. Experience and Education:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and abilities is qualifying. Typical knowledge, skill and abilities are:

  1. Previous experience as a WWTP Operator.
  2. Specialized training in wastewater operations.

 

  1. Special Requirements:
  1. Possession of a State Water Resources Control Board Grade III Wastewater License.
  2. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
  3. Ability to work swing shifts, weekends and holidays.
  4. Ability to report to the work-site within forty (40) minutes after receiving notification of being called back.

  2. Physical Standards:

Positions in this class require moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and carrying loads weighing up to 95 pounds. Positions may also involve fieldwork, resulting in exposure to the weather and exposure to disease-causing bacteria.

Benefits

Full Time Benefits Include:

Holidays - The City recognizes 11 days each calendar year plus 1 floating holiday.  

Vacation - Employees receive 12 days of vacation per year for the first three years of employment.  This increases in increments to a maximum of 30 days for 25+ years of employment with maximum accrual caps for each increments.

Sick Leave - 3.70 hours earned per pay period with no maximum accrual cap. 

Retirement - Depending on your CalPERS history, 2%@60 in which employee pays a portion of; or, 2%@62 in which employee pays entire share.  The City does not participate in Social Security.  

Health Insurance - Employee pays a portion for employee and dependent coverage of medical, dental, health and life insurance.  

Medicare - City pays 1.45% of salary; employee pays 1.45% of salary.

SDI - 1% of salary paid by employee.

Deferred Compensation - CalPERS 457 Deferred Compensation program is available for employee participation.

Additional - Longevity pay based on years of service; uniform and boot allowance; City pays all state mandated training and licenses.
