Description

The Dixon Police Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Police Sergeant to protect and serve our growing community. This position will remain open until filled, so we encourage Police Officers interested in expanding their leadership and development experience to apply immediately for this exciting promotional opportunity.

THE POSITION: As potential Police Sergeants, candidates in these roles will shoulder significant responsibility overseeing law enforcement and patrol duties during designated shifts. Responsibilities extend beyond field supervision, including the enforcement of departmental rules, fostering discipline, resolving subordinate issues, and conducting team performance evaluations. This role requires collaboration with armed personnel, possibly in uniform or plain clothes, requiring a balance of field and office tasks. Regular public engagement, often in high-stress situations, is a key element, necessitating strong interpersonal skills and emotional resilience. Adaptability to rotational scheduling and a variety of role assignments underlines the need for flexibility and versatility.

EXAM PROCESS:  A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience will be invited to participate in the following assessment activities.

Written Test - (pass/fail).

Oral Interview - Tentatively scheduled after passing the written test.

Failure of any component during the exam process eliminates the candidate from further selection processing.

EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING:  Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete a Personal History Statement (PHS) review, personal background investigation, pre-employment medical, and drug test, an 18-month probationary period, and in accordance with Federal law, are to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.

START DATE:  Upon decision of Police Chief.

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of modern police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and identification techniques and equipment, standard radio broadcasting, police records and reports; of criminal law, including apprehension, arrest and custody pf persons committing misdemeanors and felonies; and rules of evidence pertaining to the search, seizure and preservation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases. Baic knowledge of principles and techniques of supervision and training; and of interviewing and interrogation techniques.

Ability to schedule, organize, supervise and evaluate the work of subordinates; to gather, evaluate, and use facts and evidence; to analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action; to interpret and apply laws and regulations; to demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Associate degree desirable, Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years sworn Police Officer experience with the last three (3) years of continuous employment performing law enforcement peace officer duties. Corporal, Officer-in-Charge (OIC), Field Training Officer (FTO) or like experience is desirable.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a POST Basic Certificate is required; a POST Intermediate Certificate is desirable.

Must successfully complete a background investigation as a condition of initial employment with Dixon Police Department.

A valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.

Spanish speaking ability is desirable but not required.

BENEFIT INFORMATION

CalPERS TIER DEFINITIONS MOU INTERPRETATION OF CALPERS TIERS

Retirement:                          
CalPERS Retirement System (3 % @ 55 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2.7% @ 57 formula for new CalPERS members). The City does not participate in social security.

Medical:                                
CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs.  City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance.  Maximum Family Medical Benefit Allowance (2024): $1,859 per month.

Bilingual Pay: 2.5% of Base Pay

Uniform Allowance: $1,200/fiscal year

Education Incentive:

  • 2.5% of base pay for POST Intermediate Certificate
  • 2.5% of base pay for completing 60 college semester units
  • 2.5% of base pay for POST Advanced Certificate
  • 2.5% of base pay for completing 120 college semester units

     Maximum incentive able to receive for the Education Incentive is 10%.

Physical Fitness Incentive/month: $120 Gold Achievement, $95 Silver Achievement, $70 Bronze Achievement

CalPERS Annuitants will be limited to only 960 hours in a fiscal year and this position is full-time.
