Description

The Position

The Street Maintenance Worker I/II will perform a wide variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads, sidewalks, curbing, storm drains, traffic signage, and pavement markings.

Examples of Job Duties

Street Maintenance Worker I:

Cleans work sites and equipment. Perform installation of various traffic control devices and markings. Drives truck with trailer. Performs heavy physical labor including lifting, carrying heavy objects; and shoveling, raking, and leveling asphalt. Clears and cleans roadsides, gutters, culverts and other drainage facilities. Participates in the removal, repair and replacement of storm drainage pipe. Sets-up and removes traffic safety zones for construction. Works in all weather conditions and in all terrain conditions. Works at all times of day and night. Perform preventative maintenance, adjustments and minor repairs on equipment. Cleans equipment, grease, lubricate, and fuel vehicles. Perform inspection and cleaning of drain inlets and storm lines.

Traffic Safety Assignment:

Replaces, maintains and repairs delineators, barricades, traffic dividers, signs, and similar traffic control devices. Assists in determining color of paint to be applied to street markings. Selects proper stencils for street markings. Assist with lane line striping and new installation of street markings. Assist in laying out various traffic control devices and markings. Cleans and maintains spray equipment, including stencil truck; assist in the traffic control closures during various operations. Prepares traffic signs. Assist in applying self adhesive sheeting to metal sign blanks. Trim sign edges. Assists with street sign installation. Participates in the installation of raised pavement markers.

Street Maintenance Worker II:

Manages the work at a work site. Ensures that assigned tasks are accomplished. Keeps track of daily time, work performed and materials used. Performs inspection for street re-surfacing public works projects. Clears and cleans roadsides, gutters, culverts and other drainage facilities. Participates in the removal, repair and replacement of storm drainage pipe. Due to variety of outdoor settings, needs to be able to work in all weather and terrain conditions. Due to 24-hour maintenance needs, needs to be able to work at all times of day and night. Operates light and heavy motorized construction and maintenance equipment including grappler, rollers, VacCon trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, compressors and pneumatic tools. Drives equipment to and from job sites. Loads and unload equipment; inspect equipment. Excavates, backfills, grades and rolls construction and repair sites. Cleans work sites and equipment. Perform preventative maintenance, adjustments and minor repairs on equipment. Cleans equipment. Greases, lubricates and fuels vehicles. Changes backhoe buckets and teeth. Perform various Sanitation tasks including drain inlet cleaning, storm line inspection and street sweeping. Performs heavy physical labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, shoveling, raking and leveling asphalt. Determine and perform road closures in high traffic areas using traffic control devices.

Traffic Safety Assignment:

Replaces, maintains and repairs delineators, barricades, traffic dividers, signs, and similar traffic control devices. Determines type and color of paint to be applied to street markings. Selects proper stencils for street markings. Operates pavement push striper. Paints intersection markings, crosswalks, and various traffic control devices and markings. Applies paints, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, reflective coatings and other protective and traffic safety materials. Manufactures traffic signs using computerized process. Determines correct location and placement of street sign post; assemble and install signs. Prepares adhesives and install raised pavement markers.

 

Ideal Candidate

Possess knowledge of: safety procedures when using power tools and equipment; techniques and methodology used to spread asphalt, operate an oil and paint sprayer, mix concrete, operate a jackhammer; lifting techniques, both individually and using mechanical assists such as a hoist; asphalt and oils; methods and techniques used in Class A patching, skin patching, and sand sealing; operations, work methods and limitations of equipment and tools used in street maintenance and construction; safety procedures when using power tools and equipment; techniques and methodology used to spread asphalt, operate an oil and paint sprayer, mix concrete, and operate a jackhammer; carpentry tools and methods used to creating concrete forms; mixing, pouring and finishing concrete; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions.

Have the ability to: work outdoors in all weather; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; maintain daily work records; develop and maintain cooperative work relationships with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; make routine arithmetical calculations; read and follow street maps; learn to operate a paint sprayer; learn traffic safety signage requirements; calculate necessary amount of supplies needed to complete a job; read gauges and fluid levels; perform heavy physical labor; detect uneven surfaces and level them; rake asphalt; shovel sand and asphalt; determine the slope of a roadway; mix paints, solvents and glues; use a wheelbarrow; operate an oil sprayer; clean out storm drains; clean and maintain equipment.

Be skilled to: operate shovels, wheelbarrows, hammers and other small power tools, and jackhammers; to drive light and heavy trucks; to adjust and maintain equipment; to use proper lifting techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

Street Maintenance Worker I:

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and/or experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: graduation from high school and one year of experience doing street construction work.

License: Positions in this classification require possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License at date of hire and a valid Class A California Driver's License prior to completion of probation; failure to maintain either License will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Street Maintenance Worker II:

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and/or experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be: Graduation from high school and three years street repair or construction experience, one year of which involved the operation of heavy street repair equipment.

License: Positions in this classification require possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License at date of hire and a valid Class A California Driver's License prior to completion of probation; failure to maintain either License will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
