Description

The Position

The City of Fremont currently has a vacancy for the position of Park Maintenance Worker I. The Park Maintenance Worker I performs routine maintenance and repair work in the care of parks, recreation areas and equipment. The selected candidate will be part of a work crew assigned to a daily work detail.

This recruitment will establish a pool of candidates to fill regular and temporary vacancies.

Examples of Job Duties

All Assignments

  • Responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work area.
  • Manually transports heavy objects, supplies and materials.
  • Operate ground maintenance equipment including a backhoe and tractor attachments, as well as a variety of hand and power tools.

Trees Assignment

  • Prunes and trims designated street trees to shape and improve growth.
  • Operates an aerial pruning platform, brush chipper, chain saw, stump grinder, leaf blower, and pole saw.
  • Drives a one-ton truck to locations where work is to be performed.
  • Clears areas of leaves, using rake or blower, and remove debris.

Central Parks and Sport Complex Assignment

  • Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
  • Irrigates, cultivates, prunes, plants, and transplants a variety of turf, shrubs, trees and plants.

Outlying Parks Assignment

  • Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
  • Maintains and make minor repairs to playground/picnic equipment, picnic areas and athletic fields.
  • Operates mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields.

Special Assignments

  • Performs general painting, plumbing and carpentry.
  • Maintains, repairs and renovates irrigation system controllers, valves, pipes, and related components.

Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in gardening; common names and requirements of plants, trees and shrubs; characteristics of plant pests and disease and techniques for their control; operation of variety of grounds and park power equipment; and safety practices and precautions to be used in work. In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate their ability to follow verbal and written instructions; make routine arithmetic calculations; learn traffic safety signage; and learn to operate a variety of equipment such as front-end loader, brush chipper, stumper, riding mower and various mechanical equipment and vehicles.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be:

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent

Experience: Six (6) months experience performing grounds maintenance work.

Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at date of hire. Must obtain a Class B California Driver's License prior to completion of probation.
