The Town of Atherton is approximately five square miles. The City is located in the San Francisco Peninsula in Southern San Mateo County. Atherton is a small, rural, and residential community, with no industrial land-use base. Native trees cover the five miles of town. Atherton’s current population is 7,133 according to the California Census in 2020.       

The Town of Atherton invites you to apply for the position of Police Sergeant. This is an internal and external opportunity. Under the general supervision of the Police Commander, the Police Sergeant plans, schedules, deploys, trains, supervises, and reviews the work of Police Officers and civilian staff.  The Sergeant performs a wide range of patrol and related duties in the prevention of crime, maintenance of public order, protection of life and property, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances.  As part of the Management Team, the Sergeant assists in the preparation of collision investigations and criminal cases, provides courtroom testimony, serves in specialized organizational roles, and assists with various administrative functions. 

A letter of interest and current resume is required. All submissions will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training, and other job-related qualifications.. An extensive background includes a polygraph examination and/or voice stress analysis, completion of the POST Personal History Statement along with medical and psychological exams if selected.

Those meeting the stated qualifications / requirements will be reviewed for selection to participate in the interview and evaluation process for the position. Those selected to participate in the competitive process will be provided with the details of the testing process, which has been tentatively scheduled for the week of August 26, 2024.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities, which would be typically acquired through:

Education & Experience

• Completion of an associate degree and 4 years’ experience as a sworn Police Officer.
• Must have applied for the Intermediate P.O.S.T. Certificate.
• Highly desirable qualifications may include: an Advanced or Supervisory Certificate from P.O.S.T.; bachelor’s degree and/or completion of the Supervisors’ Leadership Institute (SLI) Course.

To excel as a Police Sergeant, you need a comprehensive blend of knowledge, skills and experience.  A thorough understanding of law enforcement protocols, including arrest procedures, search and seizure laws, use of force policies, and evidence handling, is essential for ensuring officers operate within legal boundaries. Familiarize yourself with our department's policies, regulations, and standard operating procedures. This includes administrative procedures, disciplinary protocols, and codes of conduct. As a sergeant, you'll be responsible for leading and managing a team of officers. Knowledge of leadership theories, personnel management, conflict resolution techniques, and performance evaluation methods will help you effectively supervise and motivate your team. Understanding community policing concepts and strategies is crucial for building positive relationships with community members, addressing local concerns, and implementing proactive crime prevention initiatives. Stay updated on legal developments and ethical standards relevant to law enforcement. This includes constitutional rights, case law precedents, ethical dilemmas, and the ethical responsibilities of police officers. Effective communication is vital for a police sergeant. Have strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly, resolve conflicts, and interact professionally with colleagues, community members, and stakeholders. Have the ability to assess risks, evaluate options, and make informed decisions in high-pressure situations. This includes critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to weigh potential consequences effectively.

The San José Fire Department is looking to fill a Senior Geographic Systems Specialist position within the BAS/Fire IT division. This role will manage mapping projects and, when applicable, application development activities to support the mapping function. Under the direction of the Department Information Technology Manager, the key duties and responsibilities of this position include:
 

• Oversee GIS data management efforts, including Fire-specific layers, ensuring the quality and timely input of the data. This involves performing quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) and assisting with hands-on data management to minimize backlogs.
• Coordinate with various departments and the Enterprise GIS team on Fire data conversion and consolidation efforts, contributing to the Enterprise GIS data repository.
• Provide geodatabase development and programming (SQL Server), with the ability to understand complex database concepts, interfaces, and the implications of different database designs.
• Assist in the development and management of GIS project plans, including defining requirements, setting tasks and resource assignments, and ensuring standards, deadlines, and quality standards are met.
• Ensure City staff using GIS receive necessary training and technical support.
• Hire and manage GIS teams, including GIS I/II specialists, cartographers, data managers, analysts, and vendors, to meet GIS project objectives and timelines. Build team capacity to provide GIS project support, training, map production, and analysis services in addition to data management.
• Perform analytical analysis with large datasets.
• Prepare and perform data modeling and create entity-relationship diagrams.
• Develop, document, use, and troubleshoot workflows.
• Troubleshoot software issues related to all GIS service delivery functions.

Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services department (PRNS) is recruiting to fill a Community Services Supervisor position in the BeautifySJ Program. The BeautifySJ Program is a blight reduction, community beautification and encampment management program within the Community Services Division. The position will report to a Program Manager.

The BeautifySJ Unit is currently looking for a manager to join our dynamic team. This manager will lead a team of full-time staff to coordinate blight reduction efforts, which may include encampment management programs. The position will be housed at the Kirk Community Center (home of BeautifySJ), and will have a hybrid work schedule which includes working in at the site and when necessary, field visits. The position works 40 hours per week with a typical schedule of Monday?Friday, 7:30am?4:30pm but will vary depending on activities and events and will require evening or weekend work.

BeautifySJ Initiative is a dynamic initiative that works to reduce blight and beautify the City via an inter-departmental strategy that coordinates and leverages resources to address blight issues. The Community Services Supervisor would work collaboratively with staff in PRNS, Housing, the Environmental Services Department, Code Enforcement, the Department of Transportation and interjurisdictional partners.

Job duties for the position include but are not limited to:

• Supervising a staff of professional community coordinators, community activity workers and maintenance workers that coordinate and lead blight reduction and beautification programs and projects in the field.
• Manage and coordinate the delivery of services as outlined in established partnership agreements.
• Have the ability to quickly form relationships with internal City Departments and external partners to meet established goals and outcomes.
• Performing important and difficult public contact and liaison work with stakeholders, external partners, and Council Offices.

THE POSITION

The City of Rocklin is hiring Academy Graduate Police Officers to join the Rocklin Police Department. Academy Graduate Police Officers will join the department and begin an 18-month program to earn their Basic POST certificate. An example of duties that an Academy Graduate Police Officers will perform under close supervision are:

• Assumes responsibility for the preservation of the public peace and the protection of life and property by preventing crime and enforcing all laws.
• Patrols an assigned area in an automobile, other vehicle, or on foot for the purpose of preventing criminal activity and enforcing traffic laws and regulations; issues citations and makes arrests as necessary; responds to calls for protection of life and property and performs enforcement duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by 30 college-level semester units from a regionally accredited educational institution.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class C Driver License and a satisfactory driving record is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• Certificate of completion from a POST approved California law enforcement academy.

Working Conditions

Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation.

Must be willing to work emergencies as well as evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Must meet physical, psychological, and background standards established by POST as well as ongoing peace officer requirements pursuant to federal, state, and local legislation. This classification requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment. This classification functions as a peace officer within the authority and limits of California Penal Code Sections 830.1(a) and 832.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Three years of experience in a health, social or community services organization, including at least two years of significant responsibility for one or more of the following: program and budget development or coordination of community resources or program evaluation.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of High School or College Summer Inter for the Community Development Department. This employment opportunity is excellent for a well- organized person seeking some summer work experience and getting exposure to government and specifically to work in Community Development. The primary responsibility of this position is to help with data entry and document preparation. The position will also be able to shadow planners and building staff on counter duties, attend meetings and assist staff on planning projects as schedules permit.
