The Position

The Department of Public Works seeks well-qualified candidates for the position of Principal Civil Engineer. This is an amazing opportunity to join a hard-working team of results-driven professionals.

The Principal Civil Engineer plans, organizes, and directs the staff and operations of a major functional section within the Public Works Department, including engineering design, construction management, surveying, and mapping. In addition, the Principal Civil Engineer supervises professional and technical staff related to these functions and performs a variety of professional engineering tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. The current vacancy is in the Design and Construction Management Section.

This position is a full managerial position in the Engineer series, with the following responsibilities:

• Supervise, coach, mentor, and manage performance of professional and technical staff.
• Work cooperatively with the other Divisions and Sections in the Department, including providing timely budget or cost information, as well as, working with other County Departments.
• Make recommendations to the Deputy Director on staffing-levels needed based on anticipated design projects, construction inspection, and administration needs.
• Make recommendations to the Deputy Director on staffing levels, positions, and responsibilities for the Department’s mapping tasks, map filing needs, and efficient storage of information.
• Understand, manage, and budget the funding sources that finance the different activities in the Design and Construction Management Section, including the costs associated with general drafting, counter assistance, and cost of reviewing record maps.
• Oversee and manage the budget and performance measurement requirements and reporting for the Design and Construction Management Section.
• Oversee and manage the design of infrastructure projects ensuring they meet quality standards and project goals.
• Act as the Resident Engineer on construction projects ensuring they are completed safely, on-time and on-budget and per the contract documents.
• Review competed projects with the applicable Divisions or Departments to improve on future projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure/Certification: Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the state of California.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

• A typical way to qualify is three years of responsible supervisory engineer experience including difficult and complex field and office work in planning, design, construction, and maintenance of a variety of civil engineering projects.

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of civil engineering and municipal public works planning, design, construction, and administration.
• Methods and materials used in the design, construction, and inspection of varied civil engineering projects.
• Principles and practices of public administration, organization, and management.
• Principles, practices, and procedures of budget preparation, budget administration, and budget control.
• Principles and practices of contract preparations, negotiations, and administration.
• Practices and procedures as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies, and operational needs.
• Pertinent local, state, and federal laws, rules, regulations, and enforcement procedures.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Weighmaster in the Zero Waste Division of the Public Works Department! Working in the scale house at the solid waste transfer station, the Weighmaster is responsible for assessing incoming loads and providing direction to customers.

In this role, you will weigh vehicles entering and leaving the transfer station; estimate volumes of small loads and assess contents; collect established fees for dumping; provide information and direct customers; and use personal computers for data collection, computation, reconciliation, record keeping and reporting. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is: 
Equivalent to completion of high school and either three (3) years of solid waste collection and disposal experience, or three (3) years of general office or accounting support work experience. Prior experience in refuse collection and/or experience in handling of hazardous materials is desirable.

Other requirements include:
Must be bondable and able to work early morning, evening, holiday and weekend shifts in a dusty, windy environment without restrictions. Within a six (6) month probationary period must successfully complete four (4) weeks of full-time equivalent on-the-job training to prepare the employee to assume the full range of Weighmaster duties, as certified by senior supervisory staff.

Successful completion of classes in Customer Service Dispute/Conflict Resolution is desirable.

About Zookeeper Full Time/Part Time: The position performs work involving the care and feeding of zoo, domestic farm, and/or non-domestic animals and maintenance of enclosures, grounds and service areas; working with animals under all types of climatic conditions to prepare them for presentations, training, capture and restraint, basic husbandry, and behavioral enrichment. In this role, you will act as the division head and will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the programs and activities of the General Services Division. A Dance Instructor (Program Specialist) will plan, prepare and instruct recreation activities. Activities may include art, cooking, dance, pre-school program and other program areas. Programs are designed for children ages 4-17 (primarily 5-12) years of age.

• Different program areas will have different skills and knowledge requirements for the position; check with Recreation Supervisor. (For example: 6 ECE unites required for pre-school instructor)
• One school year teaching experience
• At least one year's experience working with children in an academic setting
• Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required

Minimum qualifications for consideration: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in water or wastewater treatment plant operations.

Experience: Experience commensurate with each grade level of certification as required by the State of California, which includes some course work in the area of assignment.

License and Certificate:

Water: Possession of a Grade I, II or III Water Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the State of California Department of Public Health.

Wastewater: Possession of a Grade I, II, or III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board.

All Positions: Possession of a valid Class C California driver license. Positions in Wastewater require a Class B driver license within 12 months of employment.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid C.P.R. Certificate.
