The Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking to fill 16 full-time Maintenance Assistant positions.

The Maintenance Assistant total salary range is $24.74 to $31.56 hourly or $51,459.20 to $65,644.80 annually . The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

The Infrastructure Maintenance Division of DOT is looking to fill 16 full-time vacant positions. These positions perform work in the maintenance and repair of concrete, pavement, sewers, landscaping, traffic signs, and traffic markings. Duties include digging holes, trenches, and ditches. They also operate a wide range of hand, mechanical, and power tools, as well as a variety of light and heavy vehicles, trucks, and equipment relevant to work performed, ensuring compliance with safe working practices. Maintenance crews provide services seven days a week. Individuals in this classification may be required to work alternate work shifts, including grave and swing, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Under general supervision of the Parks Supervisor, performs a variety of duties in maintaining and repairing parks facilities, city buildings, city grounds, swimming pool. 

• This is a part-time temporary, non-benefitted position. 
• Flexible schedule; not-to-exceed 1,000 hours per calendar year. 

Temporary Parks Maintenance Worker - Employee will be assigned 28 - 40 hours a week until the 1,000 hours are completed or season has concluded. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES 

Essential duties are inclusive of, but not limited to the following:  

• Mowing, weed-eating, edges, trimming. 
• Cleaning facilities, playgrounds, swimming pool, restrooms and buildings. 
• Up keeping fields, courts and other facilities. 
• Performing basic maintenance work.
• Up keeping equipment, tools and other supplies in proper condition. 
• Maintaining proper tree pruning and trimming on trees.
• Operating all hand tools required for work including: shovels, rakes, picks, hoes, wrenches, drills.
• All other duties assigned.

THE POSITION

Under supervision of the Public Works Manager, the Maintenance Worker I performs entry level unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled labor in construction, maintenance, and related service activities applied to the areas of general landscaping, grounds maintenance and street maintenance.

 TYPICAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Grounds Maintenance:  Operate mowers and other equipment and tools for purposes of cutting grass, trimming trees and shrubs, and planting and transplanting flowers, bulbs, shrubs, and trees.
• Storm Prevention Maintenance:  Assist in cleaning ditches, culverts, and storm drains.
• Street Maintenance: Assist in repainting of pavement markings, basic pothole, and street repair; installation and repair of street signs and markers; mixing and application of Class III pesticide materials.
• Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance:  Assist in the care, maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• General:  Contact residents concerning maintenance and service problems; refer complaints and requests to proper supervisory personnel. Assist supervisory personnel in preparing and maintaining proper records and logs. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS

The general knowledge of basic construction methods, materials and terminology, standard hand tools, light equipment, and light vehicles; general knowledge of basic safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools, light equipment, and vehicles; general knowledge of basic methods and practices involved in the care of shrubs, trees and flowers. Ability to learn technically complex construction and maintenance procedures in water systems, streets, parks and building maintenance; use hand and power tools; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under inclement weather conditions; work alone or with small groups.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid California driver's license and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving history.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Completion of high school or its equivalent, or completion of a trade or vocational school.  Some directly related experience is desirable.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• Monthly Salary: $4,855 to $6,269 per month. Placement within the range will be based upon the selected candidate’s experience and salary history.
• Health/Medical Benefit: Health/Medical Benefit: Choice of coverage with Kaiser or Blue Shield. The City pays 80% of monthly premiums at each coverage level. To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, signs, water meters, sewers, storm drains, pump stations and tree maintenance. 

The purpose of this recruitment is to hire a Temporary / Part-Time position.  Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for employment as an Intern.  Temporary / Part-Time employees work no more than 130 hours per month AND 960 hours per fiscal year. Typical work schedule will be three 8-hour shifts per week, excluding weekends and evenings.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate for this position should have previous Road Maintenance experience; sidewalks, driveways, roads, curbs, and gutters, although not required. The Ideal Candidate will be able to follow directions, demonstrate good communication skills (orally and in writing), be flexible, arrive on time, have good attendance, a positive attitude, be able to work independently with limited supervision, and a willingness to take on and learn new skills. Possessing a Class B commercial Driver’s license is desired, though not required upon hire.

Operate a variety of light and moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment including such pieces as a loader, dump truck, water truck, rubber-tired and steel rollers, rubber-tired tractor with all attachments (except backhoe attachment), striping equipment, and trencher in order to perform a variety of routine construction and maintenance operations.  Spread asphalt in patching and repairing streets.  Use concrete cutting equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.  Paint and install traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, and curbs; operate a striping truck; manufacture and install traffic signs and remove signs no longer required.  Install and remove traffic control barricades and cones.  Assist in a variety of tree maintenance activities including low limb, stump routing, tree watering, and tree planting.  Utilize proper safety precautions and comply with policies and procedures in the Department Illness and Injury Prevention Program.  Operate equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates.  Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Respond to inquiries from the general public.  Clean storm grates and drains.  Perform work in emergency situations as required.  Perform minor and preventive maintenance on paint spraying equipment, compressors, sprayers, compactors, and other construction equipment.  Work cooperatively with others.  Perform related duties as assigned.

Community Services Department. The Ideal Candidate for the current vacancy is someone
who has a good understanding of many aspects of the maintenance of facilities, parks, janitorial, and horticulture. This position requires a “team player” with good interpersonal, time
management, and communication skills. The Ideal Candidate must be highly self-motivated,

standby and overtime as necessary.

Park Maintenance Worker I:

This is an entry-level classification in the park maintenance worker series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties. May be required to work any shift, including a regular work-shift that includes weekends and holidays, and routinely participate in a weeklong stand-by shift. Park Maintenance Worker I will usually exercise less independence, discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods.

Park Maintenance Worker II:

This is the journey level in the park maintenance worker series. This class differs from Parks Maintenance Worker I in that incumbent performs more complex parks maintenance duties, including the requirement to work any shift, weekends, and holidays, to work independently, exercise judgment, and operate the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment. The incumbent Park Maintenance Worker II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Park Maintenance I level, or when filled from the outside requires prior work experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

Performing general grounds cleaning, including emptying trash receptacles, mopping, sweeping, and raking City parks, ball field maintenance/set up, and Cemetery as needed. Maintain irrigation, maintain synthetic turf, mow, cultivate, prune, weed, renovate, and fertilize grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Operate power mowers, turf groomers, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, front-end loader, edgers, air compressors, and other equipment. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work, while all safe work procedures i.e., necessary PPE. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities, swimming pools, and cemetery/interment operations.  Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that the failure of such attendance undermines the City’s ability to provide critical services to the employees, department and the public.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS 

Install, maintain and replace playground equipment and fences; assemble tables, benches and bleachers. Applying fertilizers and spraying various herbicides and pesticides in City park and recreation areas. Respond to inquiries from the general public. Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. Assist in setting up community services and special events. Maintain, repair and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, water closet, urinals, water regulators and pressure valves, and building maintenance as required. Work cooperatively with others. Meet all Standby Program requirements; work any shift including weekends and holidays. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Park Maintenance Worker I:

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  Six (6) months of experience in the care and maintenance of landscapes or facilities.

License and Certificate:  Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Park Maintenance Worker II:

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  One (1) year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Park Maintenance Worker I in the City of Woodland.

License and Certificate:  Required upon hire, possession of a California Driver’s License. It is highly desirable to possess a State of California Qualified Applicator Certificate, Category B.

The City of Orinda is looking for responsible, courteous individuals who enjoy working in a hands-on environment, can work independently of supervision and have experience dealing tactfully and effectively with members of the public.  The successful applicant will work on a part time basis with a schedule which will include evening and weekend hours, depending upon programs, rentals and events.   

The Facility Attendant performs custodial duties related to the care and cleaning of assigned facilities, performs a wide variety of duties for events, classes and programs, including setting up and tearing down of tables, chairs, equipment and supplies and will perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provide friendly and professional customer service by greeting Community Center visitors, serving as a main point of contact during activities and events primarily in evenings, weekends and special events.

Performs custodial duties at assigned facilities which include, but are not limited to cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, waxing, stripping and polishing floors; cleaning furniture, woodwork, fixtures, equipment, supplies, doors, windows, walls, walkways, driveways, and facility grounds; disposing of trash.

Set up all necessary equipment and furniture such as tables, chairs, podiums, and A/V equipment for indoor and/or outdoor events.

Inspects facilities and equipment, reports issues in a timely manner to appropriate higher-level staff; performs minor facility maintenance.

Explain and follow City and department policies and procedures.

Provide information and feedback to Facility and Parks Supervisor.

Opens, closes, secures and alarms facilities in compliance with standard procedures.

Supervise and interact with rental guests, responding by assisting with any facility needs.

Assists in monitoring and maintaining equipment and supplies.

May perform clean up duties as needed, including but not limited to:  move and arrange furniture and equipment, restroom cleaning, sweeping and mopping, and garbage pick-up and removal.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Equivalent to a High School Diploma.

Experience:  Experience in custodial and facility operations is desirable.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License with a demonstrated history of safe driving.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Must be willing to work a scheduled variety of hours, which may include evenings, and/or weekends, as needed.

Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes to enable the employee to safely lift, move, climb, walk safely on even or uneven grounds, or maneuver in whatever way may be necessary to successfully perform the duties of their position; ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and pre-employment medical exam.  Additionally, individuals working in Parks & Recreation are required to be tested for TB.
