LIBRARIAN I/II (For internal/promotional only)

The City of San Bruno offers a unique opportunity to serve as a Librarian I/II, with a particular focus on youth services. Librarians perform professional library work including programming, reference services, cataloging, interlibrary loans, and children’s or adult services, with an emphasis on fostering literacy and lifelong learning among young patrons. They work under the supervision of the Library Services Manager and the Community Services Superintendent and may provide indirect supervision to paraprofessional staff of the library, ensuring high-quality support for youth and other community members alike.
Librarian I is entry level position, responsible for a limited scope of a library program area, which requires the application of fundamental library science principles and practices.
Librarian II is a journey level position, distinguished from that of Librarian I, by the greater complexity of the assignments and by the greater independence with which the employee is expected to operate.
Examples of the essential duties and responsibilities include:
Perform professional work in rendering reference services, reader's advisory, and library instruction to patrons, with a special emphasis on youth and children’s services. This includes classification and cataloging of materials, ordering of books, documents, periodicals, and other materials.
Assist in the development and implementation of programs and services such as outreach to homebound patrons, public relations, coordination of volunteers, children's services outreach through the city’s programming network and other social media outlets.
In addition to graduation from a master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college of university, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the following competencies:
Initiating actions to reduce barriers and leverage the advantages of diverse cultures, interpersonal styles, ideas, and professional and educational backgrounds.
Identifying and understanding problems and opportunities by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information; choosing the best course of action by establishing clear decision criteria, generating and evaluating alternatives, and making timely decisions; taking action that is consistent with available facts and constraints and optimize probable consequences.
Providing feedback, instruction, and development guidance to help others excel in their current or future job responsibilities; planning and supporting the development of individual skills and abilities.
Taking action to establish and maintain connections with people outside one’s formal work group, including those outside the organization (e.g., peers, cross-functional partners, and vendors), who are willing and able to provide the information, ideas, expertise, and/or influence needed to achieve work goals.
Minimum Requirements
This position requires a master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university. Additionally, Librarian II requires two years of increasingly responsible professional experience performing duties similar to a Librarian I in the City of San Bruno.
Special Requirements
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
