You are excited about this position because you will:

• Manages a section or division by planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of subordinates. Reviews surveying or map requirements and resolves problems as needed. Examines areas to be surveyed and assigns the appropriate survey party. Checks field survey or map work in progress and directs subordinates when necessary. Performs surveying or map processing operations when necessary to assist staff in difficult situations.
• Manages the budget (including revenues for map processing division) for survey. Collects and reviews survey notes or map applications for completeness and accuracy. Supervises the maintenance of official records, maps, and survey reports and the preparation of related reports.
• Coordinates with other city agencies on requests for service, time schedules, and cost estimates. Assists the Division Manager or Bureau Manager in making revisions of programs, objectives, and goals.
• Develops, interprets, and coordinates surveying and map processing policy and methods for the department.
• Processes and checks subdivision map applications, plans, and survey records prepared by licensed land surveyors for technical and record information accuracy with respect to the California Subdivision Map Act and the San Francisco Subdivision
• Writes and checks boundary legal descriptions and performs other professional duties which require a licensed land surveyor.
• Manages horizontal and vertical control systems which may include use of Global Positioning System (GPS) monumentation/documentation program. Implements and maintains Geographic Information System (GIS) base map system.
• Updates codes and regulations and reviews proposed bills and budget, cost, and fee assessments. Makes regular contacts with the general public, other departments, contractors, private surveyors, and outside organizations relative to municipal mapping and survey.
• Prepares legislation to change official street legislation, approve subdivision maps, and refers same to the Board of Supervisors.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

How to qualify

1. Four (4) years of experience supervising survey parties.
2. Possession of a valid California Professional Land Surveyor License, or a valid California Civil Engineer License (issued in 1981 or before).
3. Possession of a valid California driver license (at least Class C).

Note: At least one year of experience in county subdivision mapping is required for the position located in the Bureau of Street Use and Mapping at the Department of Public Works in addition to the Minimum Qualifications above.

Animal Care Attendants report to the Shelter Manager of Animal Care and Services and are primarily responsible for feeding, caring for, and moving shelter animals; euthanizing animals; and cleaning and disinfecting kennels and cages. DEFINITION

• OPERATOR I (COLLECTION)
  Under general supervision or direction, the Operator I (Collection) is responsible for the overall operation of the wastewater collections system, which includes the repair and maintenance of the sewer collection system and pump stations.
   
• OPERATOR II (COLLECTION)
  Under general direction, supervises the operation of the Collections System of the Wastewater Treatment Plant on a designated shift to ensure processing and discharge of wastewater which complies with performance standards of State regulatory agencies; perform any combination of tasks involved with inspection, construction, repair, and preventive, corrective and emergency maintenance of sanitary personnel; prepares logs and other records; performs maintenance tasks as required and other related duties as required.
   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION REQUIREMENTS

For the Collections System, ability to locate, detect cause, and correct sewer stoppages; detect and perform minor repairs and adjustments to sewer equipment; maintain pumps and related mechanical equipment; and report to work at any time during an emergency.  Perform electrical and mechanical repairs, maintenance work and modification to equipment used in a water quality control plant; use various mechanic’s tools with skill and accuracy; available for standby on sewer calls on a rotation basis; follow oral and written directions; maintain working relationships with other employees.  (See Physical Demands section as it relates to Essential Function Requirements.)

  • Performs operation and maintenance on sanitary sewer pump station.

  • Performs mechanical work in repairing and installing equipment.
  • Operates compressor, air gun tamper, backhoe and other related construction tools.
  • May undertake minor carpentry, plumbing, cement work and electrical.

• OPERATOR II (COLLECTION)
  Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead a crew in the safe performance of preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance of sanitary sewers
  • Respond to service requests, unclog mainline stoppages, and keep records on sewer line cleanings and state of existing problems within the Collections System
  • Repair mainline breaks, replace broken pipe and reconnect pipe sections
  • Operate power rodder, jet truck, backhoe and TV equipment
  • Conduct periodic inspections and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to wastewater pumping stations and equipment
  • Keep daily logs and records on equipment; makes reports to the supervisor
  • Provide technical assistance and prescribe work methods and safety procedures to maintenance workers and utility workers
  • Inspect installation of new sewer lines, laterals and related structures; may study blueprints and specifications preparatory to inspection of construction project
  • Supervises the work of all operating personnel assigned to shift; trains and evaluates performance of shift employees, enforces safety procedures in conformance with policy of plant’s safety program.

The San José - Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF) is one of the largest advanced wastewater treatment facilities in the nation and treats water from homes and businesses in the cities of San José, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, and unincorporated areas within Santa Clara County. The Capital Improvement Program (CIP) division is leading one of the largest public works programs in San José's history! The CIP division performs the overall planning and project delivery for all aspects of the RWF treatment process, including program administration and budget planning. The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking to fill one ( 1 ) full-time Senior Engineering Technician vacanc y in the CIP division. This position is a higher-level class in the Engineering Technic ian series and may supervise Engineering Technicians and Interns.

The selected candidate will work from the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. The Senior Engineering Technician will be responsible for providing technical support to a variety of ESD projects through planning, detailed design, bid and award, procurement, construction, post construction, and code compliance. This position may report to a Superintendent, a Program Manager, an Associate Engineer, or a Sanitary Engineer. This position may supervise and train associate engineering technicians and/or administrative staff .

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

• Collecting and analyzing field, operational, and technical data.

Overview:
The Associate Electrical Engineer will support the 24 x 7 continuous Water Utility raw, treated, and purified water operations, capital improvement projects, annual maintenance work plan, and asset management plans. They will be responsible for the planning, design, development, implementation, modification, installation, and maintenance of the Water Utility's critical electrical distribution systems in the area of water pumping, conveyance and treatment while ensuring work quality and adherence to professional codes, standards, and Valley Water specifications.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
As a member of the Utility Electrical and Control Systems Engineering team:

• Plan, organize, schedule, assign, review, supervise and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
• Serve as a technical resource in electrical engineering including formulating projects, assessing program effectiveness, and analyzing a variety of unusual conditions, problems, or questions; oversee quality assurance and quality control activities within field/specialty of engineering.
• Conduct engineering studies, investigations, and analyses, such as conditional assessments, feasibility reports, event incident/root cause analysis reports, and engineering evaluations in support of a planned project/improvement, system deficiencies, non-code compliant conditions, and electrical system and process anomalies.
• Prepare electrical engineering schematics, specifications, drawings, wiring diagrams, power, lighting, and floor plans, conduit and wire schedules, electrical details, and other supporting documentation for commercial and industrial applications; perform economic and financial analysis of projects; provide cost estimates and cost benefit analysis for comparison; review and comment on drawings, plans, and other work submitted by external consultants, engineers, contractors, and developers for conformance with current standards.
• Identify and report electrical deficiencies and safety issues; investigate and create root cause analysis from electrical system reports; interview operations and maintenance staff and conduct field observations and inspections; develop recommendations to mitigate electrical disturbances, outages, and abnormalities; lead or assist in resolving deficiencies and safety issues.
• May grow into a supervisory role to plan, organize, schedule, assign, review, supervise and evaluate the work of assigned staff.

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (ABET accredited college/university).

• Experience in working with potential vendors with adequate information for bids working with potential vendors and evaluating bids preferred.

The Public Works Department is comprised of Regulatory Compliance, Engineering, Field Maintenance, Facilities/Fleet, Wastewater Treatment, and Asset Management Divisions.  Each division is led by one of two Deputy Directors, who report to the Director of Public Works.  The department is responsible for the City’s major capital projects and infrastructure including streets, street lights, traffic signals, publicly owned facilities, sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, a major lagoon, dams, and levees; as well as solid waste and environmental programs.  The Department is responsible for regulatory compliance related to Stormwater, Pretreatment, Solid Waste, and other environmental programs, as well as public outreach to raise awareness to the general public and other stakeholders about these issues.

What You’ll Do

The Environmental Compliance Inspector performs inspections and sampling of industrial, commercial and residential sources of discharge to the City’s sanitary sewer and storm drain systems to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; inspects hazardous materials storage areas; responds to reports of illicit discharges; performs water quality testing; and conducts public outreach activities.  This classification is distinguished from all other technical and professional classifications in the City by its specialized assignments in support of a variety of environmental compliance programs.  The duties of the class involve courteous, effective and tactful interaction with the community to ensure compliance with wastewater and stormwater discharge regulations.  Persons assigned to this class perform or assist in performing all functions associated with the City’s Source Control (Pretreatment and Pollution Prevention) and Stormwater programs.  This position reports to the Regulatory Compliance Manager or higher level department personnel.
