Recreation Supervisor (Aquatics and Fitness)

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team at the forthcoming state-of-the-art aquatic and recreation facility set to open in Summer 2024. The brand-new 49,360 sq ft facility will feature indoor and outdoor lap pools, a zero-entry wading pool, fitness amenities, a gymnasium, a walking track, and ample space for programming and rentals. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for professional recreation duties, encompassing the planning, organization, coordination, and supervision of aquatics and fitness programs at the facility. We are seeking candidates with substantial experience in Aquatics and Fitness, and preference will be given to those holding certifications such as AFO, CPO, LGI, WSI, or other relevant Aquatics and Fitness Certifications.

Responsibilities of the Recreation Services Supervisor include, but are not limited to:

•    Managing and supervising assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources; planning and organizing workloads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff and volunteers; reviews progress and directs and implements changes as needed.

•    Providing leadership and direction in the development of short and long range plans; gathering, interpreting, and preparing data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinating department activities with other departments and agencies as needed.

•    Providing professional advice to supervisors; making presentations to supervisors, boards, commissions, civic groups and the general public.

•    Communicating official plans, policies and procedures to staff and the general public.

•    Assuring that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performing cost control activities; monitoring revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control; preparing annual budget requests; assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time.

•    Determining work procedures, preparing work schedules, and expediting workflow; studying and standardizing procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

•    Issuing written and oral instructions; assigning duties and examining work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.

•    Responding to public inquiries about recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.

•    Preparing for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, and related communications regarding recreation programs.

Requirements

In addition to graduation from a four-year accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, social work, gerontology, public administration or another closely related field of study – the candidate will also have three (3) years related paid recreation work experience at a level comparable to Recreation Services Coordinator or similar position with significant experience in the implementation of recreation and human services program or activities. 

Additionally, the candidate should possess a valid California driver’s license or ability to obtain one, and may be required to obtain and maintain a Class B driver’s license. First Aid, American Red Cross Lifeguard  Instructor, CPR, and other specialized certifications may be required based on supervisory assignment.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER

This is a Full Time, non-sworn, recruitment. 

Under direction of a Division Commander and supervision of a Sergeant, relieves sworn police personnel from a variety of non-hazardous tasks and responds to service calls of a non-felonious and non-violent nature, and performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Responds to a wide variety of non-hazardous service calls and thoroughly investigates all details of incidents;
• Observe, report and may follow-up on conditions which pose potential threats to public safety, health and welfare and the quality of life;
• Read and write at the levels necessary to perform the job of a community service officer
• Write non-moving parking violations;
• Act as department liaison between homeless persons and local homeless, mental health, and social services providers;

The City of Berkeley is seeking a temporary (not to exceed 6 months) Manager of Aging Services! In this role, you will oversee four major Aging Services program areas, including senior centers, nutrition, transportation, and case management, as well as supervision of the division’s management team. Duties include planning, analyzing, and evaluating programs/services division-wide.

The Manager will also oversee Division budgets ($6.1 million), oversee management of Division facilities, and ensure the development and implementation performance goals and objectives using the newly developed results-based accountability framework. This position has the opportunity to coordinate and facilitate strategic planning initiatives, including the City’s Age-Friendly Action Plan, and partner with internal Departments/programs and community organizations to provide services to the older adult community, and further strengthen community resilience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in social science, public health, social work, business or public administration or a related field, and five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional experience involving program planning and administration, preferably in programs for aging populations or closely related social services or public health program, of which at least two (2) years included supervisory responsibility.

A Master's Degree in any of the above disciplines is desirable.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required. Must attend evening and weekend meetings as required.

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision of the Community and Recreation Services Director, the Community Services Manager administers and manages the Youth and Family Services (YFS) and Homeless Programs of the Community and Recreation Services Department for the City of Union City. YFS services include support for youth violence intervention and prevention through mentoring, employment, outreach, case management, individual and family counseling, parent education, and crisis support. Homeless Programs provide direct case management services to unhoused individuals and families.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

This is a single position management classification assigned overall management and coordination of service delivery for the Community Services including Youth & Family Services, Homelessness Programs and other community-based social services. The Community Services Manager is responsible for achieving defined fiscal and programmatic objectives including but not limited to identifying, preparing, and managing grant proposals, budget, and performance reports for federal, state, and local funding.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Manages and implements a delivery system of social services to youth, families and individuals in crises and the unhoused including but not limited to: at-risk youth, dependent children, homelessness support, sustenance and nutrition support, victims of child/adult abuse, domestic violence, and those experiencing mental health and substance abuse.
• Develops, integrates and oversees new social services programs into division/department administrative structure.
• Writes effective and persuasive grant proposals to secure funding to support City projects, programs and activities.
• Prepares performance reports for federal, state and local funding, and program performance and other reports as required by the City.
• Ensures timely and accurate use and reporting of grant funds consistent with purpose(s) outlined by the funding source, and communication of proposed variances to use of funds as necessary.

• Serves as a departmental liaison with community social and mental health agencies, local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, the faith community, community organizations and non-profit organizations, the school district, and others to adequately assess and represent community needs.
• Participates in department, city and community meetings as necessary.
• Conducts assessments to identify appropriate resources and provide referral services (secondary duty).

The Department

The Library and Community Services department is responsible for providing excellent customer service through recreational, educational, and cultural programs for children, adults and seniors. Our facilities include 221 acres of parkland distributed among 13 parks, two libraries, two community centers, two public pools, three childcare centers, two gymnasiums, and one gymnastics center. Included in the parks and recreation areas are tennis and pickleball courts, dog parks, softball diamonds, picnic areas, playgrounds, soccer fields, a skate park, shared use of a performing arts center and open space.  The City of Menlo Park is preparing to open a state-of-the-art new facility that will incorporate a community center, gymnasium, aquatics center, senior center, youth center, and branch library in 2024.

Under general supervision, lead, and conduct activities in the delivery of recreation program areas including camps, preschool, tots, after school programs, parks and nature, teens, boxing, youth and adult sports, special events, and active adults; oversee the proper use of indoor and outdoor community recreational facilities, perform a variety of custodial tasks; assist the public and staff in their use of the facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics: 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Aide assists in the proper use of a community recreational facility and assist Recreation Leaders in providing a variety of recreation programs. The Recreation Leader classification is distinguished from the Recreation Aide level in the complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, the nature of the public contact made, and its training responsibilities of new staff. Positions at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.

The Urban Forestry Division of the City of Fremont has two paid internships available for immediate hiring.  Through a variety of tasks and duties, interns will gain well-rounded, first-hand work experience and observational knowledge in the fields of urban forestry management and municipal administration.

The Role

The role consists of assisting city staff in the preservation, maintenance, and sustainable growth of Fremont’s urban forest. Examples of division responsibilities include program administration, tree assessment, community outreach and education, grant management, data collection and analysis, contracts and vendor management, project management, as well as other related responsibilities.

Examples of duties that may be assigned to interns include processing data through the city’s GIS- based tree data management system, reviewing and processing permit applications, developing and supervising tree planting initiatives, conducting public outreach and education, providing technical expertise, completing field work and assessments, Urban Forestry Management Plan implementation, and other duties as assigned.

With assistance from city staff and resources, this role will be expected to achieve International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) arborist certification before the term ends.
