DEFINITION
Develop, organize, and implement delivery of recreation and social services to the citizens of Danville in accordance with program objectives set forth by the Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department. Perform professional duties in Community Centers, Village Theatre and Art Gallery, and/or Teen Centers, as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from a Program Supervisor. Exercises supervision over Program Assistants and other program personnel, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Plan, implement and evaluate programs, events and services.
- Assist in recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating part-time personnel and volunteers.
- Conduct and attend a variety of training seminars, staff meetings, and community meetings.
- Recruit and orient contractual instructors and develop and monitor contractual service agreements.
- Prepare memos, correspondence, reports and public information in a variety of forms.
- Represent the Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department and Town to citizens, advisory bodies and community organizations and serve in a liaison role, as assigned.
- Conduct outreach activities and interpret Town policies to the public.
- Maintain accurate records and compile program information and other data.
- Assist in monitoring facilities and equipment.
- Prepare and monitor program operating and revenue budgets; monitor expenditures and payroll in accordance with established procedures.
- Assume additional responsibilities in the absence of the Program Supervisor, as needed.
Specific to Youth/Teen Services:
Program Coordinator will be responsible for implementing a variety of recreational, social and educational programs and services for youth, ages preschool through high school. Work closely with the Town's Police Services Department, School District, community and human services agencies. Motivate and facilitate various youth groups.
Specific to Sports & Fitness and Facility Management
Responsible for the development and implementation of sports programming, including aquatics, and organizing a variety of recreational sports leagues for youth and adults. Work closely with the school district. Supervises seasonal Aquatics program to include staff training and in-services. Requires a basic understanding of sports terminology, concepts, and rules. Responsible for sports & fitness fee classes offered in the Danville Activity Guide. Support facility management through facility rentals.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of recreation programming.
- Human development as it relates to planning recreation and leisure programs and activities for the public.
- Leadership, group dynamics, and facilitation concepts and techniques.
- Safety practices as related to the assigned program/activity area.
Ability to:
- Develop, implement and evaluate innovative programs effectively.
- Supervise and motivate participants, part-time personnel and volunteers.
- Communicate effectively with Town officials, the public, and the media.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
- Monitor program budget.
- Work flexible hours, including nights and/or weekends, as needed.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two (2) years full-time or four (4) years part-time related professional experience in public recreation or any equivalent combination of education or experience. Background in municipal parks and recreation is preferred. Supervision of part-time and/or volunteer personnel is desirable.
Education:
A Bachelor's degree in recreation administration, public administration, or closely related field.
LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATION(S)
Possession of a valid California State Driver's License, or license in another state with the ability to obtain a California license within 30 days of hire. First Aid and CPR certification is required but may be obtained during probationary period.
