The City of Patterson’s Public Works Department is seeking to fill (1) one part-time Maintenance Worker I position and to establish an Eligibility List.  In this entry level class in the Public Works Maintenance Worker series, employees are trained and learn to become gradually more independent in, performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the repair, maintenance, construction, landscaping and cleanup of public works, parks and city facilities and services.  Duties include but are not limited to assist with digging out, breaking up and hauling away damaged sidewalks, gutters, curbs, and asphalt pavements; assist with painting street signs, crossings, crosswalks, curbs and centerlines; assist in repairing or installing landscape irrigation systems; learn to trim, prune, and remove landscaping and shrubbery; learn to operate a variety of trucks and equipment, including dump trucks, vactor trucks, rollers, front-end loaders, backhoe, tractors, air hammers, pavement breakers, lawn mowers, and other turf equipment; performs related duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list that may be used to fill future vacancies in the City's Urban Forestry, Parks, Streets, Collections, and Building Maintenance divisions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with major courses in business administration, public administration, or a closely related field, and four (4) years of experience with management and supervisory responsibility for revenue collection functions or business facility management and development. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year-for-year basis.

Other requirements include the ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, the incumbent must maintain a valid California Class C or higher driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Certification as an Administrator of Public Parking (CAPP) by the International Parking Institute highly desirable. 

In addition to the qualifications above, our ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of parking meter systems, technology, and policies; skills related to operational, strategic, and contract management; and experience in municipal and community engagement.

Glenn County is recruiting individuals to fill three full time and multiple Part Time/ Extra Help positions in the Public Works Agency. The Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II/III position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of County roads, bridges, and other related structures, and in various traffic control maintenance and  repair activities of the Public Works Agency; operates a variety of construction, maintenance and transportation equipment as necessary to complete daily tasks at the Glenn County Public Works Agency. The Public Works Maintenance Worker III position is the journey-level class in the series, and is distinguished from the Public Works Maintenance Worker II by the primary responsibility to operate heavy diesel and gasoline-powered construction equipment in the maintenance of roadways, drainage systems. 
 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Prepares roads for patch repairs, overlays, or chip seals; prepares mix for patching roads; repairs and reconstructs roads.
• Cleans roadsides and drainage systems; inspects and clears debris from drainage systems; conducts roadside burning as needed.

DEFINITION

Under direction, to perform beginning level civil engineering work of average difficulty in the field and office in connection with the surveying, design and construction of public works projects, and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists in the drafting and preparation of designs, plans and specifications relating to the construction of streets, storm drains, water systems, sanitary sewer systems, structures, traffic control systems, and other public works projects; prepares applications for permits; supervises subordinate personnel; prepares quantity and cost estimates; performs routine land survey and construction inspection work; reduces field survey notes; makes engineering calculations; prepares inspection reports; measures construction quantities; studies flow of traffic for street design purposes; draws diagrams; prepares and interprets legal descriptions for property acquisition; answers questions presented by the general public regarding office activities and routine engineering matters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Modern civil engineering theory and methods, to include nomenclature and instruments used in engineering office and field work; structural design and layout, basic principles of physics, chemistry, advance mathematics as applied to practical civil engineering work; computer-aided drafting and design; and computer software for spreadsheets and word processing.

Ability to: Learn all aspects of municipal and state laws which pertain to local contracts and plan specifications; learn modern construction methods; write concise technical reports; use drafting, computer aided drafting and surveying instruments; supervise field and office personnel; prepare, read, and interpret survey notes, engineering specifications, construction plans, and legal property descriptions; make difficult engineering computations; understand and carry out technical instructions; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education: Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent or possession of an Engineer-in-Training Certificate from the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
