The Position

What You’ll Do

The Librarian I/II performs a variety of professional librarian duties in the activities of the library including reference, cataloging, interlibrary loans, collection development, programming and outreach for children's or adult services; and other related work as required. The current vacancy may be filled at either level based on experience. Depending upon class level and assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

• Advise and assist library patrons; demonstrate the use of on-line library catalogs, databases and other user aids; refer patrons to other appropriate agencies if appropriate.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in such areas as children, adult, and others using various themes and technologies; recommend program and procedure changes.
• Perform outreach to the community, community organizations, and schools within established design and framework.
• Serve on materials selection committee for the library; select and deselect materials for assigned area; evaluate and remove materials from the collection.
• Serve at a reference desk; research and respond to difficult or technical reference questions.
• Attend and represent the library at professional meetings as required.
• Supervise and train assigned staff.
• Compile library activity reports and statistics related to assignment.
• Participate in department meetings and continuing education programs as appropriate.
• Respond to citizen complaints and requests.
• Design and implement special ongoing programs, services and events.
• Assist in preparing and monitoring budget and grant programs.
• Develop, implement, and monitor training programs.
• Design and analyze statistical reports.
• Administer grant projects.

The Librarian I/II receives direction from the Supervising Librarian overseeing the division or other higher level personnel. The Librarian II may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower-level library personnel.

Applications are being accepted for the position of Engineering Intern with the City of South San Francisco’s Public Works Department - Engineering Division. This is a non-benefited, part-time hourly/temporary position.

THE POSITION

Under supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office work to assist the Public Works Engineering Division teams on programs and projects that may include engineering permits, land development plan checks, procedural and standards research and development, record and asset management, traffic research and field crew assistance.
 

IDEAL CANDIDATE SECTION

The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in basic engineering principles and demonstrate proficiency in modern drafting and design practices. They should be familiar with engineering office tools and computer-aided drafting software such as AutoCAD, as well as design and GIS mapping systems.

We are seeking someone who is detail-oriented, highly organized, adaptable, and self-motivated, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.

The ideal candidate will have willingness to learn about construction management and inspection procedures and the ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations and drafting work. They should be capable of collecting and recording engineering field data with a high level of detail and maintaining thorough documentation. Proficiency in modern office software tools, including PowerPoint, to create professional presentations is essential. The candidate must be able to prepare clear and concise written correspondence, including responses to public inquiries, and demonstrate the ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with contractors and the public are important. Flexibility to work varied hours as needed to meet project demands is also required.

• Performs a wide variety of responsible sub-professional engineering work including assisting engineering staff with general clerical, administrative, and technical tasks for public works projects
• Performs electronic document filing, enters data and creates reports in various software applications
• Conducts internet research and research of engineering record archives
• Processes permits and reviews land development plans
• Assists with Traffic Advisory Committee tasks
• Assists with internal and external communications and public outreach
• Learns to assist with engineering plan reviews and traffic control plans

Education: Current student enrolled in a university/college pursuing an undergraduate degree (Junior or Senior) or graduate degree in Engineering, preferably in Civil Engineering.

What You’ll Do

The Engineering Technician I/II performs a variety of technical drafting, office and field engineering work. The position receives immediate supervision from higher engineering personnel.

The Engineering Technician I/II position is flexibly staffed based on experience and may be filled at either level. Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Locate utilities, easements, property lines and other information on plans.
• Prepare topographical plan and profile maps of property and pertinent features from survey notes and legal descriptions.
• Check parcel maps, subdivisions and various other drawings.
• Participate in the preparation, filing, and retrieval of a variety of engineering maps, documents and records.
• Ink, pencil, trace and letter charts, graphs, maps, plans and other drawings; prepare miscellaneous illustrative materials such as charts and graphs on blueprint machine; monitor blueprint machine and blueprint paper supply.
• Prepare final drawings of existing improvements, rights-of-way, and other utilities using field notes, maps and photographs; check calculations used in designs and estimates.
• Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with workflow processes.
• Assist in measuring accurate distances to be used in the determination of locations of boundaries, easements, improvements, structures and topographic features; keep notes on measurements made.
• Write technical specifications for various maintenance contracts; inspect work on maintenance contracts; verify quantities for payment on maintenance contracts.
• Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning engineering activities; issue permits and accept permit fees over the counter; answer questions related to maintenance projects as applicable.
• Make and check mathematical calculations related to surveying and basic engineering.
• Inspect streets, sidewalks, sewers, drains and other public works areas for maintenance needs; prepare cost estimates of labor, materials equipment necessary for maintenance projects; assist in developing work schedules.
• Prepare and maintain production and related records regarding maintenance activities.
• Maintain various technical files and departmental logs.
• Manage and respond to resident service requests.

THE POSITION

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The City of San Rafael Public Works Department is seeking a full-time Associate Civil Engineer to lead a variety of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects related to Buildings/Facilities, Parks, Storm Drain, and Transportation.

The Ideal Candidate will possess expertise in municipal engineering and have strong critical thinking, communication and organizational skills that allow them to effectively manage all phases of multiple capital programs and/or projects. They will have a strong sense of customer service and the ability to provide recommended solutions to complex engineering and service challenges. They may serve as a supervisor to a small group of engineers and/or paraprofessional engineering staff. The successful candidate will support the CIP Division by effectively and efficiently delivering the design and construction of various capital improvements while collaborating with other DPW divisions and City departments. • Develops Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) and participate with other department staff in the selection of consulting engineers.
• Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates pertaining to construction projects.

• Review plans and maps submitted by private developers for conformity with laws, ordinances, City imposed requirements and accepted professional standards with the goal of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the community. Performs certain administrative duties associated with private development approvals such as preparing agreements, collecting fees, obtaining dedications, and coordinating with other agencies and City departments.
• Investigates field problems affecting the public, property owners, contractors and maintenance operations; collects the necessary data or assigns the collection of data to technical personnel; develops recommendations and meets with the appropriate parties to discuss and implement recommendations.
• Provides engineering information, including City requirements related to property improvements, to the public and other City departments. Arranges and participates in conferences with other engineers, developers and the general public on engineering problems.
• Assigns investigation, design and drafting tasks to subordinates, reviews completed work and assists in the developing solutions to difficult problems. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The Associate Civil Engineer is the journey level classification in the engineering job class series. This job class requires:

• Registration as a licensed Civil Engineer in the state of California and 4 years of responsible post degree engineering experience (a master’s degree shall count for 1 year of post degree engineering experience).
• A valid drivers’ license 

Under direction, an Associate Civil Engineer performs difficult and complex engineering work and may serve as a supervisor to a small group of engineers and/or paraprofessional engineering staff. The position calls for a high degree of initiative, technical proficiency, and judgement.

BENEFITS

This position is a regular position of the City’s Western Council of Engineers (WCE) employee group and is eligible to receive benefits including but not limited to:

• MEDICAL | City group health coverage, with the City paying a fixed dollar amount toward the cost of the monthly insurance premium. Employee only: $950.00; Employee plus one: $1,900.00; Family: $2,400.00
• DENTAL | Premium fully paid for employee plus eligible dependents.
• VISION | Premium fully paid for employee.
• VACATION LEAVE | 10 days annually, increases after 3 years of service
• SICK LEAVE | 12 days annually
• HOLIDAYS | 12 paid City holidays plus 1 floating holiday per year
• COMPENSATORY TIME option
• BEREAVEMENT LEAVE | Up to 5 days paid leave
• END OF LIFE CARE LEAVE | Up to 80 hours paid leave
• PAID PARENTAL LEAVE (if eligible) | Up to 300 hours paid leave. WCE employees also contribute to State Disability Insurance (SDI)
• LIFE INSURANCE & AD&D | $5,000 Life Insurance and a $5,000 AD&D benefit
• LONG TERM DISABILITY | 66.67% of salary, up to $1,000 per month
• RETIREMENT | Enrollment in the Marin County Retirement System (MCERA) pension plan, a defined benefit retirement program
  • Tier 2 - hired on or after 7/1/2011: 2% @ 55, Average of 3 highest years
  • Tier 3 PEPRA - hired on or after 1/1/2013: 2% @ 62, Average of 3 highest years
• DEFERRED COMPENSATION | City will contribute one percent (1.06%) of base pay into a City-provided deferred compensation plan
• GYM MEMBERSHIP REIMBURSEMENT | Up to $198 per year
• BILINGUAL PAY (if eligible) | Up to $250 per month
