Position Summary

 

Under direction, perform varied professional and electrical engineering work at an advanced level of difficulty in the field and office. Perform assessments of and prepare written reports documenting the existing electrical systems and loads at existing facilities. Work with other engineers and technicians on design of new facilities and rehabilitation/retrofit of existing facilities. May supervise subordinate engineering personnel engaged in design and construction work. May act as resident engineer on major capital improvement projects and as oversight engineer on in-house maintenance and repair projects. Interpret, explain and carry out electrical engineering design, inspection and construction methods and procedures. Responsibilities include regular contact with other professional engineering personnel, as well as contractors and their representatives, and the general public, obtaining and providing technical electrical engineering data and information, preparing, checking and reviewing detailed and complex electrical engineering plans, specifications and related reports. Perform related duties as required.

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

• Performs assessments of electrical systems and prepare written reports documenting the capacity and limitations of the systems
• Performs detailed engineering calculations and analysis in connection with electrical design of utility systems for transportation facilities 
• Prepares and supervises the preparation of detailed electrical engineering designs, drawings, specifications, cost estimates and quantity estimates for a wide range of electrical construction and maintenance projects
• Works with other in-house and consultant engineering professionals and technicians to develop, prepare and finalize complete sets of construction bid documents for capital improvement and other construction projects 
• Reviews consultants submittals and work products to ensure compliance with required scope of work and deliverables 
• Reviews contractors' work to ensure compliance with plans and specifications
• Plans, schedules and coordinates detailed phases of engineering work either as part of a major project or for an entire project of smaller scope
• Makes investigations of contractual and construction problems that may arise on construction projects
• Inspects and supervises a wide variety of ordinary and complex construction projects to ensure compliance with contract plans and specifications
• Assists in the preparation of complex contract documents
• Conducts correspondence and prepare technical engineering reports in connection with a wide variety of projects

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education and/or Experience: 

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
• Five years position-related electrical engineering experience, including design, estimate and specification preparation and the inspection of construction work
• One-year supervisory experience is desirable

 

Required Licenses:  

• Registration (P.E. license) as an Electrical Engineer in the state of California. Must have a PE license as an Electrical Engineer for at least 5 years. 
• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record. No reckless driving and DUI infractions within the last 7 years. No more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years. May operate District vehicles.

 

Physical Requirement: 

• Must inspect construction work on the Golden Gate Bridge, other structures and buildings, climb scaffolds, catwalks and ladders
• Carry test, inspection and electrical equipment that may weigh up to 50 pounds

The Information Technology Department is seeking a Usability and Accessibility Senior Analyst to be part of the City’s two-year program to expand San José 311 feature development, customer experience, and geographic equity. The Community Energy Department is seeking an Associate Electrical Engineer to support an emerging program which is intended to increase the City’s overall energy resiliency.  This newly formed Associate Electrical Engineer position will collaborate with staff from other departments, consultants, vendors, private developers, and other partners to identify, assess, develop and deliver innovative energy resiliency projects, including participating in the potential development of a City utility to provide electric distribution service to a large development project.

The Associate Electrical Engineer will perform a diverse set of professional electrical engineering-related assignments which are primarily focused on the engineering, design, and implementation of electric distribution microgrids, distributed energy resources, and other electrical projects within new residential, commercial and other land-use developments, as well as City-owned facilities.  The person selected will have knowledge and experience related to the design, construction and operation of high voltage electric transmission and distribution systems, building and other facility electrical systems, and renewable energy generation and storage solutions.  Knowledge and experience related to the design and operation of component-level or integrated electronic circuitry is not applicable to this position.

Knowledge and experience in the following specific areas is directly relevant to this Associate Electrical Engineer position: Experience in electrical power system and microgrid design, including transmission, distribution, generation and storage. The City of San José’s Information Technology Department is seeking a Senior SharePoint Administrator responsible for design and implementation of Microsoft's collaboration platform within organization. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical experience to design and provide sophisticated solutions utilizing Microsoft SharePoint platform, ensure SharePoint deployment, and support services delivery at an enterprise level.  

Duties may include but are not limited to: 

• Developing strategy, roadmap, and feature enhancements for a City-wide enterprise content management and records management solution.  
• Defining Physical Architecture, Logical Architecture, and Capacity Planning and making sure the environment is scalable. 
• Developing site Information Architecture plan and administering best practices and governance procedures for SharePoint Online sites. 
• Defining the Information Architecture and Taxonomy and clearly defining Taxonomy Term Store for the whole Enterprise. 
• Implementing best practices and Governance procedures for SharePoint custom solutions.

Effective 7/1/2020, the pay range for this classification is $96,470.50 to $122,137.60.

The actual salary will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. In addition to the starting salary, employees in the Associate Engineer classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay.

The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is seeking to fill four (4) Associate Engineer positions in the Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP). The Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) Development Division contributes to the Department’s mission through its primary focus on key areas of responsibility that include; public education and outreach services, investigation of fires to determine cause and origin, and code compliance activities such as plan review and inspection.

Under the general supervision of a Senior Engineer, the Associate Engineer position performs a variety of professional engineering, plan review, and inspection work.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to the following:

- Examine plans, perform calculations and review specifications for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings for compliance with the California Building Code, California Fire Code, California State Fire Marshal regulations, and
applicable NFPA standards and local ordinances.

- Provide technical advice to consultants, architects, engineers, contractors, developers, department officers and staff, and the Fire Marshal on the application or interpretation of fire safety codes/regulations, and on the resolution of fire safety issues found in the preliminary design of buildings.

- Analyze and evaluate proposals for alternate materials, methods of construction, and/or variances to fire safety codes and regulations.

- Conduct field inspections to ensure that the finished construction complies with approved plans.

The subject of the incumbent’s tasks will be focused on one or more of the following Sections of BFP areas: Building Life Safety Systems, Fire Suppression Systems, Fire Detection/Fire Alarm Systems, Hazardous Materials and Site Development.
