Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Ferry Mechanic performs preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair, and modifications on structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, piping and control systems found on ferry vessels and passenger terminals; performs related work as assigned. Responsibilities include record keeping and written verification of work accomplished.
 

Essential Responsibilities

• Working with computers on a daily basis for work scheduling, work order entry and work order reporting on the Districts electronic maintenance system in addition to notifications and communications.
• Conducts tests, analyses and measurements as directed to diagnose any unusual, erratic or malfunctioning occurrence in any shipboard or terminal system or component.
• Reports any unusual wear patterns, noise, pressure, temperature, or changes in voltage, current, cycles, resistance or any other indication of potential malfunction.
• References manufacturer schematics including blueprints, drawings and specifications to resolve maintenance issues.
• References parts catalogues and other sources to determine correct parts for specific applications.
• Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs and overhauls as directed.
• Documents and records work performed and parts and materials used in the electronic maintenance system. 
• Reports all safety hazards and corrects unsafe situations immediately where possible.
• Immediately reports to supervisor any potential maintenance problem or condition which could cause a possible schedule delay.
• Maintains all work areas, special tools and equipment used in performing maintenance function, in a clean and orderly manner.
• Operate a forklift and other equipment/vehicles safely.
• Interacts on a regular basis with vessel operations personnel.
• Adheres to the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to job.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service. 
• Performs additional related duties as assigned.
• Regular and reliable attendance and performance required. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

• Completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program, or approved equivalent as a heavy equipment or marine mechanic OR four (4) years of progressively responsible journey level full-time work experience performing to the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment which should include mechanical, electrical or welding repair, and at least one year in an industrial environment.
• Experience in corrective and preventative maintenance records using a computer-based maintenance management information system
• Experience in utilizing MS Windows based software for data entry, work order processing and materials requisitioning

Required License:  

• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record (Operates District Vehicles).
• No DUI’s or Reckless Driving codes within the last 7 years. 
• No more than two moving violations within the last 3 years.

Required Tools:

• Must have a full set of journey level hand tools to accomplish assigned work.

Hours:

• Shifts are scheduled based on seniority.
• The Ferry Maintenance Department operates 7 days per week, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s day.
• Must be available to work all shifts; some overtime maybe required to handle emergencies.

Physical Requirement:  

Requires frequent and extensive physical activities such as: lifting and manipulating up to 50 lbs., bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, climbing, gripping, and other movements related to essential duties. Work around fumes, odors and dust in an occasionally high noise level environment with appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. Ability to wear a respirator and be fit tested. Must wear hearing protections when performing certain duties.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:  

• Occupational health and safety rules and working practices applicable to this position. 
• Monitoring and inspection of propulsion and auxiliary machinery and other supporting systems (i.e., electrical, plumbing, electronics, hydraulics and HVAC in a commercial application.
• Maintenance and troubleshooting principles and best practices.

Skill in or Ability to:

• Understand, read and communicate (both orally and in writing) in Standard English.
• Interpreting and applying oral and written instructions in a consistent manner.
• Reading and reasoning skills to aid in troubleshooting equipment, understanding manufacture and engineering schematics and system drawings.
• Maintain corrective and preventative maintenance records using a computer-based maintenance management information system.
• Perform tasks with limited direction, and minimal supervision.
• Demonstrate ability to make logical decisions and sound judgments using common sense.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Machine shop fabrication skills, familiar with lathe and mill use for the purpose of modification and fabrication of components.
• Welding, steel and aluminum, in shop setting and on-site.
• Electrical/electronic systems, motor controllers, power distribution, PLCs, and ability to troubleshoot the same.
• Off-highway and/or marine diesel engine operation and maintenance

The City of Foster City is recruiting for a part-time Public Works Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department. The is a part-time non-benefited position working approximately 20 hours per week, and no benefits are provided. 

Important and Essential Responsibilities 
Operates hand and power tools, light and heavy construction equipment and specialized wastewater equipment. Handles and applies chemicals. Maintains, operates, inspects, repairs and installs water distribution system facilities including piping, storage tanks, meters, hydrants, valves, pressure reducing stations, pumping stations, pumps, controls, measuring devices, cathodic protection systems, communication systems, and related appurtenances.

Education and Training Guidelines: 
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:

Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance or construction; completion of high school or the equivalent. 

Experience: One year of experience in general maintenance or construction. 

Licenses, Certificates, Registration: 

• Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver’s License and maintain license and a good driving record.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. 

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner.

THE POSITION

Perform professional civil engineering work in the planning, design, technical investigation, and construction of projects in public works, transportation, capital improvements, and structural engineering. An example of duties include:

• Participates in the preparation of plans and specifications for the construction of streets, storm drains, street lighting, traffic signals, buildings and related public works and City building projects; researches project design requirements; performs calculations and prepares estimates of material costs and time considerations.
• Researches publications and industry information sources.
• Develops and revises design and construction standards.
• Participates in the implementation of the City’s traffic and transportation engineering programs; prepares and revises plans and specifications for traffic related projects; prepares special studies and reports and coordinates major projects.
• Investigates field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations.
• Prepares estimates and feasibility reports for new or modified services and structures.
• Administers contracts and may assist with inspection services and project management for construction and maintenance projects.
• Participates in the plan check, review and processing of plans for private developments affecting streets, sewers, drains and related public works facilities and ensures that they meet all City imposed requirements.
• Prepares special engineering studies and reports.
• Coordinates planning, design, and construction activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections, and with outside agencies.
• Attends various staff and regional technical advisory meetings.
• Provides technical and professional assistance/support to other City departments and divisions, Planning Commission, and City Council as necessary.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in civil engineering or a closely related field;

OR

Possession of a current Engineer-in-Training Certificate, issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, and one (1) year of professional civil engineering experience.

License Requirements:

What You'll Do

The Public Works Department is responsible for the City's major capital projects and infrastructure including streets, sidewalks, streetlights, traffic signals, sewer and storm conveyance systems, and pump stations.  The Department is also responsible for the efficient management of the City's traffic operations and review of right-of-way impacts associated with private developments.

Transportation is and continues to be of importance to our Department and the community.  Traffic congestion plagues many of the peninsula cities.  Belmont has taken a proactive approach by continuously looking for transportation improvements, such as roundabout design, multimodal enhancements, and an adaptive signal operation system on our main East-West connection, Ralston Avenue.  Another pivotal project is the development of a citywide Transportation Master Plan, to help guide the City for its future growth.

Private development has grown significantly in the City the last 5 years, including biolife sciences, housing, and mixed-use developments.  Most notable are the Conceptual Development Plan and Development for the Belmont Stanford Campus at Notre Dame de Namur University and the Annexation of the Harbor Industrial Area from the County of San Mateo.

This invitation is focused on recruiting a Senior Engineer for private development and permitting services.  Key assignments include leading staff and managing consultants and contractors through the private development process, as well as managing the permitting services.  However, the Senior Engineer may be assigned to work in any of the work areas mentioned above.

In addition, the Senior Engineer assists in preparing and monitoring operating budgets in connection with assigned programs and contract management.  Effective communication skills and the ability to recognize the interconnectedness of the various civil disciplines and stakeholders are critical to the success of this position.  This position is public-facing and may be needed in planning commissions and city council meetings.  This position involves direct supervision of a growing team of 3-4 staff members, which may include engineers, engineering technicians, and contract staff.

Generally, the Senior Civil Engineer supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for performing professional and technical engineering services in the design and management of public works capital improvement projects, private development, permitting and other services, ensuring high work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned.  Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including management of the most complex engineering projects or exercising lead direction over lower-level staff.  Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.

The responsibilities and duties of the Senior Civil Engineer may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing professional engineering services in the design and management of public works capital improvement projects.
• Establish schedules and methods for providing engineering services, identify resource needs, review needs with appropriate management staff, and allocate resources accordingly.
• Participate in the development of policies and procedures, monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures, and make recommendations for changes and improvement to existing standards and procedures.
• Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives and implement approved policies and procedures.
• Perform the more technical and complex tasks of the work unit, including management and administration of construction and professional services contracts.
• Supervise and participate in the work of lower-level engineering staff in the preparation of project plans, specification, cost estimates, and contract administration for capital projects.
• Supervise and participate in the inspection of capital projects, ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations and provide resolutions to construction problems.
• Prepare and/or review professional civil engineering designs for assigned projects utilizing a variety of computer software programs, perform detailed calculations and computations, and prepare and/or review the adequacy and accuracy of computations, preliminary layouts, and design work from field and survey data.
• Review and approve changes to approved plans and specifications and process a variety of permits.
• Exercise professional engineering judgment in accordance with current accepted practice of civil engineering and appropriate laws and codes.
• Participate in the selection of technical engineering staff, provide or coordinate staff training, work with employees to correct deficiencies, and implement discipline procedures.
• Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned engineering program budget, submit budget recommendations and monitor expenditures.

THE POSITION

The City of Rocklin is looking for two Maintenance Workers to assist in the Parks Division of the Parks and Recreation Department. The Maintenance Worker is a temporary position and incumbents work on an as-needed basis, not to exceed 28 hours per week and up to 999 hours per fiscal year. Temporary employment does not provide any guarantee of continued employment and the City of Rocklin may end the assignment at any time. Temporary employees are not eligible for any other benefits except where required by law, and there is no guarantee of future permanent employment.

An example of duties are:

• Performs flood control measures by clearing creeks of obstructions, keeping drains clean and clear, and preparing sandbags in case of emergency.
• Performs crack sealing of asphalt, and backfilling trenches and excavations on City streets; performs repair, maintenance, and construction of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
• Removes concrete, builds forms, pours concrete, and performs other concrete work around City buildings as required.
• Empties trash cans, picks up and removes debris, litter, and trash from parks, athletic fields, trails, and landscaped areas throughout the City; removes graffiti and other unwanted markings from City-owned property.
• Plants, mows, prunes, and maintains turf, trees, shrubs, and plants; clears sites of weeds.
• Performs construction and repair of landscapes and other park facilities such as installing and maintaining signs, installing park structures, and installing and maintaining fences.
• Paints or stains and pressure washes and cleans park amenities and fencing.
• May apply pesticide, herbicide and other pest management treatments to vegetation and landscaped areas.
• Makes minor adjustments on service equipment; maintains tools and equipment in working order.
• Operates trucks, trailers, and other automotive equipment as required.
• Maintains logs of daily activities.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Equivalent to graduation from high school

Definition
Under general supervision, the Senior Land Surveyor supervises and coordinates the activities of field and office surveying functions and assists the Survey and Mapping Manager with supervisory and administrative functions of the Survey Services Unit.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a single position classification responsible for assisting the Survey and Mapping Manager in supervising the efforts of subordinate personnel including surveyors, engineering technicians, and consultants. The Senior Land Surveyor can be assigned to any of the following areas: supervision of survey activities in the field for design and construction projects, supervision of office surveying functions such as mapping, writing legal descriptions, and production of accurate calculations used for engineering, real estate and construction activities.

This classification requires that the incumbent be licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of California or equivalent and possess specialized knowledge of land surveying techniques and construction surveying, with emphasis on technology such as GPS (Global Positioning System) methodology and instrumentation. This position will supervise professional and/or administrative staff, as well as identify the need for establishing and administering consultant contracts. This position works with other public agencies (e.g., Caltrans, local cities and counties, water district) to establish property exchanges and rights of way for transportation improvements.

Essential Job Functions

Typical Tasks

Minimum Qualifications

Employment Standards
Sufficient training, education, and experience to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Development of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is typically obtained through training and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in surveying science, engineering or a related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of technical surveying experience, at least three (3) years of which must have been in a position comparable to that of a field surveying Chief of Party and/or office surveying "Lead" Land Surveyor. Directly related experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of California or equivalent is required at the time of appointment.

DEFINITION

Under direction, to supervise and perform a wide variety of responsible professional engineering work in connection with the preparation of designs, plans, and specifications for a variety of public works projects, and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Prepare, review, and check preliminary and final engineering designs, plans, specifications and cost estimates relating to the construction of streets, storm drains, water systems, sanitary sewer systems, structures, traffic control systems, and other public works projects; perform detailed checking of subdivision construction plans; perform survey and construction inspection work as required; prepare drawings and other documents relating to right of way acquisition; prepare technical reports on such matters as traffic flow, street deficiencies, storm drainage requirements, structural failures, water system requirements, sanitary sewer system requirements and related projects; may act in capacity of Resident Engineer of construction projects; supervise subordinate engineering personnel; establish and maintain satisfactory employee and public relations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Modern civil engineering principles, methods and practices, including stress analysis, hydraulics, hydrology, pavement design, traffic engineering, computer-aided drafting and mapping, surveying, technical report writing; the elements of effective supervision.

Ability to: Apply fundamental engineering principles to solving practical problems encountered in the design and construction of streets, storm drains, water systems, sanitary sewer systems, traffic control systems, structures and other public work projects; prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for contract documents; prepare engineering computations and technical reports; understand and carry out technical instructions and prepare staff analysis on assigned projects; make independent decisions on technical problems; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education: Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent.

Experience: Two years of experience in civil engineering work at the level of a City of Daly City Engineer I.

License: Registration as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering in the State of California is required. Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License.

Under the general supervision of a Senior Engineer, the Associate Engineer position performs a variety of professional engineering, plan review, and inspection work.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Maintenance Worker I:  This is the entry level class in the maintenance worker series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled maintenance tasks. Although trucks and other motorized equipment may be operated by a Maintenance Worker I, the equipment is used on a training basis or for tasks which are repetitious in nature. Under this training concept, positions assigned to the class of Maintenance Worker II which become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Maintenance Worker I level, with the understanding that reassignment to the Maintenance Worker II class may be expected following successful job performance and personal development.

Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level in the maintenance worker series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform semi‑skilled and skilled public works maintenance activities and to operate light and moderately heavy power‑driven equipment on a continuing basis. All positions allocated to this class require that an incumbent be able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative to fulfill assigned tasks. Maintenance Workers II may also be expected to assist in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel.
