The Town of Atherton is approximately five square miles. The City is located in the San Francisco Peninsula in Southern San Mateo County. Atherton is a small, rural, and residential community, with no industrial land-use base. Native trees cover the five miles of town. Atherton’s current population is 7,133 according to the California Census in 2020.       

The Town of Atherton invites you to apply for the position of Police Sergeant. This is an internal and external opportunity. Under the general supervision of the Police Commander, the Police Sergeant plans, schedules, deploys, trains, supervises, and reviews the work of Police Officers and civilian staff.  The Sergeant performs a wide range of patrol and related duties in the prevention of crime, maintenance of public order, protection of life and property, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances.  As part of the Management Team, the Sergeant assists in the preparation of collision investigations and criminal cases, provides courtroom testimony, serves in specialized organizational roles, and assists with various administrative functions. 

A letter of interest and current resume is required. All submissions will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training, and other job-related qualifications.. An extensive background includes a polygraph examination and/or voice stress analysis, completion of the POST Personal History Statement along with medical and psychological exams if selected.

Those selected to participate in the competitive process will be provided with the details of the testing process, which has been tentatively scheduled for the week of August 26, 2024.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

• Completion of an associate degree and 4 years’ experience as a sworn Police Officer.
• Must have applied for the Intermediate P.O.S.T. Certificate.
• Highly desirable qualifications may include: an Advanced or Supervisory Certificate from P.O.S.T.; bachelor’s degree and/or completion of the Supervisors’ Leadership Institute (SLI) Course.

To excel as a Police Sergeant, you need a comprehensive blend of knowledge, skills and experience.  A thorough understanding of law enforcement protocols, including arrest procedures, search and seizure laws, use of force policies, and evidence handling, is essential for ensuring officers operate within legal boundaries. Familiarize yourself with our department's policies, regulations, and standard operating procedures. This includes administrative procedures, disciplinary protocols, and codes of conduct. As a sergeant, you'll be responsible for leading and managing a team of officers. Knowledge of leadership theories, personnel management, conflict resolution techniques, and performance evaluation methods will help you effectively supervise and motivate your team. Understanding community policing concepts and strategies is crucial for building positive relationships with community members, addressing local concerns, and implementing proactive crime prevention initiatives. Stay updated on legal developments and ethical standards relevant to law enforcement. This includes constitutional rights, case law precedents, ethical dilemmas, and the ethical responsibilities of police officers. Effective communication is vital for a police sergeant. Have strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly, resolve conflicts, and interact professionally with colleagues, community members, and stakeholders. Have the ability to assess risks, evaluate options, and make informed decisions in high-pressure situations. This includes critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to weigh potential consequences effectively.

To perform a wide variety of general clerical and administrative duties for a City department; and assist the public.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Public Works Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate for this position must be a “team player” with excellent customer service skills.  Candidate must be able to learn the complex duties of public works quickly and work independently.  Candidate will be responsible for overseeing programs that affect public health and safety, as well as strict local, state and federal permit requirements.  The Ideal candidate must be detail oriented, organized, professional, and be able to manage their time efficiently and work well with both internal and external customers.  The Ideal candidate must also be able to learn new software on a regular basis and be able to articulate if there are issues with the new systems. 

WORK HOURS

This position will be required to work onsite during the hours of 7:00AM - 4:00PM (Monday through Friday). Regular and consistent attendance is a must.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Administrative Clerk II:  This is the journey level class in the series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance.

Provides excellent customer service; answer telephone and direct callers; receive visitors at a public counter and identify a variety of needs; provide information on department policies and procedures as appropriate; schedules appointments. Performs a wide variety of routine clerical work including filing, billing, checking and recording information on records, maintaining logs for assigned functions. Type, proofread and process a variety of complex and/or sensitive documents including general correspondence, memos, and charts from rough draft or verbal instruction. Enter and retrieve data from on-line or stand-alone computer systems; operate computer systems to generate reports and perform other automated processes. Work cooperatively with others. Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Gather information from individuals or reference sources to complete and process various forms, records and applications; compile routine information and data for statistical and financial reports as assigned. Receive, sort and distribute incoming and outgoing correspondence. Issue, receive, type and process various applications, permits and other forms. Accept payment of fees; maintain and process cash records, disburse petty cash funds, and perform related basic computations. Maintain records and process forms, such as time records, purchase requisitions and orders, and other specific to the organizational unit.  Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:  One (1) year of experience performing duties comparable to those of an Administrative Clerk I in the City of Woodland.

Licenses and Certifications:  Required upon hire, possession of a valid California driver’s license

The county prisoner population is made up of those who are sentenced to county jail, those serving state prison sentences in the county jail under AB109, and those who are pre-trial and who have not yet been sentenced. Ideal Candidate Service Office Assistants will have a minimum of one year of general clerical, office assistant, phone services, or computer experience. At least one election cycles worth of experience in Candidate Filing is preferred as well.
 
Critical Skills include the ability to prioritize work, coordinate several activities organize, and maintain accurate files and records, and understand and carry out oral and written directions. As an Office Assistant it is also integral to have a positive attitude and demonstrate good leadership to assist other members of the team and help ensure day to day operations run smoothly.
 
Office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. These positions may require weekend and evening work assignments. The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:  Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is equivalent to two years of general clerical or office support experience.

• Basic California election laws, regulations, and procedures.
• Basic inventory control methods and techniques.
• Office administrative practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of current office equipment.

THE POSITION

Rocklin Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties involved in the protection of life and property; perform traffic control and enforce state and local traffic regulations; perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement services and activities; and perform related duties as assigned. • Assumes responsibility for the preservation of the public peace and the protection of life and property by preventing crime and enforcing all laws.

• Coordinates and cooperates with outside agencies, other law enforcement agencies, and organizations to provide information or assistance as needed.
• Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
• Actively develops and fosters community partnerships and demonstrates integrity and professionalism within the organization and community.
• Represents the City and the department in a courteous, professional manner

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by 30 college-level semester units from a regionally accredited educational institution;

AND

Current employment as a full-time, sworn peace officer in a California POST participating law enforcement department or agency AND one (1) year of full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer in a California POST participating law enforcement department or agency;

OR

Current employment as a full-time, sworn peace officer in another state AND one (1) year of fulltime experience as a sworn law enforcement officer AND possess a Basic Course Waiver from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class C Driver License and a satisfactory driving record is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• Possession of a POST Basic Certificate or possession of a Basic Course Waiver from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Working Conditions

Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation.

Must be willing to work emergencies as well as evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Must meet physical, psychological, and background standards established by POST as well as ongoing peace officer requirements pursuant to federal, state, and local legislation. This classification requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment. This classification functions as a peace officer within the authority and limits of California Penal Code Sections 830.1(a) and 832.

Salary: $11,558 - $14,049 Monthly

$138,703 - $168,594 Annually

The Chief Building Official plans, organizes, oversees, coordinates, and reviews the work of professional, technical, and administrative staff performing difficult and complex support related to all programs and activities of the Building Division. In addition, this position administers Building Code activities; manages the effective use of the City's permit processing, plans examination, building inspection, and code compliance resources to improve organizational productivity and customer service. The incumbent will provide highly complex and responsible support to the Community and Economic Development Director and in areas of expertise; and perform related duties, as assigned.
