The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Supervising Transportation Engineer in the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department! In this role, you will serve as the City's technical expert in the traffic engineering field. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible professional traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Associate Transportation Engineer class.

Other requirements include:

• Possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or professional Civil Engineer. California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer is preferred.
• Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required.

THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Public Works Director, or designee, the Senior Civil Engineer will perform complex professional municipal engineering duties and will lead and control the activities of the Land Development Section and may be responsible for other areas of engineering (secondary duties) as assigned.  The incumbent will exercise a full range of supervisory authority and responsibilities over assigned professional engineering and technical personnel, who may, in turn, direct the work of others.  The Senior Civil Engineer will participate in departmental projects and tasks with the Planning, Building, and Maintenance staff and perform other work as assigned.  The Senior Civil Engineer may occasionally serve as the Acting City Engineer and will also be assigned to serve as the Engineering representative for several commissions.  

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Senior Civil Engineer receives general direction from the Public Works Director, or designee, and exercises direct supervision over professional and technical staff.  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Coordinate, supervise and perform responsible engineering work in connection with municipal public work projects; prepare and supervise the design of engineering plans and specifications for the construction of streets, storm drains, parks, signals and buildings and other improvements; gather data, make calculations, and recommend alternatives.
• As project engineer, perform design work including preparation of preliminary drawings, finished plans, specifications, and estimates.
• Inspect and supervise the checking of structure and/or subdivision plans for conformance to City standards; participate in the final inspection of capital improvement projects for compliance with City specifications; and prepare conditions for land use and development permits.
• Interpret the application of design criteria; check plans and specifications for accuracy of design and completeness; supervise right-of-way engineering work; review subdivision maps, improvement plans, and other engineering designs for compliance with City standards.
• Determine the need for materials, supplies and equipment, and prepare requisitions and requests. Prepare cost estimates for labor, equipment, and material to accomplish various maintenance projects.
• Administer the encroachment permit process, including issuance of permits and inspection of the work for compliance with City standards.
• Make presentations to the City Council, City Commissions, and various public agencies and community groups.
• Assist in budget preparation and administration. Supervise, train and evaluate professional and technical subordinates.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of engineering.

• Sign-on Bonus:  One-time $5,000 bonus.  $2,500 on hire and $2,500 after successful completion of 1 year probation. The bonus is subject to taxes and is not reportable to CalPERS.

Engineering Technician-Inspector -Limited Term Duration - 06/30/2025

The Town of Moraga is a small, family-oriented bedroom community offering a quiet semi-rural lifestyle within easy reach of big city amenities. Located 22 miles east of San Francisco and 10 miles from Oakland, Moraga offers a unique blend of residential areas, two shopping centers and open hillsides. Under general supervision, the Engineering Technician/Construction Inspector position provides a variety of paraprofessional engineering and transportation support; performs a variety of technical and administrative duties relating to the maintenance, plan check, engineering design, development of PS&Es, construction bidding, contract management, construction management, construction quality assurance, inspection, surveying, and ordinance enforcement regarding public infrastructure and private land development under public works review; receives, investigates, and responds to complaints; maintains and updates engineering maps, drawings, records, and files; and performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Incumbents will provide technical assistance and support to professional staff and construction inspection on encroachment permits, land development and construction projects. The Engineering Technician/Inspector class is distinguished from the Assistant Engineer by more routine tasks and duties received and by less independence with which to perform.

Working Conditions

Work is often performed in an outdoor construction environment with year-round exposure to varying weather conditions. Work is subject to construction site noise and environment including exposure to loud equipment and machinery. Parks Planning and Design Manager Class Specification

Under administrative direction, plans, organizes, manages, and directs the activities of the Landscape Architecture Division; serves as a key staff member in the administration, development, and implementation of policies, systems, and procedures to facilitate the implementation of the City’s Park Master Plan; oversees and directs the supervision and activities of citywide tree preservation and landscape development policies; and gives professional advice on landscape matters.

Class Characteristics 
This is a single position management classification reporting to the Community Services Director.  The incumbent has considerable latitude in the application of department policy as it relates to division activities and follows general guidelines or professional and administrative standards in accomplishing assignments; the incumbent is expected to identify policy issues and work with other staff to develop options and recommend solutions.  This classification is distinguished from the Senior Landscape Architect by the latter’s responsibility to manage the staff and activities of one or more sections of the Landscape Architecture Division.
