Deputy Fire Marshal
Salary Range: $6,750.00 to $13,383.33 Monthly
 

This position will report directly to the Fire Marshal. The Deputy Fire Marshal is an advanced level position. Duties include, but are not limited to reading, interpreting, and enforcing all State statutes and regulations under the authority of the State Fire Marshal (SFM), and all standards as adopted by SFM as well as UCDH policies. This position will act as a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas. This position will regularly lead projects of critical importance to the organization; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. May direct programs with organizational-wide impacts that include formulating strategies and administrating policies, policies, processes, and resources. In this position, the individual will perform detailed inspections of buildings under the authority of the UCDH Fire Marshal’s Office. Provide fire and life safety education to occupants. Analyze hazardous materials and functional use of space during construction plan review and validate post-occupancy use for compliance. This position may serve as State Fire Marshal (SFM) Designated Campus Fire Marshal (DCFM) for the UCDH Hospital and other UCDH medical¬ related facilities. Note, that SFM has the sole authority to approve a candidate as an SFM DCFM.

Additionally, persons in this position are expected to perform plan reviews, construction inspections, and existing building inspections, participate in the Incident Command System, and understand and apply Joint Commission and CMS requirements, NFPA Standards, and California Code of Regulations.

Required Qualifications

• OSFM Fire Inspector 2A- 2D training class series and/or ICC Building Code Certification.
• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License
• Five (5) years of experience in building, fire, or hazardous materials inspections.
• College education/training equivalent to a BS level in Fire Science, Construction, Chemistry, or similar related field.
• Experience working within “Authority Having Jurisdiction” for enforcement of regulations, or someone who has completed an apprenticeship (time/experience) and is fully educated/experienced in construction.

Preferred Qualifications 

• OSFM Certification as a Fire Inspector 2
• ICC Building Code Official Certification
• Hazardous Material Inspection experience.
• Experience in hospital inspections &/or construction.
• Thorough knowledge and skill in one or more of the following fields: Hazardous Materials Inspections, Laboratories, Hospital &/or Construction Inspections.
• Demonstrates excellent working knowledge of the California Health and Safety Code sections under the authority of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, California Code of Regulations Title 24, NFPA, and other standards required for Fire Prevention activities within the state of California.
• The ability to manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources while functioning with a high degree of autonomy.
• Decision-making is based on established procedures and integration/interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology, impact on other UCDH programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other programs, departments, segments of the organization, and/or organization wide.

Special Requirements 

• Must participate in the department’s DMV Pull Notice Program. Must pass a pre-employment Live Scan Fingerprinting Background check.
• Administrative deadlines or emergency incidents will require the incumbent to work a certain amount of unscheduled non-paid overtime.
• Typically, this position provides services during normal business hours of operation; however, the individual must be able to work flexible hours that can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Occasional overtime as required to meet operational needs.
• Ability to work in a high-stress structured environment.
• Ability to maintain maximum confidentiality and professionalism while working with complex issues.
• Ability to work in a non-smoking environment.
• The incumbent will be exposed to alarms and other auditory warning devices. Must be able to function in a multi-disciplinary and fast-paced work environment while maintaining the need for quality, accuracy, completeness, and timelines.

• This position may, at times require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present and, as such, the incumbent will be required to participate in a medical monitoring program and other programs necessary to enter a hazardous materials environment.
• Will be required to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; tolerate very hot and very cold temperatures; walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; work at heights greater than 10 feet; climb ladders or steps to reach objects; work in small, cramped areas; bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; discriminate among colors or match colors of wiring systems and color-coded valves and piping; stand or walk for extended periods of time with the inability to rest at will and use arms above shoulder level. When not performing duties in the field, incumbents work in an indoor office setting and are required to enter data into a terminal, PC, or keyboard device; produce written documents using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; use graphic instructions, blueprints, and layouts as part of the plan review process when checking for code compliance; and sit for extended periods of time with the ability to move at will.

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.

   About BeautifySJ and Duties:

BeautifySJ is the home of the City of San Jose’s blight reduction and encampment management programs and services. BeautifySJ works to address and prevent blight including graffiti removal, coordinating neighborhood litter clean-up events and dumpster days and removing illegal dumping. Encampment management services include weekly trash services and abatement activities to ensure that locations and conditions of encampments are cooperative and complying.  

Community Activity Worker job duties for BeautifySJ are focused on providing direct support to address litter/trash related blight in neighborhoods, waterways, and/or encampments.  Duties include setting up, planning and attending resource fairs and neighborhood-based outreach events (e.g. “dumpster days”), developing working relationships with schools, volunteers, internal and external stakeholders and non-profit partners. Project Hope is a neighborhood engagement and empowerment initiative focused on nine neighborhoods in San Jose.  Organized into operational teams, Project Hope staff are assigned to specific neighborhoods, where they assist residents to address the conditions and circumstances that exist due to systemic racism such as crime/violence, blight, lack of trust, marginalization, and inadequate services. Project Hope supports residents to create new neighborhood associations or reinvigorate existing ones, develop the organizational and capacity building skills to better utilize and reach key City, and other public/private resources to address ongoing quality-of-life issues.

Community Activity Workers in Project Hope build strong relationships with residents, partners and community. Assist  neighborhood associations/board members with planning for meetings and events. Inform residents of City services, assist neighborhood associations in building strong relationships with City of San José departments and other local government agencies.  Provide in-service trainings and workshops for community leaders to ensure self-sustainability of the neighborhood association.  Applicants should enjoy spending time in the communities directly engaging with residents (e.g. canvassing, door-to-door outreach & surveying), planning and attending community events, bringing people together for positive results, teaching residents how to engage with City and other public/private partners to address neighborhood/community issues.

The City of San Bruno Community Services Department is seeking a Food Services Coordinator to coordinate the lunch program and assist in the planning, organizing, coordination, and administration of community recreation programs for age 50-plus adults. The position works under the supervision of a Recreation Services Supervisor.

This position will perform food service management, food preparation, cooking, menu planning following Aging and Adult Services (AAS) guidelines; kitchen sanitation procedures, and routine cleaning of the kitchen appliances; purchase necessary supplies from vendors, keep detailed records of expenses and meals served, maintain food and supply inventory list. The position will also assist senior center staff in the development, scheduling, and implementation of a variety of fun lunch time activities and programs, such as the “Variety Show” and “Spring-Time Fun.”

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who can follow recipes, plan and organize menus; prepare food in large quantities and manage kitchen operations to meet a fixed preparation and serving schedule; calculate ingredients and prepare required food quantities with minimum waste; follow safety practices, sanitation requirements and health code rules; maintain a variable work schedule based on needs of program and community center; follow oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ideal candidate will also be able to safely operate kitchen tools and equipment, including proper use of knives, scissors, and other cooking tools; serve as an Emergency Disaster Worker and respond to other emergencies as needed; supervise and manage employees; demonstrate sound judgement, timeliness, initiative, and independence.

Examples of the essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Work with various government agencies on regulations, training, and education surrounding food safety, nutrition, and other guidelines.
• Maintain a variable work schedule based on needs of program and community center.
• May perform needed custodial and general maintenance work as required.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The Food Services Coordinator will possess the following:

• Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) Degree from a two-year college or university with a degree in hospitality management, culinary arts, institutional food preparation management, or a closely related field or Certificate in Culinary Arts from an accredited culinary school.
• One year experience in institutional food preparation management or related experience.
• Additional experience and training in institutional food preparation, community center use, nutrition, menu planning, and food preparation is desirable.
• Ability to obtain and maintain valid California State Driver’s License.
• Ability to obtain and maintain the following by the end of the probationary period:
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • California State certification in food safety (equivalent to the ServSafe Certificate).

THE POSITION:

The Library and Recreation Department (Child Care Division) is recruiting for a full-time Child Care Instructor II position in their Preschool Programming at Parkside Preschool.  Under the supervision of the Child Care Center Director, this position will provide developmental care and supervision to children enrolled in the childcare program; implement age appropriate curriculum for children; establish and maintain supportive relationships with children and parents; and other related duties as assigned.

Focus areas for the DCIO in the 12-month horizon include setting a team culture defined by trust and delivering the critical outcomes City departments require; driving the delivery of strong and integrated technology platforms; infusing IT’s product-project management practices into the division’s work; and readying the teams for new technologies and investments, including continued growth of San Jose’s Smart Cities and Internet-of-Things portfolios.

Responsibilities:

Leaders in IT all play a key role in working across organization boundaries to deliver superior IT services while shaping to emerging demands. Working under the CIO and Assistant CIO, the Deputy CIO is a member of the IT Executive Staff and must demonstrate how to be an equal and trusted part of the leadership team. San Jose leaders are “working executives” with high expectations for personal work output. 

Reporting through the City CIO and Assistant CIO, the Deputy CIO oversees a team of ~30 contributors and a Citywide portfolio supporting ~7,000 employees and volunteers. Key metrics for DCIO center on customer satisfaction, reliability, performance, and project-value success. 

A short snapshot of the Business Solutions DCIO’s portfolio includes over 140 primary business applications, including a technical environment that spans Oracle (PeopleSoft/Taleo/Hyperion), Cayenta, SimpliGov, Microsoft O365/SharePoint/OneDrive/MSSQL), multiple cloud providers, enterprise reporting and data visualization solutions, and specialized applications in revenue, treasury, utilities billing, et al. 

Specific responsibilities include:

1. Direct and lead multiple teams by establishing division goals and performance standards, conducting regular evaluations of the staff members' performance, and coaching staff members on performance and career development consistent with the departmental mission and expectations. 
2. Proactively monitor technology solutions and plan for system roadmaps that will benefit the City's ability to provide services in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
3. Manage and develop the skills and competency of the Information Technology Department staff based on current needs as well as emerging technologies or business strategies needed to support all work initiatives.
4. In partnership with City departments, provide executive leadership through strategic goals, objectives, and high-level requirements executed with departments. 
5. Direct the allocation of resources to achieve timely outcomes and measurable goals within budget; recommend IT spending and participate in collaborative resource planning processes to ensure high-quality services at the lowest cost to the organization.

The City of San José Information Technology Department (ITD) seeks an exceptional senior manager to lead the City Portfolio-Products-Projects Office (C3PO) as Division Manager. 

The Portfolio-Products-Projects Office is a six year-old division in the City. Deconstructing traditional project management, San Jose’s C3PO is responsible for (1) executing technology and innovation initiatives with success; (2) ensuring strong business value from City products and platforms over time; and (3) building organizational capacities for the City to consistently transform and improve. 

The C3PO Division Manager will inspire team members and nurture a culture that is truly collaborative and customer-centric towards these ends. The C3PO Division Manager works closely with the IT Department Executive Team and oversees approximately 10 to 15 contributors, an average annual project portfolio of 75+ initiatives, and 40+ primary systems for focused lifecycle management. The C3PO works across 20 major departments citywide to:

• Ensure successful project execution;
• Deliver continuously high business value from the City’s products and platforms through expert lifecycle management; and 
• Enable organizational capabilities and cultures that makes transformation through technology increasingly routine. 

Specific examples of work priorities over the next 18 months include: My San Jose, Business Process Automation, Integrated Permitting System and Development Services Upgrade and Transformation, Vehicle Blight service request management, 3-1-1 contact redesign, Business Tax system, emergency management technology refresh, IoT platforms and controls, infrastructure initiatives, and other efforts at the forefront nationally. Work is measured on the basis of hitting targets for cost, schedule, scope/quality, and realization of value at the customer level.

The City of San Jose is seeking an Enterprise Client Services Manager (Enterprise Supervising Technology Analyst) for the Information Technology Department (ITD). 

The Information Technology Department houses a team of customer-centric technicians and engineers to support the use of technology by City employees and the public. As the Enterprise Client Services Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for overseeing and managing that team of engineers and technicians ensuring excellent endpoint management services and day-to-day customer support services. 

The City of San José believes in the model of utilizing technology as a means for increased optimization as well as cost savings. With significant technology refresh and upgrade, there is a greater need for highly skilled technical hands-on leadership, oversight, and project management.
