The Department is currently recruiting to fill multiple Associate Engineer (Building) positions in the Plan Review Services Division with duties including, but not limited to:

- Advising professional engineers, architects and others concerning code requirements, engineering and planning problems arising in the preliminary design of buildings and structures.

- Examining plans, calculations and specifications for residential, multi-family, commercial and industrial buildings, including complex major structures for structural adequacy, zoning and general compliance with governing laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.

- Making independent engineering analyses on proposed buildings when required to justify the structural safety of design, and applicable electrical and mechanical systems.

- Working closely with and giving information to professional engineers, architects, contractors and the general public regarding building, zoning and general requirements concerning buildings and structures.

- Coordinating effectively with Development Service partners e.g. Planning, Fire Prevention, Public Works, Environmental Services for plan review consistency and streamlining permit process.

- Issuing permits after review of plans.

- Advising building inspectors on structural, fire and life-safety challenges arising in the field during the construction of a building project.

- Instructing inspectors and technicians in the review of simple building plans.

- Conducting safety assessments of older buildings and assisting in enforcing compliance with the City's Disaster Response Plan.

- Performing observational review of critical structural elements of the projects under construction.

The City of Hayward is seeking a Senior Utilities Engineer with a water and/or wastewater background to supervise, direct, plan, and coordinate the activities of the Utilities Division. The Senior Utilities Engineer is a mid-management level position that performs, oversees, and directs engineering activities including planning, conceptual design, final design, cost estimating, project bidding, services during construction and construction management for a variety of projects in wastewater treatment, water storage and distribution, sewer collection, and storm water management. DEFINITION
Under general direction, supervise, direct, plan, and coordinate the assigned functions and activities of the Engineering Section of the Utilities Division.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a mid-management level position that performs, oversees, and directs all assigned activities of the Utilities engineering section, including planning, conceptual design, final design, cost estimating, project bidding process, services during construction and construction management for variety of projects in water distribution, sewer collection, storm water management, and wastewater treatment.  This position is distinguished from that of subordinate Associate Civil Engineer position by its responsibility for the supervision of assigned engineering and technical staff, in addition to engineering and technical responsibilities for project development, design, and construction management for more complex projects.  This position is distinguished from Deputy Director of Public Works for Utilities by the latter position's overall responsibility for all aspects of the Utilities Division functions.

Position Summary

 

Under direction, perform varied professional and electrical engineering work at an advanced level of difficulty in the field and office. Perform assessments of and prepare written reports documenting the existing electrical systems and loads at existing facilities. Work with other engineers and technicians on design of new facilities and rehabilitation/retrofit of existing facilities. May supervise subordinate engineering personnel engaged in design and construction work. May act as resident engineer on major capital improvement projects and as oversight engineer on in-house maintenance and repair projects. Interpret, explain and carry out electrical engineering design, inspection and construction methods and procedures. Responsibilities include regular contact with other professional engineering personnel, as well as contractors and their representatives, and the general public, obtaining and providing technical electrical engineering data and information, preparing, checking and reviewing detailed and complex electrical engineering plans, specifications and related reports. The Department

The Community Development Department provides community planning, engineering, code enforcement, and building permit and inspection services. Using the City's General Plan and zoning and subdivision ordinances, the Department acts as the steward of the community by assisting the public through mandated development project reviews, the subdivision of land, and related public improvement plans.

The City of San Jose's Planning, Building and Code Enforcement (PBCE) Department is recruiting to fill a Senior Engineer position in its Building Division.
