The Position
The City of San Bruno Fire Department is offering a unique career opportunity to those who desire a challenge and wish to work in a dynamic urban setting. The City seeks a self-motivated Fire Inspector to ensure that the City’s fire inspection program provides an excellent level of service to the surrounding community. Under the general supervision of a Fire Battalion Chief / Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector performs the full range of fire inspection duties including fire and life safety inspection, plan review, code enforcement activities, and assistance with fire investigations.
 
The Fire Inspector is a hard-working and dedicated individual with experience and ability to perform a full range of fire prevention duties, including: inspecting residential, commercial and industrial units for compliance with safety laws and ordinances, as well as maintaining complete and accurate records of fire safety codes, regulations, ordinances, inspections, violations, and penalties.

Examples of Duties

In addition to the technical duties involved with fire inspection, the Fire Inspector will have opportunities to educate and enrich the San Bruno community by planning and conducting public education programs and outreach regarding fire prevention, make presentations to civic organizations and school groups, as well as observing fire drills in schools, convalescent homes, businesses, and other places within the City. 
 
The Fire Inspector will also work cooperatively with internal City departments on inspections and projects, provide expert guidance and direct support for plan check reviews, including providing professional-level reviews, comments, and recommendations to ensure that work conforms to current fire code standards and established City policy and procedure. 
 
This position upholds fire inspection best practices, serves as an integral team player and demonstrates flexibility, cooperation, and communication, adheres to labor and safety guidelines, ensures compliance with policy and procedures, respects the cultural and ethnic diversity of the community, represents the City with dignity, integrity, and the spirit of cooperation in all relations with staff and the public, and performs in a manner that upholds the values of the City.

Typical Qualifications

Requirements
 
In addition to one year of experience in fire and life safety prevention inspection or a related field (two years of firefighting experience may be substituted for the one year of fire and life safety experience experience), a special requirement to be 21 years of age or older (per Health and Safety Penal Code 830.37), and the successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.

The ideal candidate will possess Ca. State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector I and/or II series as well as certification by International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC), as well as a successful track record of the following:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible professional traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Associate Transportation Engineer class.

Other requirements include:

• Possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or professional Civil Engineer. California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer is preferred.

Code Compliance Officer (Temporary/Unbenefited)

This recruitment is for an hourly/temporary (at-will), non-benefited position limited to 999 hours of employment in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) with an approximately 16 hours per work week. Days and hours worked may be flexible, depending on the department's operational needs.

The Town of Los Gatos is recruiting for a temporary/hourly Code Compliance Officer as part of the Town's Code Compliance team in the Community Development Department. Under direction, the Code Compliance Officer performs a variety of duties and assignments including patrol, which is principally the performance of a variety of routine, nonhazardous municipal law enforcement duties for which sworn personnel are not required.

This position reports to and is supervised by the Town's Building Official. The successful candidate will receive appropriate training in the collection of information, the use of noise meters and other equipment, compliance tactics and strategies, and other matters consistent with the Town's high degree of respect and courtesy to all parties.
 
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Code Compliance Officer must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with the public and exercise sound judgment, tact, and integrity. The Code Compliance Officer must possess a calm demeanor and remain alert and coherent while under routine or stressful situations. The successful candidate must understand how to respond appropriately to changing field situations and work well with staff from Police, Community Development, and other Departments.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Patrols the Town on assigned shifts for the purpose of enforcing and preventing violations of applicable codes and ordinances and reporting unsafe conditions and other related conditions.
• Focuses on public disturbance, or other nuisance behaviors.  Documents field observations and actions accurately.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING 
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. 

• Bachelors Degree in planning or a related field. 
• One year experience in investigation, zoning administration, law enforcement or related field. 
• Additional related experience may be substituted year for year for the education requirement provided the minimum attainment is high school graduation.
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
• Desirable experience interpreting policies and ordinances and demonstrated work experience in code compliance and preferably with a municipality.

DEFINITION

Under direction of the Chief Building Supervisor/Building Official, to assist in inspecting buildings and building construction for conformance with regulations, to perform construction contract management and inspections, and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Enforces building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, energy, and fire codes; issues permits for all building activities; does plan checks on all construction, sewer connections, and septic tank installation, to ensure code compliance; investigates violations and checks all complaints regarding building procedures; works closely with Fire Marshall’s office on plan checks and fire code enforcement; enforces zoning code regulations and business licenses; gives information to the public regarding codes and ordinances, and confers with owners, architects, and engineers regarding design construction and filing of records, plans, maps, and similar documents; keeps records and prepares reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  State and local building and fire codes and ordinances, provisions of electrical and plumbing regulations, principles and techniques of building construction, principles of structural design and basic engineering mathematics, building materials and accepted safety standards, standard installation procedures for electrical and plumbing facilities, and local zoning regulations.

Ability to:  Analyze, interpret, and check building plans and specifications; understand, interpret and apply laws and regulations; prepare clear and concise written reports; use a computer to record, organize, and monitor all building inspection activities including written reports; maintain cooperative working relationships with engineers, architects contractors, government officials, employees, and the general public.  Interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Experience:  Three years of progressively responsible experience in a variety of building inspection or construction work.

Education:  Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Certification:  Possession of a “International Code Council Building Inspector Certification” , is desirable, or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months  of  hire date.
