 Job Description:  The Children's Fund of San Mateo County is seeking two Part-Time/Temporary interns. This position would report directly to the Children's Fund Program Coordinator and assist with the Holiday Gift program. Each year over 1,500 gifts are distributed to low income/foster youth living in San Mateo County. This is a fun, fast paced, hands on position that requires dedication and flexibility to the job.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.
 

 

Examples Of Duties

• Manage and stock inventory of toys in the warehouse
• Manage scheduling with donors and establish good working relationships with both internal and external staff
• Work in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines
• Create working relationships with the community
• Conduct data entry and inventory tracking in Microsoft Excel
• Organizing toys for pick up and manage donations delivered 
• Assist with lifting/ moving items in our warehouse 
• Sorting through items donated and tracking incoming donations

San Mateo County Parks is currently seeking a full-time extra help Bilingual Community Engagement Intern II.
 

This position would be based out of Flood and Friendship County Parks and primarily working with the communities surrounding these parks. 

 

Friendship County Park is located in North Fair Oaks, an unincorporated area of Redwood City. Through community collaboration, the small urban park was developed to provide outdoor recreation and space to promote community gardening. The park is situated on San Francisco Public Utility Commission land and is managed by the San Mateo County Parks Department. Less than an acre in size, the park features 30 community garden planters, a playground, picnic tables and more. Staff from San Mateo County Health’s Nutrition, Education and Obesity Program provide nutritional education sessions for gardeners and families. Plot use is through an agreement with San Mateo County Parks and requires regular participation in meetings and clean-up days. 

 

Flood County Park is a 21 acre park located in Menlo Park. It is primarily used as a location for family and group picnicking, playground use, and walking by the local community. The park is currently undergoing a planning process to renovate the facilities and encourage use by new sections of the local communities. 

 

An intern at these locations would work on improving the interpretive elements of the park and provide programming and outreach opportunities for the local communities.

 

The Community Engagement intern will report to Flood Park and be able to drive to Friendship Park and other park locations as needed. The intern will be supervised by the Interpretive Division Park Staff. The position will be approximately 60% indoor, desk work/classroom programs and 40% outdoor, event/program work.

Examples Of Duties

A Bilingual Community Engagement Intern would be responsible for:

• Management of Friendship Park Community Garden, including but not limited to:

  • Management of garden plot availability and agreements

  • Primary point of contact for Community Garden participants; maintaining regular communications by County phone, text, and email

  • Work alongside gardeners to identify and address any needs or challenges and maintain garden

  • Lead and facilitate regular on-site educational opportunities for gardeners with staff from San Mateo County Health, Office of Sustainability, and community partners

  • Manage on-site garden tools and supplies; identify additional supplies that may be required

• Community Program Coordination and Outreach, including but not limited to: 

  • Coordinating and leading programs with Community Based Organizations and Partner Organizations within the community near Friendship and Flood Parks (i.e. Libraries, Schools)

  • Leading interpretive programs for the general public at Friendship and Flood Parks 

  • Tabling at local community events, such as Farmer’s Markets

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will: 

• Have strong interpersonal skills and possess the ability to effectively communicate in English and Spanish with diverse community members and San Mateo County staff to support gardeners. 

• Be an enthusiastic, outgoing, positive, and energetic person who can work collaboratively or independently with little to no supervision. 

• Have the ability to learn new skills, the willingness to be flexible, and follow directions. 

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Bilingual in Spanish required

• Experience in food growing and garden management desired

• Knowledge of and ability to teach gardening concepts desired

• Ability to engage with individuals of many demographics and histories – youth, seniors, immigrants, economically diverse

• Strong planning and organizational skills with ability to plan events and organize participants and volunteers

• Must have a valid California Driver’s License

THE DEPARTMENT

The South San Francisco Public Library is a full-service library committed to delivering quality services to a diverse community.  Library services are available at three sites, including the Main Library (901 Civic Campus Way), the Grand Avenue Library (306 Walnut Avenue) and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (520 Tamarack Lane).  Lifelong literacy services are provided by Project Read at the Main Library and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (GMCLC).  The City currently has one opening in this classification, for a position providing programs and services at the Grand Avenue Library.

Sergeants are first-line supervisors responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and performance of personnel who work in a variety of department units including patrol, investigations, special events, records, parking and traffic, and administration.  Supervisory duties include carrying out and overseeing general law enforcement / public safety functions; setting goals and objectives for the unit; contributing to the fulfillment of objectives; motivating and developing personnel; ensuring that personnel meet performance expectations; providing documentation of performance; and implementing strategies that enhance department operations.  Sergeants are expected to work closely and collaboratively with their peers within the department, to effectively coordinate the day-to-day operations of the various units as well as the department. 

A Stanford Department of Public Safety Sergeant must maintain proficiency and exercise the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform basic law enforcement functions as well as directly supervise personnel assigned to his/her work group.  The knowledge base and skills required for this position include, but are not limited to: an understanding of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations; rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and preservation of evidence; techniques and applications of self-defense and proper use of force; use, operation, and maintenance of police equipment, vehicles and tools; department policies and procedures; and institutional policies and procedures (such as the Administrative Guide). 

In addition to their supervisory responsibilities, Sergeants are expected to perform the same basic job duties as line personnel, including, but not limited to: investigating crimes and arresting individuals; issuing citations; and participating in community outreach activities.  Sergeants must balance their administrative responsibilities with in-field supervision, spending considerable time working in the field and directly with the staff in their assigned unit. 
SUDPS personnel are considered “essential” or “required” University personnel and shall respond to campus when directed to do so, even with little advanced notice.  Sergeants are integral to the department’s overall emergency response efforts.  Absent a higher ranking sworn SUDPS member, the responsibility to assure shift operational efficiency shall be the primary responsibility of a Sergeant.
Work is performed primarily on-site; the position is subject to shift work including day, swing, and night shifts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The City of San Bruno offers a unique opportunity to serve as a Librarian I/II, with a particular focus on youth services. Librarians perform professional library work including programming, reference services, cataloging, interlibrary loans, and children’s or adult services, with an emphasis on fostering literacy and lifelong learning among young patrons. They work under the supervision of the Library Services Manager and the Community Services Superintendent and may provide indirect supervision to paraprofessional staff of the library, ensuring high-quality support for youth and other community members alike. 

Librarian I is entry level position, responsible for a limited scope of a library program area, which requires the application of fundamental library science principles and practices.  

Librarian II is a journey level position, distinguished from that of Librarian I, by the greater complexity of the assignments and by the greater independence with which the employee is expected to operate. 

Examples of the essential duties and responsibilities include:  

• Perform professional work in rendering reference services, reader's advisory, and library instruction to patrons, with a special emphasis on youth and children’s services. This includes classification and cataloging of materials, ordering of books, documents, periodicals, and other materials.

What You’ll Do

The Communications Manager will develop and execute the City of San Mateo’s communication plan, which will include key actions to enhance community engagement and participation, increase community awareness about City activities and initiatives, foster cross-departmental coordination and unity, standardize media response procedures, improve the website user experience, and standardize training and onboarding for new communications staff. You will also lead the City’s efforts to strengthen and expand its online and social media presence and work with community leaders and partners to help enhance San Mateo’s positive reputation. The Communications Manager receives general direction from the City Manager and/or Assistant City Manager, has direct supervisory responsibilities, and will lead collaborative teams.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to do general building and facilities maintenance work and other related duties as required.

Building Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class and Building Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class in the series. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established pattern that has been explained before the work is started. Generally, changes in procedures or exceptions are explained in detail as they arise. Under the flexible staffing concept, Building Maintenance Worker II positions that may become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Building Maintenance Worker I or Utility Maintenance Worker level for training purposes.

Positions in the Building Maintenance Worker II class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from the Building Maintenance Worker I class, or when filled from the outside, require prior specific experience in building-related construction and maintenance. Appointment to this class requires the employee to be performing substantially the full range of building maintenance duties and to meet the qualification standards for the class. This class requires the ability to work independently exercising judgement and initiative. Duties will normally require the ability to operate the full range of mechanical equipment related to building maintenance.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists in, and at the journey level, performs such functions as painting, glazing, repairing plumbing, installing locks, windows, doors, or lighting fixtures; cleaning, waxing, or refinishing floors, walls, and furniture; cleaning and repairing toilet fixtures; sweeping and cleaning interior and exterior of buildings as needed. Makes routine inspection of proper operation and safe conditions of park and playground equipment, walks, roads, and courts; assists in repair or installation of playground equipment of facilities. Assists in the adjustment, and minor repair of heating and air conditioning units; building and finishing cabinets, countertops, and office furniture and staining and varnishing various wood furniture and surfaces. Performs remodeling and renovation tasks for municipal facilities, paints interior and exterior of City buildings as required, and safely operates various power and hand tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Use and care of general carpentry and maintenance tools; general techniques of carpentry, concrete work, painting, glazing and plumbing.

Ability to: Follow oral and written directions; learn and use skilled tasks and apply current practices and procedures; maintain an appropriate public service demeanor; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Physical Capability to: Perform sustained, strenuous manual labor; climb, lift, crawl, stoop and bend to reach work; may work outdoors in temperature extremes and inclement weather.

Experience: Building Maintenance Worker II: two (2) years full-time experience in general building maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, or painting.

Education: Building Maintenance Worker II: High school graduation or the equivalent.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

The City of Pacifica is a beautiful coastal community, just south of San Francisco. Currently, the City Manager’s Office has an opening for a customer service oriented, human resources professional to join our team as the Human Resources Manager.

THE POSITION

The Human Resources Manager, an at-will position, under general direction of the Assistant City Manager, recommends, develops, implements and evaluates goals, objectives, policies and procedures related to assigned human resource program functions, such as benefits, classification and compensation, recruitment and selection, among others. Consults and collaborates with City departments, employees, labor organizations, commissions, advisory boards and the public on relevant aspects of assigned program area. This is a management classification located in the City’s central Human Resources Division with overall responsibility for the day-to-day operations, which has Citywide impact. The Human Resources Division is comprised of 4.0 FTE (1) Human Resources Manager, (1) Senior Human Resources Analyst, (2) Human Resources Analysts, who come together to support the full-service City-wide efforts of over 200.75 FTE and approximately 30 – 120 PTE.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Interview, select, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate program staff.
• Write and review policies, procedures and methods relative to assigned program; formulate, recommend and/or implement actions for program improvement;
• Meet with department management and staff on human resource issues.
• Interpret and explain provisions of applicable laws, rules, policies and agreements to City management, employees, employee organizations and the public.
• Assist in the selection and management of vendors, consultants and service providers; oversee compliance of consultants and vendors with contract provisions.
• Advise managers and employees on City procedures, benefits, and existing policies relative to assigned program.
• Coordinate and administer program activities such as open enrollment, Citywide classification studies, and executive recruitments, among others.
• Participates in the establishment of strategic short-term and long-range program plans.
• Assist in the development of the program budget.
• Prepare detailed and professional reports and other written communications, including policies and procedures, policies, executive summaries and statistical data.
• Prepare and deliver oral presentations designed to educate and explain program services.
• Meet and/or negotiate with representatives of employee organizations.
• Collaborate with information systems staff to identify and evaluate assigned program's system/database needs and implement new systems or changes as necessary.
• Represent the department in meetings with the board, the executive team, labor organizations, and other community organizations or committees.
• Respond to inquiries, problems and complaints from applicants and hiring managers.
• Perform other related tasks as necessary.
