DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:

     The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.  In addition to the starting salary, employees in the Park Ranger classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay. 

     The Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services Department is looking for highly motivated, personable individuals with strong leadership skills and innovative ideas to become part of a dynamic team of employees with a strong commitment to providing excellent service to our diverse community. Bilingual applicants speaking a second language such as Spanish or Vietnamese are encouraged to apply.

     Under supervision, this classification performs duties of moderate difficulty including performing overall work in park operations and visitor services; resource and environmental protection; greeting visitors and explaining/interpreting park features; collecting and accounting for fees; performing rescue and fire suppression activities; administering first aid as needed; patrolling parks; enforcement of state and local laws; performing conservation programs and projects; providing lead direction to other park personnel; coordinating and leading volunteer and internship programs; providing traffic and parking control; and preparing written and oral reports and other communication.

     The Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services Department currently has approximately four full- time permanent positions.

     Selection Process

     The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to the Job Specific Questions. Only the candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews, one of which may include a practical/writing exercise.

     Applicants deemed the most qualified after application screening, oral interviews, and/or practical/written exercise will be required to pass a background investigation, polygraph test and medical examination and fingerprint clearance prior to appointment.

MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT I

This is a temporary part-time position:  Approximately 20-40 hours per week depending on the needs of the department.

Position:         Per Diem Maintenance Assistant I

Salary:             $19.71 – $22.50 hourly (depending on experience)

Hours:             Variable days, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

THE POSITION: Under close supervision, perform unskilled manual and semi-skilled manual park maintenance work, and perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

• Cleaning restrooms, emptying garbage cans
• Removing weeds and trash from parks
• Assist in mowing, edging, pruning, fertilizing, and seeding
• Perform a wide variety of general grounds and facility maintenance work including raking leaves, cleaning walkways, removing debris, cleaning restrooms, and related work.
• Water, weed, prune, renovate, and landscaped areas.
• Turf care including mowing, thatching, fertilizing, plugging, and installation of new turf areas.
• Prepare soil and plant flowerbeds, shrubs, and landscape areas, including staking, fertilizing and other necessary procedures.
• Utilize a wide variety of hand and power tools and landscape maintenance equipment.
• Move and install park and recreation equipment.
• Assist in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The incumbent should have the ability to read, write, and carry out oral and written directions, maintain cooperative work relationships, and operate various park maintenance equipment. Individuals must possess a valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record (recent DMV printout required). This is seasonal work which will include weekends and holidays depending on the needs of the department.

Covid-19 Vaccination Requirement:

In order to promote a safe and healthy workplace for employees and members of the public who interact with employees or visit City of San Mateo worksites and facilities, the City requires all new hires to be fully vaccinated prior to their start date as a condition of employment. The City of Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department is looking for people interested in working approximately 15-20 hours per week, working the special events programs operated by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.  Incumbents will typically assist in setting up, monitoring, and breaking down the events all while providing excellent customer service to visitors.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Follow event plan and execute assigned duties effectively and efficiently; monitor or manage interactive recreation areas which may include, but are not limited to, arts and crafts, organized games, sports, drama, social recreation, and music/singing activities; supervise recreation participants insuring that proper safety precautions are observed in assigned activities; maintain and care for equipment as appropriate to help promote recreation activities effectively; assist in organizing, promoting, and managing special events; assist in setting up, monitoring, and breaking down the events; report to supervisors orally and in writing; complete assigned paperwork such as timecards, attendance reports and/or incident and accident reports; perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

The Program Leader I (Special Events) is responsible for presenting the service oriented, positive, and enthusiastic mission of the City of Redwood City.  The ideal candidate will enjoy promoting a variety of recreation activities.  The ideal candidate will also have the ability to multi-task, and demonstrate excellent leadership and customer service methods and practices.

The purpose of this program is to augment full-time staffing in the City of Lincoln Firefighting program, but mostly the intent is to provide opportunity to develop the skills and abilities necessary for a candidate to gain employment in the fire services industry. The non-sworn Reserve Firefighter will gain the valuable work experience needed to obtain the California State Firefighter I certification. The City of Lincoln will benefit from producing well trained reservists who assist the department with the gained skills, knowledge and abilities. The Reserve Firefighter will receive on-going training.
