Description

The City of Live Oak (Public Works Department) is recruiting to fill ONE vacancy as as a Maintenance Worker I, II, III, or Lead position. Classification will depend on qualifications and experience.

 

Description 

Under varying levels of supervision, performs maintenance and repair of City facilities, roads, streets, water and sewer maintenance activities and performs other duties essential to the maintenance of the City. Current and valid  water distribution certifications and Class A/B commercial drivers license are highly desirable. 

Classifications 

Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry-level class in the maintenance series. Under immediate supervision the applicant will perform semi-skilled labor and maintenance and repair. Salary $40,333.75 - $52,125.54 per year ($19.393 - $25.063 per hour) DOQ

Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level class in the maintenance series. Under general supervision the applicant will perform semi-skilled and skilled labor and maintenance repair. Salary $44,680.45 - $57,743.03 per year ($21.484 - $27.758 per hour) DOQ

Maintenance Worker III: This is the senior level class in the maintenance series. Under limited supervision the applicant will organize, assign, review, and participate in the work of assigned personnel engaged in maintenance equipment operation work pertaining to building, maintenance and repair. Salary $48,664.92 - $62,892.37 per year ($23.399 - $30.234 per hour) DOQ 

Maintenance Worker Lead: This is the lead level class in the maintenance series. Under direction of supervisory and management staff performs a variety of duties related to scheduling, planning, assigning, and prioritizing construction and maintenance related projects. Exercises technical and functional supervision over staff engaged in maintenance and repair activities. Salary $53,531.42 - $69,181.61 per year ($25.740 - $33.261 per hour) DOQ

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the construction industry, including safety regulations pertaining to the work; and have experience practicing safe work methods. The successful incumbent has the ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships and excels in a team environment. They will be motivated and demonstrate initiative in their work. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating a variety of vehicles and using tools related to the work. 

Essential Duties:

  • Performs water distribution system flushing, and cleaning of sewer pipelines with a combination sewer truck. 
  • May be assigned to perform routine maintenance on that equipment. 
  • Performs and assists in the maintenance of the water and facility equipment and facilities. 
  • Maintains and repairs storm ponds. 
  • Maintains, repairs, and installs water and wastewater pipelines, services and related equipment including water meters and backflow preventers.
  • Installs and maintains water meters. 
  • Backfills trenches and uses asphalt to repair streets after water and sewer line repairs. 
  • Street repairs including installation of asphalt, pothole repair, curb gutter and sidewalk installation and repairs. Street sign maintenance. 
  • May conduct underground service alert (USA) inspections. 
  • Assists with flushing of water distribution system and cleaning of sewer pipelines with a combination sewer truck. 
  • Required to be on standby on a rotating basis to ensure continuity of operations during evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to respond within 45 minutes.

Lead Maintenance 

  • Train other crew members to correctly perform all duties within their position description. 
  • Works at a higher level of efficiency and quality than at maintenance worker level III. 
  • Have knowledge of applicable standards, codes, and regulations. 
  • Inspects and adjusts equipment before start of work. 
  • Collects field data for use by supervisors. 
  • Prepares department memos and reports as needed. 
  • Evaluate problems and recommends solutions. 
  • Maintains inventory of all equipment including tools, traffic control equipment, spare parts, signs, water meter tracking, vehicle maintenance needs and other related items. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Safe use, purpose, and maintenance of hand and power tools and power equipment used in the execution of assigned duties. 
  • Hand and power tool operations. 
  • Personal computers; applications of word processing, Excel, and other related computer programs. 
  • General knowledge regarding the use, purpose, and the hazards associated with certain chemicals used in the water field. 
  • General construction and maintenance materials, methods and terminology. 
  • Basic carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, and mechanical systems. 

Ability to:

  • Maintain mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. 
  • Make basic math calculations quickly and accurately. 
  •  Understand and follow oral and written instructions; work independently in the absence of supervision. 
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  • Meet physical, mental and environmental demands of the job. 
  • Work at moderate heights of at least 50 feet. 
  • Safely drive and operate vehicles and equipment. 
  • Perform heavy physical labor including lifting and moving objects up to 50lbs., and up to 75lbs. with assistance, 
  • Operate under deadlines. 

 

Education and Experience

Level I:

  • Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to read and write at a level required for successful job performance.

Level II:

  • Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to read and write at a level required for successful job performance.
  • 2 years of recent work experience in construction trades.
  • or, 1 year experience at a level equivalent to Maintenance Worker I with the city of Live Oak. 

Level III:

  • Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to read and write at a level required for successful job performance.
  • 3 years of recent work experience in Public Works Maintenance work relating to streets and water/sewer. 
  • or, 1 year experience at a level equivalent to Maintenance Worker II with the city of Live Oak. 

Lead:

  • Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to read and write at a level required for successful job performance.
  • 5 years of recent work experience as a lead in Public Works Maintenance work relating to streets and water/sewer 
  • or 5 years experience as a construction Lead or Forman, performing underground water and/or sewer work, and pavement work.

 

Licenses and Certificates 

Level I: 

  • Possession of a valid California Class C drivers license. 
  • Possession of a safe driving record per the City's driving standards and policies. 
  • Class B license with Airbrake and Tanker endorsement is required within 6 months of appointment and prior to successful completion of probation. 
  • Public Works incumbents must obtain a California D-2 Water Distribution Certification prior to successful completion of probation. 

Level II:

  • At the time of hire or promotion from Level I Maintenance Worker must possess a California Class B drivers license with Airbrake and Tanker endorsements and a California D-2 Water Distribution Certification prior to successful completion of probation. 
  • Incumbents must also successfully complete specialized and certification in Pesticide/Herbicide Training. 

Level III:

  • At the time of hire or promotion from Level II Maintenance Worker must possess a California Class B drivers license with Airbrake and Tanker endorsement. 
  • Must posses a California D-2 Water Distribution Certification, Backflow Certificate and successfully complete specialized training in Pesticide/Herbicide, and Work Zone Traffic Control Safety. 

Lead:

  • At the time of hire or promotion must possess a California Class B drivers license with Airbrake and Tanker endorsement or obtain within 6 months. 
  • Must possess a California D-2 Water Distribution Certification, or obtain within two testing cycles.
  • A backflow Certificate or obtain within three testing cycles.
  • Successfully complete specialized training in Work Zone Traffic Control Safety as the City offers trainings. 

Benefits

Merit Increase: Typically 5% each year, contingent on a positive annual evaluation. 

Bilingual Pay: $125 after certification. 

Longevity Pay: An adjustment of 3% for any employee who completes 15 years of service and a longevity adjustment for 3% for any employee who completes 20 years of service. 

Holidays: Regular full time employees receive 12 paid holidays per year. 

Vacation: Regular full time employees accrue: 

10 days per year - beginning until 3rd year anniversary 

15 days per year - 3rd year until 10 year anniversary 

17 days per year - 10th year until 15 year anniversary 

19 days per year - 15th year until 24 year anniversary 

20 days per year -  24th year and over 

Floating Holiday:  Regular full time employees receive 3 floating holidays per year. 

Sick: Regular full time employees accrue 4 hours per pay period. 13 days per calendar year. 

Health Care Coverage: The city provides employees plus their dependents health coverage options which include medical, dental, and vision care with an employer contribution that covers 90% of medical, and dental and 100% of vision. Coverage begins on the first day of the month following employment. 

Employee Assistance Program: City paid confidential counseling. 

Life Insurance: The City provides employee life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance coverage of $25,000.  An employee paid supplemental life policy is available for purchase. 

FSA: Employees may participate in the City's Flexible Spending Accounts after 30 days. 

Retirement : The City of Live Oak is a member of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).

Classic Member - 2.7% at 55 - 8% employee contribution. 

PEPRA Member - 2% at 62 - 7.75% Employee contribution (CalPERS determines rate). 

457 Deferred: Employees may contribute to a deferred option. No employer contributions. 

Social Security: Employees contribute into Social Security (FICA) and Medicare.

Disability: Employees contribute into the State of California disability insurance program. This program provides short-term disability insurance and Paid Family Leave wage replacement benefits to eligible workers.
