DEFINITION: Under general supervision, provide for the well-being and safety of children with special needs in a fun, summer camp environment.  Collaboratively with the wider Arts and Recreation department, we strive to have a meaningful impact on the lives of our participants while providing creative programs offered in an inclusive, fun, and innovative environment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

The following duties are essential to the success of this position:

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and campers. 
  • Possess strong leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: arts, crafts, sports, playground games, drama, songs/music, nature or special events. 
  • Manage the task of checking in and checking out each child to the proper guardian. 
  • Encourage good behavior and appropriate manners. 
  • Encourage active play, read books and provide a safe and nurturing environment. 
  • Ability to lead groups of campers in various day camp activities and help with transitions between activities. 
  • Motivate campers through example. 
  • Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. 
  • Create and maintain a positive day camp environment for campers with special needs. 
  • Accurately maintain attendance records and head counts. 
  • Practice proper hygiene, with oneself and children, to deter the spread of disease (colds, flu, etc.). 
  • Respond professionally to emergencies, provide care according to the level of training.  
  • The ability to speak English clearly and understandably. 
  • Perform related duties as required. 

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to react quickly to emergencies and perform required lifesaving skills.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates must be 17 years of age or older.  Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. Candidates must be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency and providing care according to the level of training.
