PART-TIME ARCHIVIST (LIBRARIAN I/LIBRARY ASSISTANT I)

The Mill Valley Public Library is looking for a part-time archivist for the Lucretia Little History Room. This individual should be passionate about preserving local history, particularly oral histories.

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF HOURS:

12 - 15 hours per week, depending on availability and experience.

Salary: $21.81 - $39.84 per hour, depending on experience and education.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Reporting to the Supervising Archivist, the Part-Time Archivist in the Lucretia Little History Room will oversee the processing of new oral history recordings and work through the backlog. The ideal candidate will be able to multitask, work independently and collaboratively, with excellent communication and organization skills, and an eye for detail.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Accession, arrange, describe, and preserve oral history interviews.
  • Process and digitize incoming donations, as well as the backlog.
  • Assist in archival workflow development and implementation.
  • Contribute to and lead outreach projects showcasing the History Room’s collections.
  • Assist with ad hoc projects as needed.

Ideal Candidate

This individual is passionate about preserving and providing access to local history. They have experience managing oral history and digital collections, and are creative, independent, and detail-oriented. The candidate will spearhead the processing of our oral history collection, ensuring it’s accessible to the community.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Passion for local history.
  • Hands-on experience with archive/library/museum collections.
  • Experience with cataloging systems and software (preferably PastPerfect).
  • Skill with tools, workflow implementation, and quality assurance for digital archives.
  • Familiarity with digital asset management and collections management.
  • Experience with applying metadata standards and schema for descriptive, structural, and preservation metadata (DACS, EAD, MARC)
  • Interest in working with oral history recordings.
  • Familiarity with current archival issues and trends.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and project planning and time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a small team of professionals from different fields and backgrounds.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in archive studies or library information science (earned or in progress).
  • Experience with research and reference services in an archives or manuscript repository.
  • Interest in developing technical and project management skills.
