Description

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is looking for Lifeguards for our fantastic swim lessons and aquatic programs at the Silliman Activity & Family Aquatic Center. We are looking for positive, patient, motivated, self-driven individuals that have a passion for working with children and wish to make a difference! Those that are successful in the application review will be invited to attend an in-person interview. Please note that this position requires you to work in an indoor aquatic environment subject to warm/humid temperatures.

  • Applicants should be able to work at least 12-20 hours September through April, including weekends and holidays, with mandatory trainings.
  • Must be flexible regarding scheduling as it is based on business demands to include some weekend and holiday availability. We are flexible around school schedules.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, Lifeguards will ensure the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies
  • Maintaining constant surveillance of patrons in the facility
  • Acting immediately and appropriately to ensure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency/Providing emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Performing various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
  • Having a thorough knowledge of rescue techniques

Ideal Candidate

REQUIREMENTS:

  • City application (Only accepted via Calopps)
  • At least 15 years old at the time of application submission.
  • Must successfully pass a TB test before appointment.
  • Required to submit to a City Fingerprint Background Investigation if age 18+
  • Complete an in-person swimming skills evaluation, to be scheduled with the Aquatic Coordinator. That swim test is a 300-yard swim (freestyle or breaststroke, demonstrating breath control), 2-minute tread without the use of hands/arms, retrieve a 10lbs object from 20 yards and return it to the side of the pool within 1 min, 40 sec.
  • You may be asked to complete a swim instructor swim test as well if you have or are interested in working as a swim instructor. Including, but not limited to 25-yard swim of Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke, Butterfly. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required (Waterpark and Emergency Oxygen certification preferred).
  • Working any lifeguard shifts is contingent upon acquiring these certifications.

Benefits

This is a non-benefited, temporary position. Temporary employees will only work up to 1,000 hours per year. 

PART-TIME BENEFITS:

  • Sick Leave: After 90 days from an employee’s hire date, the employee is entitled to 5 days (40 hours) sick leave per fiscal year. Sick hours do not roll over to the next year and therefore must be utilized or forfeited annually.


RETIREMENT:

  • Temporary employees will be required to contribute to a Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan.


PART-TIME EMPLOYEE STATUS:

  • Employment may be terminated with or without cause or notice, at any time, at the will of the City of Newark, in its sole discretion.
