Description

The City of Newark's Recreation and Community Services Department is excited to announce an excellent opportunity for motivated and skilled professionals to join our team as a Recreation Coordinator. This key role involves coordinating and implementing a variety of recreation and human services programs and events, including sports, fitness, aquatics, and adult and youth development activities. The Recreation Coordinator will also supervise temporary and volunteer staff, and perform a variety of clerical support services.

The City is dedicated to fostering a well-planned, attractive, and active community through effective recreation and human services programs with our new Recreation Coordinator leveraging their knowledge and experience in organizing, and implementing a broad range of recreational activities and human services. 

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Additional education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of one year.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years experience in recreation, community services, or related field.

**Completion of two years of college level course work (60 semester units) with an emphasis in recreation, community services, or related field is desirable.

License:

  • Possession of a valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
  • Possession of valid certificates in Lifeguarding, CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED and Emergency Oxygen are highly desirable.

Special Requirements:

  • Position will require working occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned.

Benefits

SALARY:  $7,529 to $8,957 (approx.) per month 

The City offers an outstanding benefits package that includes:  

  • Health Insurance: The City contributes the following amounts towards employee’s health and welfare benefits: 
    • Employee only: $913
    • Employee + 1 dependent: $1,826
    • Employee + 2 or more dependents: $2,412

If employee declines all medical insurance with the City, employee may receive up to $450 cash in lieu per month. If employee participates in the cafeteria plan, but does not utilize the full benefit, employee will receive up to $450 “cash-back” per month. Any cash back will be paid to the employee in taxable compensation. Proof of medical insurance is required.

  • Retirement: CalPERS 2.5% @ 55 for Classic members or 2.0% @ 62 for New PEPRA members. The City does not participate in Social Security.  The City participates in Medicare.
  • Vacation Accrual: 6.667 to 16.667 hours per month depending upon years of service.
  • Sick Leave: Up to 8 hours per month.
  • Holidays: 13 paid holidays per year.
  • Deferred Compensation: Voluntary participation.
  • Life Insurance: City-paid $50,000 policy.
  • Educational Reimbursement:  Up to $4,000 per fiscal year.
  • Long-term and Short-term Disability: Voluntary participation.
  • Wellness: On-site bicycle lockers, and employee wellness activities such as workshops, fitness challenges, and informal meetings.
  • Health & Fitness: On-site state-of-the-art gym available for use by Department employees. Employees and eligible family members living in the same household may use the Silliman Activity & Family Aquatic Center free of charge. Additionally, employees and their eligible family members receive resident rates for class registration and facility rentals.
