Description

The General Maintenance Worker is essential to maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of our community spaces. This role involves a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Field Preparation: Setting up and maintaining sports fields, including mowing, watering, infield grooming, mound/plate repair, edging and chalking the field
  • Groundskeeping & Landscaping: General grounds maintenance, such as weeding, fertilizing, watering, pruning, and renovating landscaped areas.
  • Facility & Equipment Maintenance: Performing minor repairs on facilities like fences and benches, ensuring all maintenance equipment is in good working order, and utilizing a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Cleaning & Waste Management: Cleaning restrooms, emptying garbage cans, and removing weeds and trash from parks and walkways.
  • Event & Equipment Support: Assisting with the setup and teardown of events, moving and installing park and recreation equipment, and handling heavy objects related to maintenance.

This position is critical to ensuring our community spaces are well-maintained, welcoming, and ready for use by residents and visitors alike.

 

Ideal Candidate

This job is within the Recreation and Community Services Department of the City and involves frequent interactions with the public. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public by utilizing excellent customer service skills. The role requires a person who can understand and carry out both written and verbal instructions, follow safe working practices, and possess knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and field preparation which includes the use of a motorized tractor to prep fields.

Benefits

COMPENSATION  

* This is a non-benefited, temporary position. Temporary employees will only work up to 1,000 hours per year.

PART-TIME BENEFITS:

  • Sick Leave: After 90 days from an employee’s hire date, the employee is entitled to 5 days (40 hours) sick leave per fiscal year. Sick hours do not roll over to the next year and therefore must be utilized or forfeited annually.


RETIREMENT:

  • Temporary employees will be required to contribute to a Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan.


TEMPORARY EMPLOYEE STATUS:

  • Employment may be terminated with or without cause or notice, at any time, at the will of the City of Newark, in its sole discretion.

Candidates must fulfill the following to be considered for this position:
