Description

Enjoy working outdoors?  Want to make a difference in your community?  School Crossing Guards play an important role in helping children who walk or bicycle to school by helping them safely cross the street at key crosswalk locations.

The City is interviewing to fill several openings for part-time positions.  Apply immediately to be considered.  Regular assignment and substitute (on-call) positions are available.  Hours for the 24-25 school year are typically 1-1.5 hours in the morning and 1-1.5 hours in the afternoon depending on the school location and schedule.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Monitor and assist in crossing of school-age children during peak traffic times at select locations.
  • Provide appropriate safety instruction for children crossing streets and intersections.
  • Watch traffic flow and wait for an appropriate gap between vehicles to lead groups of school children safely across a street.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidates should possess:

  • Knowledge of proper methods of crossing children at crosswalks
  • The ability to effectively communicate with children, school officials, City staff, and the general public
  • Good judgment and the ability to remain calm in emergencies
  • The ability to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, children, school officials, and fellow employees       
  • The ability to stand and/or walk for 3-4 hours per day
  • The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including rain, cold, and high heat and humidity

This is a part-time position, averaging 10-12.5 hours per week, approximately 400 hours annually for regularly assigned guards. Most substitutes work 200-300 hours per year.
