Description

This is the entry-level class in the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator series. Positions assigned to this class work under supervision on a training basis in the performance of a wide variety of routine unskilled to semi-skilled wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance tasks that do not require previous wastewater treatment plant experience. General work is observed and reviewed during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures or exceptions to rules, are explained in detail as they arise.

This position reports to the Utility Systems Supervisor and does not supervise.

Positions in this class must meet the requirements of WWTP Operator I within fifteen (15) months of hire date.

Knowledge of:

    1. Basic principles of wastewater treatment.
    2. Basic principles of wastewater and storm water collection systems.
    3. Safe work practices.
    4. Basic computer skills.

Ability to: 

  1. Learn the operation of equipment used in a wastewater treatment plant.
  2. Perform minor repairs on pumps, valves and other equipment used in a wastewater treatment plant.
  3. Perform heavy manual labor and ground maintenance work.
  4. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  5. Perform simple recordkeeping.
  6. Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  7. Learn the skills necessary to safely operate heavy equipment. 

Ideal Candidate

Experience & Education:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and abilities is qualifying. Typical knowledge, skill and abilities are:

  1. Equivalent to a high school diploma of G.E.D.
  2. Some experience in general maintenance of buildings and equipment.

 

Special Requirements: 

  1. The incumbent in this position is required to participate in the State Water Quality recognized courses and on-the-job training related to wastewater treatment in order to obtain the knowledge necessary to qualify for and pass the written examination for Class I Operator Certification, within fifteen (15) months from time of appointment.
  2. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
  3. Ability to work swing shifts, weekends and holidays.
  4. Ability to report to the work-site within forty (40) minutes after receiving notification of being called back.

  1. Physical Standards:

Positions in this class require moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and carrying loads weighing between 50 to 95 pounds. Positions may also involve work, resulting in exposure to the weather and disease-causing bacteria.

  • Holidays - The City recognizes 11 days each calendar year plus 2 floating holidays.
  • Vacation - Employees earn 3.70 hours of vacation per pay period for the first three years and increase to the maximum of 9.23 hours per pay period.  Vacation is capped at 2 years’ worth of accruals. 
  • Sick Leave - 3.70 hours earned per pay period with no maximum accrual cap.
  • Retirement - Employees are members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The city does not participate in Social Security.
  • Health Insurance - Employee pays a portion for employee and dependent coverage of medical, dental, health, and life insurance.
  • Medicare - City pays 1.45% of salary; employee pays 1.45% of salary.
  • SDI - 1% of salary paid by the employee.
  • Deferred Compensation - CalPERS 457 Deferred Compensation program is available for employee participation.
  • Additional - Longevity is 2.5% for every 5 years of full-time service; City pays all state-mandated training and licenses; pet insurance is available.
