THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is a beautiful coastal community, just south of San Francisco with an exciting opportunity for Child Care Professionals. Currently, the City of Pacifica Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department is recruiting for Child Care Teacher II’s and III’s to join our Child Care Team! The level at which incumbents will be hired depends on qualifications.

CHILD CARE TEACHER II: $4,220.00 - $4,900.00 Monthly, full-time benefited (comprehensive benefits package)

Under the direct supervision of the Child Care Site Coordinator, the Child Care Teacher II is responsible to provide recreational and educational instruction and activities, social development, guidance and care for preschool and elementary age children by leading and assisting in the selection and coordination of a variety of activities and curriculum at a child care site.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Under the supervision of a Child Care Leader Teacher III:

  • Provide general supervision of children from ages 2.5 to 14 years.
  • Assist in the development of diversified program of recreational games, arts, crafts and other activities for elementary school children.
  • Assist in the development of a diversified preschool curriculum of music, science, math, dramatic play, social studies, literature and recreational activities.
  • Plan and lead a variety of activities appropriate to children of various age groups.
  • Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and events.
  • Instruct children in the safe and proper use of supplies and equipment.
  • Instruct children in proper health and hygiene care.

  • Assist in the development of a diversified program of recreational games, sports, arts, crafts and other activities for elementary school children.
  • Assist in the development of a diversified preschool curriculum of music, science, math, dramatic play, social studies, literature and recreational activities.
  • Plan and lead a variety of activities appropriate to children of various age groups.
  • Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and events.
  • Instruct children in the safe and proper use of supplies and equipment.
  • Instruct children in proper health and hygiene care.
  • Assist in the selection and arrangement of field trips, special events and guest speakers. Assist with the preparation of site nutrition program.
  • Assist with developing discipline techniques and maintaining acceptable classroom behavior from participants.
  • Participate in cleaning and maintain the facility and equipment.
  • Inspect the site and equipment for potential safety hazards; take corrective action to prevent injuries.
  • Assist in recording numbers for attendance and nutrition reports.
  • Assist Site Coordinator in preparing yearly State of California Desired Results reports, including managing children’s portfolios, and monitoring student progress.

Ideal Candidate

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES - CHILD CARE TEACHER II

Experience:

  • Two or more years’ experience working at an early childhood or school-aged program.
  • Experience working with both preschool and school-aged children.

Education Desired:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED .
  • Must have twelve (12) college/university semester or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation or other specific courses applicable to preschool and/or elementary school-age children.
  • Knowledge of various curriculum games, sports, arts, crafts and other activities appropriate to elementary school-age and preschool children.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid, health/hygiene and safety practices.

Certifications:

Red Cross Infant/Child CPR and Red Cross First Aid certifications must be completed within six months of employment.

Licenses:

Must possess a valid Class C California driver’s license at time of appointment and have a satisfactory driving record.

Additional Requirements: 

All State of California Child Development Permits must be renewed and maintained. All Childcare employees must pass City of Pacifica background check which includes but is not limited to the Department of Justice fingerprinting scan and a pre-employment physical.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES - CHILD CARE TEACHER III (LEAD)

Permit Requirements:

Child Care Teacher III’s must have a current Teacher permit from the State of California upon hire date.  Temporary County Office of Education permits are acceptable for up to one year, and therefore are acceptable upon hire date, but since they are not renewable they must be upgraded to a State permit by the end of the one-year probation period.

Experience: One hundred seventy five (175) days experience supervising children as defined as three (3) hours or more per day in the past four (4) years. This experience must be in a group setting working with children aged 2 ½ - 14.

Desired Experience:

  • Two years’ experience in a group setting with preschool or elementary school-age children.

Education:

  • 24 units in Child Development including all 12 units of the core child development classes, and 16 general education units. 

OR 

  • AA or higher in Early Childhood Education with a 3-unit supervised field experience class.

Desired Education:

  • Knowledge of developmental stages of school-age and preschool children.
  • Knowledge of various curriculum games, sports, arts, crafts and other activities appropriate to elementary school-age and preschool children.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid, health/hygiene and safety practices.

Certifications:

Red Cross Infant/Child CPR and Red Cross First Aid certifications must be completed within six months of employment.

Benefits

The City's comprehensive benefits package includes:

Holidays: Thirteen (13) days per year.

Vacation: From 11 to 27 days per year, depending on length of service.

Sick leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual.

Retirement: The City contracts with CalPERS to provide a retirement plan that utilizes the formula of 2.5% @ 55 for "Classic members" or 2% @ 62 for "PEPRA members." Classic Members contribute 8% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 10.5%.  PEPRA members pay 6.75% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 9.25%.    

Insurance:  The City provides its employees with a medical  insurance allowance that allows employees to purchase medical insurance through either Teamsters Union #856 Health and Welfare or CalPERS medical benefits plan. Some plans require employee contributions.   Employees with proof of qualifying health insurance coverage through another group health plan may qualify for a "Health In-Lieu Payment" when declining city coverage.

The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan and vision plan for employee and all eligible dependents.

The City pays premiums for:

·         Life insurance premium in the amount of $30,000.

·         Long term disability insurance (to begin sixty days after onset of non-work-related illness or injury).

Training: The City will pay up to $2,000 per fiscal year toward the cost of books and tuition required as part of courses taken that are job-related.

Deferred Compensation: Employees may participate in a choice of three deferred compensation plans.

Union Membership: This position is represented by the Teamsters Local 856, Miscellaneous Unit.
