What does it take to get hired as a Police Recruit?

1. Application - Apply during the open application period.  It is important you get your application in early as the allotted numbers of applications often fill quickly.  Applications and supplemental questions will be reviewed and screened weekly, and the most qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process so that we are able to schedule for the Academy.

2. Personal History Statement - Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be asked to submit a Personal History Statement (PHS). 

3. Written Test - Either a PELLET B score of 45 or greater (within last 12 months) or an Associate’s Degree or higher. Information on the POST (PELLETB) can be found at:  https://post.ca.gov/LE-Entry-Level-Test-Battery-Applicant-FAQs

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department offers monthly testing. You can register for their exam at https://www.sacsheriff.com/pages/careers_training_academy.php 

4.  A valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record - Attach DMV Printout obtained from an official California DMV Office - www.DMV.ca.gov).   The online Driver Record is not an official document, but the City will accept either this or an official copy. The City will also accept an out of state/country DMV record. However, you will need to obtain a California State Driver’s License within 30 days of appointment.  

5. Physical Agility - Qualifying candidates may be required to pass the POST Work Sample Test Battery as the physical agility test. See below for details:

  • OBSTACLE COURSE/AGILITY RUN: Run a 99-yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb-height obstacles, and a 34-inch high obstacle that must be vaulted.
  • BODY DRAG: Lift and drag 165 pound lifelike dummy 32 feet.
  • CHAIN LINK FENCE: Run 5 yards to a 6-foot chain link fence, climb over fence, and continue running another 25 yards.
  • SOLID FENCE CLIMB: Run 5 yards to a 6-foot solid fence, climb over fence, and continue running another 25 yards.
  • 500 YARD RUN: Run 500 yards.

*** The minimum score for the WSTB is 384-points. The faster you go on each event, the higher the score.

6. Oral Interview - The top-performing candidates will be invited to interview.

7.  Livescan – Candidates who pass the oral interview will then be fingerprinted (Livescan) at the Dixon Police Department.

8. Polygraph – Will be scheduled once Livescan results come back.

9. Background - A hiring eligibility list will be presented to the Police Department. The Department will determine which candidates will proceed to the background process. If selected, a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted consistent with the standards established by the California Commission on POST.

10. Conditional Offer of Employment - If your background meets the standards for a career in law enforcement, the Department may extend a Conditional Offer of Employment.
