Applications are being accepted for the position of Natural Resources Aide with the City of South San Francisco. This is a non-benefited, part-time/hourly position.

Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Parks, and Facilities divisions. The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space.

The Position 

Under direct supervision of the Natural Resources Specialist and general supervision of the Parks Supervisor and/or Parks Program Manager, the Natural Resources Aide performs a variety of tasks and maintenance activities, including the removal of invasive plants, installation of native plants, trail repair, erosion control, and other related duties as assigned.

This entry-level classification will perform maintenance and labor tasks in support of habitat management and restoration activities under the Sign Hill Habitat Restoration Project. Work may be performed independently or as a member of a crew. Depending upon assignment, work is performed under close to general supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and by the results achieved. Incumbents may provide limited work direction to temporary or volunteer workers.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal Natural Resources Aide will have knowledge of basic techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in parks and grounds maintenance; occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures related to the work; and basic principles of ecology and resource conservation. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to effectively and safely perform a variety of park maintenance tasks.
 

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

  • Performs maintenance and labor tasks as part of natural resource and conservation programs.
  • Operates city vehicles and related grounds and maintenance equipment, including basic hand and power tools.
  • Participates in seed collection and direct seed planting, as well as installation of nursery raised plugs.
  • Ensures all work performed is done in a safe manner in accordance with the City’s safety practices and procedures including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: A minimum of six months of relevant experience is highly desirable.  

Training:  Equivalent to graduation from high school. Relevant college coursework in environmental science, biology, or horticulture is desired.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record preferred.
