Description

The County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is now accepting applications for the position of Construction Carpenter/Mason.

There is currently one vacancy with the Department of Public Works Road Services Division.

About The Department

The Department of Public Works plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains facilities and equipment that are safe and accessible to the clients of County agencies, the general public, and County employees. The Department advises the Board of Supervisors on all public works issues, including rates and charges for services that are fair to both the users and service providers. Public Works has a budget of approximately $300 million and is comprised of over 300 employees in five divisions: Administrative Services, Airports, Engineering and Resource Protection, Facility and Capital Projects, and Road Services. Under general supervision, serve as a lead worker in a wide variety of skilled heavy carpentry work, concrete forming and placing, metal work, road maintenance and manual labor; repair wooden structures on bridges, sidewalk forming and placing; maintain highway chain link fences and sandblast line markers on roadways; and perform related duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:
 

  • Journey-level skills to perform routine repairs such as repairing guard rails, bridge railings, fences, box culverts, replacing traffic signs, etc.
  • General carpentry and concrete experience.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently without assistance.
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and work well together with crew members.
  • Be able to read and interpret construction documents.
  • Have completed an apprenticeship program or at least 5 years of heavy construction carpentry or concrete experience.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

  • Lay out, cut, fit and join lumber to construct and repair all types wood structures used in road maintenance projects including guardrails, bridges, fences and box culverts.
  • Read and interpret construction documents; make working sketches.
  • Make small scale excavations and establish grades for laying concrete; build forms, place and finish concrete for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, headwalls, retaining walls, storm drains, catch basins, and other concrete facilities.
  • Mix mortar and concrete to obtain various consistencies.
  • Construct and install manholes.
  • Install and maintain highway chain link fences, guardrails, and barricades.
  • Grind/remove road stripes; markers and lay out new striping.
  • Place pavement markers, stripes, and roadside markers.
  • Maintain carpenter shop and tools.
  • Estimate and purchase materials for all jobs.
  • Drive and operate light-duty vehicles.
  • Make emergency repair to County buildings.
  • During storms, help crews clean ditches, storm drains, remove fallen trees, etc.
  • Perform as lead worker.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Layout and install traffic signs, pavement markings, pavement markers, etc.
     

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
 

  • Heavy construction.
  • Concrete form construction.
  • General carpentry including methods, materials, machines and tools.
  • Concrete and mortar mixes.
  • Methods of establishing grades for laying concrete.
  • Costs of materials.
     

Skill/Ability to:
 

  • Read and interpret plans and written specifications; create working sketches.
  • Use and make minor repairs to hand and power tools.
  • Measure or estimate size, type and cost of various materials needed for a project.
  • Repair and maintain a wide variety of wooden, concrete and metal structures.
  • Estimate labor requirements for a project.
  • Drive and operate light-duty vehicles.
  • Provide lead direction to assigned staff.
  • Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Lift and carry equipment (50 lbs. min.) and supplies (50 lbs. min.) used in the course of the work, such as lumber, concrete, and fencing materials.
     

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
 

  • Experience: Journey level (3+ years) status as a Construction Carpenter or Mason and demonstrated proficiency in the field.
     

Licensure/Certification:
 

  • Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.
