The City of Sausalito is seeking a dynamic and innovative team player for the position of Librarian II at the Sausalito Public Library. Under general direction from the City Librarian, the Librarian II will support all programs and/or functional areas in the City Library, including identifying current and projecting future community needs and providing leadership to initiatives to improve library services.

The responsibilities assigned to the Librarian II will be primarily oriented towards services to children and young adults, including providing direct support to children attending the schools of the Sausalito Marin City School District and their teachers.

The incumbent will also perform a variety of professional librarian duties, such as reference services, collection development and management, and cataloging. The Librarian II manages the effective use of library resources to improve organizational productivity and customer service while providing highly complex and responsible support to the City Librarian in their areas of expertise, as well as performing related work as required.

The ideal candidate for the Librarian II position is a dynamic and forward-thinking professional who brings a proven track record in library services, showcasing a passion for creating positive patron experiences. This candidate has a customer-centric approach coupled with a genuine enthusiasm for community engagement and a commitment to continuous learning.

In addition, the ideal candidate will:

  • Possess a master’s degree in library science, information science or a related field.
  • Have considerable knowledge of principles, practices, and trends of professional library work.
  • Have previous experience serving as a specialist for children’s or teen service, coordinating with and supporting staff in the delivery of services, identifying and analyzing situations or problems and offering thoughtful solutions, and applying soft skills to communicate with various library stakeholders effectively and tactfully.
  • Have previous experience facilitating community engagement and outreach efforts for children or teens, including designing and delivering innovative programs and services that are responsive to the needs of community members and partner organizations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and implement all aspects of children’s and young adult services, including community outreach and programming of all kinds, and evaluate the effectiveness of programs based on community response.
  • Know principles, practices, characteristics, and activities of library services and technology, including, but not limited to, integrated library database systems, technology planning, technology vendor relations, requests for proposals, database licensing, and other applications of technology.
  • Have the ability to prepare and administer departmental budgets.
  • Demonstrate exceptional organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Be bright, energetic, and exude a positive attitude. 

ABOUT THE LIBRARY: The 6,250 square-foot Sausalito Library is located inside Sausalito City Hall at 420 Litho Street. The library is open 7 days per week for a total of 51 hours. Annual circulation is approximately 110,000 items, and annual walk-in attendance is over 60,000. The Sausalito Library is a member of the MARINet consortium of public and academic libraries in Marin County. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manages, plans, and oversees the operation of multiple library programs and functional areas.
  • Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the assigned functions and programs; recommends and administers policies and procedures.
  • Develops and standardizes procedures and methods to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of services, projects, and activities; assesses and monitors workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement and makes recommendations to the City Librarian.
  • Participates in the development and administration of assigned budgets; participates in the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Participates in selection, training, and evaluation of assigned personnel; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees on performance issues; works with the Human Resources Department on disciplinary and termination procedures.
  • Directs, oversees, and develops the services related to the assigned function; assigns work activities, projects, and programs; monitors work flow; reviews and evaluates services, methods, and procedures; prepares various staff reports on operations and activities.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues, library support groups, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Identifies and anticipates changing community needs or library best practices and develops plans, services, and programs to address these changes.
  • Performs outreach to the community, community organizations, and schools; informs community members and organizations about library services, programs, and collections.
  • Conducts a variety of organizational studies, investigations, and operational studies; recommends modifications to programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in library services; researches emerging products and enhancements and their applicability to City and department needs.
  • Assists the City Librarian in monitoring changes in regulations and technology that may affect operations; implements policy and procedural changes after approval.
  • Receives, assesses, and responds to problems and complaints in a professional manner; identifies and reports findings and takes necessary corrective action.
  • Develops and maintains library website content.
  • Assists the City Librarian with special projects.
  • Acts for the City Librarian as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: The equivalent to a master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in library science.

Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible, relevant work experience, preferably in a public library, including at least two (2) years of supervisory and/or managerial experience.

Licenses and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license by time of appointment.

 

 

Benefits

The City offers a healthy cafeteria benefits program including choices among plan options for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long-term disability, and PERS long-term care insurance. 

Retirement: The City is a part of the CalPERS retirement plan and does not contribute to Social Security. Classic employees – 2% @55 formula, highest 3-year average compensation PEPRA employees – hired after 1/1/13 or Classic employees who have experienced a 6- month break in service are eligible for a 2% @ 62 formula, highest 3-year average compensation

Sick Leave: 96 hours of sick leave per year. 

Vacation: Employees can earn 120 hours a year

Holidays: 11 authorized holidays per year, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.

Education and Wellness Reimbursement: Employees may request reimbursement for $2,000 of approved education expenditures, $450 of that amount may be spent on selected wellness benefits and items.

Union Membership: This position is non-exempt and is part of the Service Employees’ International Union.
