Description

The Public Works Maintenance Superintendent (Streets) is a management-level role within the Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. This position is responsible for overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment, street and sidewalk repairs, street drainage system maintenance, and graffiti abatement.

Key duties for this role include:

  • Overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment.

  • Managing street and sidewalk repairs.

  • Maintaining street drainage systems.

  • Leading graffiti abatement efforts.

This position also involves:

  • Coordinating the functions needed to maintain streets and related infrastructure in a safe and reliable manner, ensuring accessibility for all users.

  • Coordinating the equipment needs of the Streets Section.

  • Managing activities including staff supervision, assisting with budget preparation and monitoring, and addressing the training and safety needs of the staff.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:​​​​​​​

  • Strong background in road maintenance operations, including maintenance of all public infrastructure (streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, pavement markings, signs, storm drains, and street sweeper operations.)
  • Strong understanding of construction tools, materials, safety standards, and equipment operation.
  • Essential supervisory experience.

  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to interpret and implement city policies, manage budgets, and coordinate work across departments.

  • Knowledge of safety and personnel training needs of road maintenance operations.
  • Innovative approaches to meeting equipment needs of a road maintenance operation.
  • Strong computer skills in creating spreadsheets, memos, and composing emails.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience managing multiple personnel, projects, and assignments.
  • Ability to diplomatically deescalate problematic situations in a professional manner.
  • Experience in recruiting and hiring personnel.
  • Knowledge of typical Maintenance order processing systems.
  • Strong analytical skills, the ability to solve problems, and adapt with changing conditions.
  • Experience in developing employees and writing employee evaluations.
  • Ability to provide leadership inspiring employees to produce quality work/maintain positive morale

  • City contribution of $200 per month to a healthcare reimbursement program for retiree medical

Health Insurance:

  • Medical Premiums are covered at 100% for most plans, even family coverage.
  • Coverage available as early as 1st of the month following start date.
  • A variety of PPO and HMO plans are available through the CalPERS Health Program.
  • The City contributes $158.00 per month and up to $2,269.44 per month in “Simiflex Dollars,” towards the cost of medical. 
  • “Simiflex Dollars” can be used to offset the cost of medical, dental, and/or vision insurance, or other optional benefits. 

Paid Leave:

  • Work/Life balance with 5.6 weeks of AL (Annual Leave) per year to start (AL combines vacation and sick time). 
  • Accruals increase at 5 years and 10 years of service.
  • Cash out option available after one year of service.
  • 11 paid holidays per year and one floating holiday per year.

Prescription Drug Plan: 

  • Major retail options and mail order program.

Paid Dental Insurance:

  • HMO and PPO Plan available
  • City contribution of up to $100 per month
  • Dental insurance from Delta Dental costs the employee $0 to $31.10 per month for family coverage depending on the plan chosen.

Vision Insurance:

  • City contribution of $19.80 per month
  • Vision insurance from VSP costs the employee $2.66 per month for family coverage.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA): 

  • An FSA account allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for out-of-pocket health and dependent care expenses.
  • Eliminate paying federal or state taxes with an FSA account. 

Employee Assistance Program (EAP): 

  • Confidential counseling and referral service to help employees and their household members resolve personal problems. 
  • Up to 8 free consultations for employees and all members of their household.

Optional Insurance from AFLAC: 

  • Available plans include accident, cancer, hospital and critical care.

Employee & Dependent Life Insurance Plans:

  • $101,000 employee coverage provided at the City's expense.
  • $5,000 dependent coverage provided at the City's expense.

Short-Term & Long-Term Disability Plans

  • Provided at the City's expense

Tuition Reimbursement:

  • Up to $1,600 per year.

Alternative Work Schedules: 

  • Many positions offer a 9/80 schedule with alternative Monday or Friday off.
