Description

Applications are being accepted for the position of Engineering Intern (part-time hourly/temporary) with the City of South San Francisco’s Public Works Department - Engineering Division.

Hourly Rate:  $23.00 per hour; interns will be expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week 

This is a non-benefited, part-time hourly/temporary position. 

The City of South San Francisco is a fully independent and highly commercialized full-service city with an estimated population of 66,185 growing to 100,000 during business hours. City departments include: Police, Fire, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Economic and Community Development, Information Technology, City Attorney, Library, Finance, Human Resources and Office of the City Manager.  The City has a Council-City Manager form of government with more than 400 full– and part-time employees.

THE POSITION
Under supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office work to assist the Public Works Engineering Division teams on programs and projects that may include engineering permits, land development plan checks, procedural and standards research and development, record and asset management, traffic research and field crew assistance.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs a wide variety of responsible sub-professional engineering work including assisting engineering staff with general clerical, administrative, and technical tasks for public works projects, electronic document filing, entering data and creating reports in various software applications,   internet research, processing permits, reviewing land development plans, researching engineering record archives, assisting with Traffic Advisory Committee tasks, and assisting with internal and external communications and public outreach.      


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:  Basic engineering principles; drafting symbols used in construction work; basic engineering office equipment; modern personal computers and related computer software; principles and practical application of computer-aided drafting such as AutoCad, design and mapping systems.
Ability to:  Communicate well, both orally and in writing, detailed-oriented, highly organized, adaptable, and energetic, and work both cooperatively and complete assignments independently; learn basic construction inspection procedures; accurately make and verify mathematical computations; perform neat and accurate drafting; collect engineering field data, and make field notes; maintain accurate records; effectively use modern office software; prepare PowerPoint presentations; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; prepare response letters to the public; work flexible hours; perform customer service with the public and general contractors; and perform duties as assigned.


Experience:  None required.

Education:  Current student enrolled in a university/college pursuing an undergraduate degree (Junior or Senior) or graduate degree in Engineering, preferably in Civil. 

License: Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License is preferable.
