The Engineering Divisions of the Public Works Department have immediate openings for two engineers. We are seeking individuals with the competence and experience to address challenges with confidence and professionalism. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated skills in the areas of utilities, land development, engineering design and/or construction, as well as experience in review and oversight across all civil engineering disciplines.

These positions may be filled as Engineering Assistant ($43.72 - $65.58 per hour), Engineering Associate ($48.30 - $72.46 per hour), or Associate Engineer ($53.37 - $80.06 per hour), depending on candidate experience, qualifications and certifications.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and oversees the preparation of complex and technical engineering studies, plans, and reports
  • Assists the Division Manager and Team Leader / Senior Engineer in managing varying responsibilities including customer service, land development review, water and wastewater design and permitting, design and construction of pavement and roadway improvements, and engineering field assistance to City Maintenance personnel
  • Assists with the preparation of construction documents, drawings, estimates, and specifications
  • Coordinates and performs professional planning and engineering work, including reviewing proposed land development plans, and environmental impact reports (EIR), and recommends or develops appropriate mitigation measures
  • Participates in the review, development, and/or revision of the various elements of plans, ordinances, and other policies and procedures
  • Provide oversight of engineering consultants and/or co-workers
  • Meets and works with professional and public groups
  • Respond to residents regarding public works concerns
  • Coordinates with customer service staff for all public works grading, paving and encroachment permits
  • Assists in preparing basic engineering plans for roadway improvements including pavement, drainage and striping plans
  • Prepares engineering maps and drawings; participates in the filing and retrieval of engineering maps, documents, and records
  • Performs work and analysis in developing long-range goals and policies in support of the City's General Plan
  • Conducts work to seek to pursue grant funding opportunities for programmed improvements; and assists in the planning and administration of various projects fueled by local, regional, and federal grant funds
  • Makes presentations to boards, committees/commissions, City Council, and the public; represents the City in matters at various local and regional meetings
  • Meets and works with professional and public groups, and coordinates public outreach for City infrastructure projects and programs

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate should possess:                                                                                      

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a related field
  • Work Experience -
    • Engineering Assistant – Previous work experience desirable
    • Engineering Associate - Two or more years of professional-level engineering experience in design and or construction work
    • Associate Engineer – Four or more years of professional-level engineering experience in design and or construction work
  • A valid (or is a candidate to receive) certificate as an Engineer-in-Training issued by the State of California; an additional two years of professional-level engineering experience may be substituted for the EIT certificate; a Professional Engineering certificate is preferred
  • A valid class C California driver’s license
  • Outstanding teamwork and interpersonal skills, including excellent customer relations skills
  • Strong organizational, research, and analytical skills
  • Ability to identify alternative solutions, consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of established goals
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple deadlines, priorities, and concurrent projects with frequent interruptions
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or GIS systems and Bluebeam
