OVERVIEW:

Valley Water’s mission is to provide Silicon Valley with safe, clean water for a healthy life, environment, and economy. We manage an integrated water resources system that includes the supply of clean, safe water, flood protection, and stewardship of streams on behalf of Santa Clara County's 2 million residents.

We will provide on the job coaching to help you pass the state water exam!
 
The Skilled Trades Internship Program has three (3) internship opportunities among three (3) of our plants: Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center*, Rinconada Water Treatment Plant, and Penitencia Water Treatment Plant.
 
NOTE: Advanced Water Purification Center is categorized as a Wastewater facility, and interning at this facility only qualifies for Wastewater treatment operator licenses. Both Rinconada and Penitencia water treatment plants are conventional T-5 drinking water facilities.
 
INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS:
This internship position will require the selected candidate to report on-site 100% of the time, adhering to strict safety protocols. Location will vary depending on the intern’s selected treatment plant (Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center*, Rinconada Water Treatment Plant, and Penitencia Water Treatment Plant).

Required License or Certificate

WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO:

  • Currently enrolled in or completed an Engineering, Science, or Water Related Program in the last six (6) months.
  • Pursuing state certification to be an operator at a Drinking Water Treatment Facility or an Advanced Water Treatment Facility.
  • Community service and safety orientation.
  • Curious and mechanically inclined.
  • Able to do shift work.
AS AN INTERN, A TYPICAL DAY INCLUDES:
  • 5 am start, shift pass down.
  • Learning safe work practices.
  • Training with a certified water plant operator to perform plant rounds and associated duties.
  • Performing basic water sampling and analysis.
  • Perform cleaning e.g., hosing down basins, sweeping, organizing, general housekeeping.
  • Learning to monitor water plant through SCADA computer system.

 

Selection Process

ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible for this opportunity, you must:

  • Be currently enrolled in or have completed in the last six months: Engineering, Science, or Water Related Program.
  • Be able to commit at least 15-20 hours a week.
  • Live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location by their start date.
  • Proof of enrollment or graduation required prior to start date.
  • Pass pre-employment screening process including reference, background, and criminal checks.
